Lex Luthor Drop of Doom Opens as the World's Tallest Freefall

Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, California, has opened Lex Luthor Drop of Doom and at the same time now officially holds the record for the world's tallest freefall.

The drop ride is attached to the side of the existing Superman tower, creating a nice dichotomy of good versus evil with Superman and Lex Luthor.  The new ride, an Intamin creation, features two sides, each of which lift passengers up to the 400 foot level at which point gravity takes them down at up to 85 miles per hour.

The previous record holder for a drop tower was the Giant Drop at Australia's Dreamworld, which features a 377 foot plunge and is also attached to the side of a ride similar to Superman.

With the opening of Lex Luthor Drop of Doom, Six Flags Magic Mountain now holds the title of world's tallest freefall and also the park with the most roller coasters in the world.

The above images are from a b-roll that the park released, which has shown up on YouTube.  There are some amazing helicopter shots of the ride in operation along side the Superman cars, which is like some kind of amusement park ride vehicle ballet of sorts.  Check out the video here.
