Disneyland's Splash Mountain closed for good yesterday evening after sporting waits that hit around 4 hours long, at least according to the park's app. The ride went out without any sort of big fanfare from the theme park, as the focus is on the future of the attraction, not the past. That future is Tiana's Bayou Adventure, a total retheme of the ride which is slated to open in both Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom in late 2024. The ride closed in Florida earlier this year, and Imagineering is already hard at work on the changes.
Splash Mountain was a beloved attraction that maybe, probably, never should have had the theme it did, and it didn't age well. But that's not the point of this post, the point is more to look at some new news that Disney has put out about Tiana's Bayou Adventure... and to saw farewell to Splash Mountain. Many of us have happy memories of the ride for various reasons, whether on a family vacation to Orlando or with friends in California.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure will see visitors enter the word of The Princess And The Frog, and be led through the ride by Tiana and her friendly alligator pal Louis. The pair will be planning a special Mardi Gras celebration and we're invited, of course! Since the plot of the feature movie, Tiana has started her own food company, aptly named Tiana's Foods, and purchased a salt mine and brought it and the surrounding area back to life. There's a boutique farm and a professional kitchen area, I'm assuming all of which will be seen in the ride. Overflowing with success, Tiana is now ready to throw that big celebration for us all as we visit her bustling salt mine food company combination.
This recent video from Disney gives am idea of how the exterior of the attraction will look, which includes a tiara-topped water tower up on the hill. According to Disney that water tower will be lifted into place on the Florida ride sometime this summer. The ride is taking on a more New Orleans feel, obviously, but generally we're not going to see anything super dramatic that will change how the ride looks from the midway.
Lastly, and most recently, Disney has revealed that the ride will also feature Mama Odie during the ride, and the character will be voiced by Jenifer Lewis as she was in the movie. The above concept art was released depicting guests seeing some magic performed by Mama Odie after meeting her for the first time. Disney is also stressing that Tiana's Bayou Adventure will feature brand new characters that park fans can fall in love with, "dozens" of new audio-animatronics, new music along with familiar songs from the movie, the scent of baking beignets in the ride's queue and much of the cast of the original movie reprising their character roles for the ride.
Splash Mountain at the Magic Kingdom in Florida finally has a closing date: January 23rd, 2023. The ride was previously announced to close and transform into a Princess and the Frog themed ride, and that announcement feels like it was decades ago at this point. Of course, there was a pandemic and other obstacles along the way, but it feels like Disney's timeline of announcing park changes and implementing them has become as wide as the ocean.
Regardless, when the attraction reopens in 2024 it will be called Tiana's Bayou Adventure, and be set a year after the conclusion of The Princess and the Frog feature film.
The announcement came after Disney released some information about a new scene in the ride, depicted above. It certainly looks pretty! Tiana and her alligator pal Louis are planning to hold a special celebration for the people of New Orleans, and they're welcoming guests to the action in the scene above. It will be one of the first that guests encounter once they get inside the mountain. The critters who are playing a selection of natural instruments are also going to be featured throughout the ride, with more details on that to come - says Disney.
Tiana's Bayou Adventure is also slated to open at Disneyland sometime in 2024 as well, however a closing date for Splash Mountain at that park has not yet been announced.
The industry is still trying to find its footing in this summer of uncertainty, and it appears as though a big part of that is scaling back operations to better fit with what has turned out to be a small demand for the amusement industry right now.
We've seen a number of parks stop requiring reservations to visit the parks. Dollywood stopped requiring day ticket visitors to have a reservation, though season pass holders still need them for the theme park. A while back Worlds of Fun axed the reservation requirement, then Kings Island, Kennywood and Cedar Point followed soon after. Dorney Park removed the reservation requirement for season pass holders, only asking single day ticket visitors to have one. One can only assume that crowd levels are small enough that there is no need to monitor attendance with reservations.
Scaling back park hours is also becoming common. Kings Island released their updated hours for August which will have the park closed Wednesday and Thursday, then to weekends only by the end of the month. Closing times on Saturdays did get extended until 10 pm however. Cedar Point will stay open daily until mid-August, then switch to Friday-Sunday operations only and right now are closed all of September aside from Labor day weekend. Kennywood has also decided to stay closed Mondays and Tuesday in August, then go weekends only in September - and has also made it clear there will be no Phantom Fright Nights this year. Idlewild is going even further, opening only on Friday - Sunday starting August 1st.
This is not a full list of changes, there are more out there as well.
We're also starting to see some Southern California properties throw in the towel on the year - that is just what Raging Waters Los Angeles did today. They do note that they are excited to reopen in 2021. The rest of the California theme park crew, and there's a lot of them, are still waiting on the ability to open. As we discussed some parks are finding other ways to operate, such as Knott's super popular food festival Taste of Calico which actually got extended two more weeks and is selling out fast.
It is almost to the point where parks are having to make tough decisions regarding their popular Halloween seasons. Just recently we saw both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood officially cancel their events for this year, with Halloween Horror Nights not taking place at either park. Disney World has also called off Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and the Disneyland Resort cancelled the Oogie Boogie Bash even though no opening date is in sight for its parks.
No news yet from other park operators on Halloween, but with these big parks setting the standard it might not look to good.
Things may be a bit more quiet around this blog for the foreseeable future, as park seasons are shortened and events are cancelled - there simply isn't much to cover. We will look forward to 2021 though!
Some rumors in recent weeks had hinted at Disney considering a retheme of Splash Mountain at its U.S. parks for months now, and it turns out that is exactly their plan. In light of recent events the march of social change has reached many corporate levels, refreshing indeed, and in this case it made its way to a log ride in two Disney Parks in Florida and California.
Splash Mountain was themed around "The Song Of The South," a Disney film from the 1940s that contains plenty of racial stereotypes set in the plantation era South. Disney put away the movie for good a few decades ago, but the ride's characters and music are still based off the film.
In the announcement on the Disney Parks Blog they explain that the rethemed rides will "pick up this story after the final kiss, and join Princess
Tiana and Louis on a musical adventure – featuring some of the powerful
music from the film – as they prepare for their first-ever Mardi Gras
performance."
"Tiana is a modern, courageous, and empowered woman, who pursues her
dreams and never loses sight of what’s really important. It’s a great
story with a strong lead character, set against the backdrop of New
Orleans and the Louisiana bayou."
The retheme of the ride is still a work in progress, and both Splash Mountains are scheduled to reopen in their current form when the parks welcome guests back. The work is being led by Imagineer Charita Carter and Tony Baxter, who led the original Splash Mountain project, will join as a creative advisor.

Some major announcements came today with regard to parks reopening, the largest of which is Walt Disney World in Orlando starting to reopen on July 11th (pending final approval from Florida's Governor). On that day both the Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom will open, and a few days later on July 15th both Disney's Hollywood Studios and Epcot will welcome back guests.
The property has paused new ticket sales and hotel reservations in order to focus on guests with existing tickets and hotel plans - this includes annual passholders. Guests will need to utilize a reservation system in order to visit the parks to control crowding - the park's attendance will be limited as expected.
The parks will hold off on holding shows, parades and fireworks for now, since these events create crowd gathering situations. Face masks for anyone aged 3 and up will be required across the entire resort, except for when people are eating or swimming, and touchless temperature checks will be used.
Walt Disney World is a gigantic property, and arguably the largest park (set of parks) reopening that this country will see. To that end everyone has a lot of questions about the property's 'new normal' so be sure to check out this site for some additional details.
SeaWorld Orlando has also detailed their plans to reopen their park, which they hope to do on June 11th. The park would like to hold an employee appreciation/test day on June 10th as well.
The park appears be waiting for final approval from the Governor until they update their website with official plans, however several sites are covering information from their presentation today. The park will require guests aged two and a half and older to wear a mask, and will also utilize temperature screenings. Interestingly, they do still plan to have parades though all guest interaction will be removed from them.
The reopening plans include Aquatica Orlando and Discovery Cove - all properties will have strict social distancing markers in place to keep guests spaced out. That is an especially big concern for animal exhibits, where visitors commonly gather.
Expect to see more from the park with regard to their full plan as soon as they receive final approval.
No specific dates have been set yet for these two water parks to reopen, but the parks did post this today:
"We are pleased that Governor Abbott’s reopening plans now include
waterparks. The safety of our guests and associates has always been, and
will always be, our top priority. Schlitterbahn is preparing to reopen
our properties mid-June with enhanced safety measures and operational
changes throughout both of our parks. We miss you and cannot wait to
welcome you back to the Hottest, Coolest Time in Texas."
Unless another Cedar Fair park makes an announcement soon, it seems that these parks opening in "mid-June" could be the first for the company.
Yesterday's Parks presentation at the D23 Expo in California turned out to feature a massive set of announcements about rides, attractions, hotels, experiences and more that are headed to the Disney parks in North America and beyond. Let's dig in!
First up is the announcement of the full name of the Star Wars themed area being built at both Disneyland and Disney's Hollywood Studios. Named Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, the land will open first at Disneyland in 2019 and then later that same year at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The lands will both feature two signature attractions that "put guests in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance." While not all details have been released there are more from the Expo shared here.
Another part of the growing excitement for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge was the gigantic model of the land that was on display at the Expo. Thankfully for those of us far away and not at the Expo, Disney filmed this fantastic video of the area as if we were walking through it. Certainly looks to take immersive to the next level.
Walt Disney World in Florida had a total of 4 new rides announced at the Expo. Two of them are headed to Epcot.
Located in a currently undeveloped backstage area behind the France pavilion will be Ratatouille, a ride inspired by the existing one at Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris. The 4-D ride mixes huge physical sets with 3-D animated sequences that have riders shrunk down to the size of a mouse. The journey takes passengers on a hair-raising trip through Gusteau's restaurant. To check out a video of the existing ride in Paris, click here.
Epcot's Future World will see Ellen and her Universe of Energy attraction close for good this August 13th, to be replaced by a brand new Guardians of the Galaxy themed ride. Very little about the attraction (ride system, etc) was revealed, but the Guardians are definitely moving into Epcot. The concept art released does not appear to give us any hints, either.
Both Ratatouille and the Guardians of the Galaxy ride should be ready to open in 2021 for Walt Disney World's 50th anniversary celebration.
The Magic Kingdom will also have a new attraction in 2021 when TRON Lightcycle Power Run opens adjacent to Space Mountain. The ride will go up in previously undeveloped land, and no attractions will close for it to be added. The ride is expected to be a clone of the ride of the same name at Shanghai Disneyland, which has received rave reviews since it opened last year.
As its core the ride is a launched coaster from Vekoma who's lighting alone is a serious visual feast. If you want to take a spin on the Shanghai version, click here.
Disney's Hollywood Studios will be retiring the Great Movie Ride (operates until August 13th) in order to build Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway, a unique dark ride that will be the first ride-through attraction to feature Mickey in Disney history.
Riders will join Mickey and Minnie as they enter one of the pair's famous cartoon shorts, becoming a part of the zany action. The dark ride will not require 3-D glasses, and from a quick preview shared at the Expo looks to feature plenty of projection mapping special effects to create ever-changing environments.
The Imagineers working on the ride are promising that it will be a fitting replacement for the Great Movie Ride, and is one of the "boldest... most impossible" things they've ever made.
No official word on the ride's opening date, but it wasn't listed as for the 50th anniversary so perhaps it'll be sooner.
The presentation also touched on various other additions, almost too much to list in one post. There's a summary of all announcements here, which is a great place to start reading.
These other announcements include:
• The grand opening of Toy Story Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios will take place in Summer 2018.
• A brand new gondola system, named the Disney Skyliner, will connect several Florida resorts to Epcot and Disney's Hollywood Studios.
• The Magic Kingdom will add a large new theater off Main Street U.S.A., based off of Kansas City's Willis Wood Theater. No show was announced for the new facility.
• A new restaurant will open soon adjacent to Mission: Space at Epcot. It will be set in outer space as a highly themed experience.
• Pixar Pier will replace Paradise Pier at Disney California Adventure, adding new theming to the existing land, and both the Avengers and Spiderman will eventually call the park home.
The Magic Kingdom is currently having an extended media day for several things, and luckily for us one of them includes previews of the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
The final piece of the New Fantasyland expansion at the Magic Kingdom, the family roller coaster ride has been under construction for what seems like eons. Granted it hasn't been nearly that long, but getting park guests (at least media for now) on the attraction is a big step!
The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train features Vekoma hardware and new trains designed to swing as they head around the course. There's a decent sized dark ride section in the middle of the ride, so do not go looking for 'traditional' roller coaster pacing on this one. The dark ride section features the fancy new animatronics that Disney has been showing off, and overall the experience seems like a big win for the family segment.

Via the Disney Parks Blog, we've got our first full look at the point of view video of the Magic Kingdom's Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster.
Embedded above, the video compares the actual ride footage (shot at night, thus obscuring some details) to an early CGI animation that the Imagineers did. The video shows off a bit of the swinging that the actual mine cars will do during the experience as well, though I would wager that those motions are better experienced as a rider.
This is also the first time I believe that we've gotten a solid look at the dark ride portion of the attraction, where the trains actually travel through the Dwarfs mine. Granted the animations and props weren't fully in place when the footage was taken, but it's still a nice preview.
No word yet on when the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will officially open, but it appears not to be too far off. The park has taken down some construction walls, offering new views of the mountain. WDWMagic has two recent galleries of photos, one featuring the waterfall and main drop for the coaster, and another of additional landscaping of the mountain underway.
A new video, published on the Disney Parks Blog, has given fans a fresh new look at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train - the last major attraction yet to open as part of the New Fantasyland in Florida's Magic Kingdom theme park.
The video focuses on the detailed work that has gone into painting and theming the unique trains for the family roller coaster. Above is one of several theming options designed for the cars. Between these different options and unique paint schemes, the cars of the Mine Train will all be different from one another.
Here's a look at the finished product, minus the restraints of course. The trains are also unique in that they will swing independently as they head around the track. The video actually shows some brief on-ride footage of them in action, though it was dark out when filmed so there aren't a lot of details. There's also a short look at some of the indoor sections of the ride, though they cut off the clip before the good stuff!
A new holiday-overlay has the Jungle Cruise at the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland all decked out for the most festive celebration of the year, Christmas. Known as the Jingle Cruise during the limited run, the attraction still features the scenes we've all come to love over the years, but with an added holiday flair.
At first I expected to see hippos with Santa hats and elephants with wreaths around their trunks, but the overlay is much more subtle than that. It seems that the queue area, which has been filled with holiday trees, stockings, lights, and even letters to Santa, got the brunt of the new theming. The actual ride experience relies mostly on special holiday-themed jokes from the Skipper, while the ride itself has minimal changes to the scenes.

The Jingle Cruise is now open at the Magic Kingdom and opens November 12th at Disneyland.
I really like how 'bulky' the Shanghai Disneyland castle appears to have been designed. It seems more realistic to me, and I supposed that's needed in order to contain more inside of it than at the other parks. On Twitter this photo appeared, and while I'm not sure it's totally new it was definitely new to me. The park is still in a ground work stage so there hasn't been much news about it in many months... at least not as far as rides and attractions are concerned.
There's another photo shared as well, this one is a head-on perspective.
Just today Disney shared on their official blog that the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, the last big part of the Magic Kingdom's New Fantasyland, had completed its first test run. Successfully!
The photo that they released, along with one additional one, gives us a great view of the themed trains for the coaster. The cars are able to swing side to side while it heads around the track, adding an extra element to the experience. The coaster is aimed at families, so I wouldn't expect it too be all that thrilling - but it should be a neat experience. The level of theming is top notch from what we've seen thus far, and will include an indoor dark ride section featuring all the Dwarfs.
Starting in the Spring of 2014 a new parade will premier at the Magic Kingdom in Florida, named the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade.
According to the park, "the Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade will bring a celebration of New Fantasyland
to Main Street, U.S.A., through fantastic and innovative new parade
floats, vibrant costumes, and an original soundtrack that will feature
beloved songs from favorite Disney films, plus a parade theme song."
As with previous parades at the Magic Kingdom, this new one will feature many characters and themes from classic Disney movies both new and old. These will include Dumbo, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Pinocchio, Brave, Tangled, and Peter Pan.
The Peter Pan float can be seen at top in concept art form, and it looks like it will be a tall one! Same goes for the Mickey and Minnie float on the left, which could serve as a nice first or last float.
I did not at first expect the level of detail that is going into the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, but am pleasantly surprised each time we see a new update of the coaster. The Magic Kingdom, I assumed, was just getting a kiddie coaster with some light theming - mostly landscaping - instead of more Princess space but boy I was wrong on that one.
The Mine Train is much more than a kiddie one, and the the cross between dark ride and coaster has me more excited than ever for the addition. The above video was released by Disney as part of a press event currently going on for Summer activities, and it really shows off the ride unlike before. It also gives us our first glimpse of some of the indoor segments that are being created.
SeaWorld Orlando is gearing up for the grand opening of Antarctica - less than 30 days now!
The park's latest video update gives viewers a look inside the attraction, including the gigantic frozen set pieces that are being created and the custom music recorded for the ride. This is another addition that is shaping up to be a hit, not only the actual ride but also the newly created themed area surrounding it. Each video reveals just a bit more and with the ride's opening now just around the corner, we might see more before the premier though I bet plenty will be kept a surprise for guests.

The official grand opening was held today, complete with celebrities and several press presentations. With most of the land now open to the public - sans the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster - visitors are flocking to try out all the new rides and attractions.
Speaking of the Mine Train ride, while it doesn't open until 2014 Disney has released a little more footage at a press event of the animation for the combo coaster and dark ride and it looks good! The above video, from Inside the Magic, includes a new look at one of the dark ride sections where the Dwarfs are hard at work. It's no Big Thunder Mountain, but I think it will fit in well in New Fantasyland once it is ready.
Finally, part of the opening festivities last night included a pretty neat dragon flying over the park, fire breathing and all. Disney has been promoting the dragon for some time now, even creating a Tumblr site for it, and last night it impressed visitors as it passed over the Magic Kingdom.
Neat, right? Disney fans have speculated about the use of this small aircraft to create possible characters in the future for Avatar at Animal Kingdom, so the Magic Kingdom's dragon might have been just a preview. Granted it needed the cover of darkness to hide the plane aspect, but it's still fun. A real fire breathing dragon!
Just outside of Gaston's Tavern, the stud muffin himself is available for a "meet and greet" at select times.
A legend in his own mind, Gaston has marked the entrance to the Tavern with this bronze statuary tribute to himself.
The inside Gaston’s Tavern has a very manly decor, themed to Gaston's many outdoor exploits. The house speciality, in honor of Gaston's loyal sidekick, will be Lafou's Brew, a no-sugar added frozen apple juice with a hint of toasted marshmallow, plus the Tavern will sell cinnamon rolls and a few other menu items
High on the hill, the Beast's castle, overlooks Fantasyland and inside the castle is one of the most extravagant and highly immersive attractions of New Fantasyland and it's not a ride or a show, it's a restaurant. The Be Our Guest restaurant transports visitors inside a the classic 1991 Disney animated film, “Beauty and the Beast."
A separate entrance has been set up for guests who just want to take a peek inside this new sit-down restaurant. The waiting time for a reservation was 90 minutes during our visit, so get their early. You won't be getting a quick bite to eat here without a little bit of planning.
The great hallway looks appropriately medieval, yet oddly comforting at the same time. Be Our Guest offers three different dining experiences. Adding to the immerseness of the experience, very cast member speaks in movie dialect, which makes the little ones giggle.
Here's a look at The Ballroom, with it's elegantly styled domed ceiling, twinkling chandeliers and views of softly falling snow. You can see two of the ornately designed chairs just behind the column. The Rose Gallery, which is only available at lunch time. features twirling, larger-than-life figures of Belle and Beast and the mysterious West Wing, featuring an enchanted rose round out the uniquely themed dining rooms.
Your last look, after some sweets and treats, will leave a lasting memory of this tale as old as time! A wonderful place to grab a snack while waiting for your Fastpass time, Be Our Guest is located right in the middle of New Fantasyland.
Once the Snow White and Seven Dwarfs coaster opens in 2014, the transformation will be complete, and Fantasyland will be the largest land of all!
The sign leads the way to the New Fantasyland's most interactive experience, the Enchanted Tales with Belle. Something as yet unexperienced at any other theme park, here the guests are a major part of the show.
Located in Maurice's Cottage, the Enchanted Tales with Belle retell the tale of when Belle met the Beast in the castle's library. This innovative experience combines a small group setting of guests who act out the parts of the "play," and then they participate in a quick meet and greet with Belle following the conclusion of the show.
A Disney cast member with help from The Wardrobe selects the cast from the group of guests for each telling of the "Tale as old as time." Guests are treated to flowery descriptions of their individual parts as Cast members pass out the "costumes," and there are lots of extra silverware pieces to make sure that anyone interested can have a part in the experience.
As we move into the Library we are greeted by Lumiere, the kind-hearted but rebellious maitre d' of the Beast's castle, who has been transformed into a candelabra. He explains how everyone must keep quiet, so as to surprise Belle, when he calls her into the library. The cast members, along with the narrator, keep the scene lively and moving along.
The experience ends with Belle meeting the Beast, a guest, in front of the fireplace. At the conclusion of the show, all the participants get their own photo taken with Belle, and the pictures are available for purchase outside the exit. Very innovative, hopefully there will be room for expansion of this attraction as this is sure to be a runaway hit for the new Fantasyland.
We took a few moments from IAAPA to visit the Magic Kingdom, and low and behold, magically the Dress Rehearsal of the New Fantasyland was open.
Beyond the impressive entrance, four new experiences awaited us. Here is just the first.
You can't miss with the beautiful artwork demonstrating Imagineering's lavish attention to detail of Ariel's Under the Sea attraction.
This is a view of the loading platform, it shows off the attractive ride vehicles and some of the wonderful artwork and this is only the beginning.
The bubbles rise all around you as you dive "Under the Sea" to start your journey.
Many of the scenes from the movie are brought to life for young and old to enjoy.
While we didn't have any little ones with us, we could hear the youngsters on the clam shell behind us shouting hi to Ariel.
Everyone's favorite characters are included as if guests were immersed in the movie itself.
With Sebastian directing the cast of characters, the ride incorporates music from the movie to enhance the experience.
As in the movie, the evil Ursula appears to to dampen the festive mood. But, true love conquers evil, King Triton willingly changes his beloved daughter daughter from a mermaid to a human, she marries Prince Eric and they live happily ever after.
After the wedding, complete with fireworks, guests are returned to the station, where the common refrain is "Can we do it again?"
