After a successful debut this year at sister park Legoland Florida, Legoland California has announced that Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty and all their friends will arrive in The Lego Movie World next spring.
The new two-acre land will be themed to Bricksburg and feature three attractions, a interactive play area and a meet and greet section. The addition will mark the park's 20th anniversary, quite a nice birthday present. “The Lego Movie World is Legoland California Resort’s largest Park
addition ever and we are thrilled to create an interactive experience
that fully immerses guests into a world that was so brilliantly created
by Lego and celebrated by the hugely popular Lego film franchise from
our friends at Warner Bros.,” said PeteRonchetti, the park's general manager.
The largest attraction in The Lego Movie World is the Masters of Flight flying theater attraction, seen above. Riders sit on triple-decker couches and fly into the Lego World which is projected all around them. The couches rotate 180 degree after loading to take flights, and the California version will feature two theaters to allow for more capacity than the one theater in the Florida version. The ride not only takes guests on a soaring adventure, but it also includes 4-D interactions like wind, mist and as the scent of pine and cotton candy, among others.
The park's will also build their own copy of Unikitty's Disco Drop, a family sized free fall. Standing 35 feet tall, the Disco Drop will gently drop riders down after giving them an aerial view of Bricksburg. The land's third attraction will be an exiting carousel that will be totally rethemed to fit The Lego Movie World.
The expansion will replace Legoland California's existing Duplo Playground (already relocated) and Lego Friends areas when it opens next year.
Since last summer Legoland California has been hard at work building a brand new attraction named Lego City Deep Sea Adventure, which takes riders on an adventurous submarine voyage to hunt for treasure.
The ride uses submarines that are actually submerged in water and hung from a track inside a massive building. The water that the submarines pass through will be filled with tons of Lego models along with 2,000 live animals according to the park, including sharks and stingrays.
The submarines just recently arrived at the park and were installed in the main show lagoon. Here is a shot of one of the submarines being lifted off the truck and into the ride building. Each submarine can seat up to 12 riders at a time, and there will be eight submarines on the track at one time.
The inside of the submarine allows enough room that everyone should feel comfortable, they do not look claustrophobic to me at all. Then again, visitors have loved the Submarine Voyage at Disneyland since 1959, which is the same concept as Legoland is employing here. While on the ride at Legoland touch screens inside the vessels will have guests aid the Lego "minifigure dive team to identify gems, pearls, Lego gold coins and more throughout the journey."
This isn't the first ride of this type for a Legoland park, as one is currently operating, and themed to Atlantis, at Legoland Windsor. Here is a video of that experience if you want a preview to see what its like.
The Lego City Deep Sea Adventure will open at Legoland California this Summer, with no exact date announced yet. Here is the full video that Legoland California released:
The single largest investment in any attraction at any Legoland theme park will take place in 2018 at Legoland California, in the form of a new Lego City: Deep Sea Adventure ride.
The first of its kind ride in North America features a giant building in which eight submarines (each with twelve riders) travel through a 300,000 gallon underground aquarium on a 4 minute adventure. Riders will look out the portholes of the submarine at real sharks, stingrays, and plenty of other sea creatures as they experience the Deep Sea Adventure. There will be upwards of 2,000 animals in the habitat when complete, and the ride will handle nearly 1,000 riders per hour.
The attraction will also feature interactive consoles that riders can use to discover hidden treasure throughout the ride, adding points to their total for each find of a ruby, pearl, coin or other treasure. Guests will assist a team of Lego divers who are treasure hunting - the park is already hard at work on creating these Lego figures.
Lego City: Deep Sea Adventure will be built on the site of the park's current miniature golf course, and is slated to open in Summer 2018.
The theme park also announced that a new 4-D Film, titled "Lego Ninjago, Master of the 4th Dimension," will open in January for park visitors. The film will combine 3-D visuals with in-theater effects, giving it the 4-D title.
Finally, the currently under construction Castle Hotel has been announced to open in the spring of 2018. Featuring 250 guest rooms all themed to the castles of the Lego series, the hotel will become the second on the resorts property.

Legoland California has announced new additions for both its upcoming 2017 season as well as the future beyond that. Let's take a look at all that is coming to the resort and theme park.
Legoland California will expand its water park offerings in time for summer 2017, with the addition of Surfer's Bay. Seen above, kids will be able to "surf" their way down a six-lane mat slide, competing to be the first across the finish line as they go. The attraction will be a part of a "California beach themed" expansion to the already diverse Legoland Water Park offerings. There will also be a new "spray ground" with "multiple water jets splashing on and off and plenty of new Lego models to create a fun place to cool off."
The excitement of Star Wars will be felt at Legoland California next year, with the addition of Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens miniland model display. The display will feature six scenes that represent the first 30 minutes of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and will be focused mostly on the planet of Jakku and its inhabitants and a 16 foot long model of the Star Destroyer Finalizer. The expansion will open in March of 2017.
The existing Legoland Hotel will also create new Lego Ninjago themed rooms, allowing them to "sleep in the company of Cole, Nya, Kai and Lloyd" in 18 of the hotel's rooms.
The park also gave a first look at their next big expansion, a brand new Lego Castle themed hotel. The 18 Ninjago themed rooms in the existing hotel will be replaced because they currently hold a castle theme. The new hotel's entrance is seen above, showing how the "premium themed" resort will immediately immerse visitors into another world as they arrive.
The castle themed hotel will hold a total of 250 rooms, complete with this expansive pool area, restaurant and other amenities. The park plans to break ground on the expansion in early 2017 with no opening date yet announced.
Continuing to expand the roster of amenities that help to transform their theme parks into destinations, two properties have new Legoland Castle Hotels planned for the near future. The concept art featured in this story is from Legoland Windsor, which has already announced the new resort and actually started construction on it.
The hotel is firmly centered in the world of Wizards and Knights from epic Kingdoms, and visitors become kings, queens, princesses and princes when they stay at the property.
The hotels will be fully themed from the outside in, but I think that's fairly evident in these concept drawings. It will be the second hotel at both Legoland Windsor and Legoland California, though the addition is still in the planning and approval states for California.
Features include 61 rooms at Windsor at 250 in California that are decked out in the style of Knights and Wizards, with additional themes being planned - especially at the larger California property.
As with the already successful regular Legoland Hotels, these new developments will feature other amenities such as their own restaurant and play areas both inside and outside. At Legoland California, the addition will go up near the main entrance, similar to what was done with the first resort.
The Legoland Castle Hotel is planned to open in July of 2017 at Legoland Windsor, and if all approvals are gained construction may start at Legoland California in early 2017 with an opening date not yet announced.
Starting May 5th, visitors to Legoland California will be able to train, explore and battle in the park's new Lego Ninjago World themed area. The latest expansion of the ever-growing theme park features all the Ninjago characters along with interactive exhibits that test kids' balance, agility, speed and creativity.
The themed area also includes 22 new Lego models and Zane's Temple Build, and area where visitors can free build with a large supply of Legos. Rounding out the offerings of Lego Ninjago World are Ninja Kitchen, a new dining facility, and Wu's Warehouse, a retail store.
The major attraction that will have guests lining up in droves is Ninjago The Ride, North America's first interactive dark ride featuring Maestro hang gesture technology. The feature retires the traditional 'blasters' found on similar rides, allowing guests to shoot fireballs, shockwaves, ice and more at enemies using just their hand movements.
“We’ve really taken Legoland California’s principle of ‘hands on, minds on’ to a whole new level,” said General Manager of Legoland California Resort Peter Ronchetti. “We’re firing the imagination to another degree taking the idea of using gestures to propel fire, ice, etc…it has never been done before and it’s bridging the gap between the old way of using physical props, bricks, and the like, with the new world of virtual technology.”
Riders collect points as they move through the ride, with winning totals displayed at the end. Real effects such as heat, smoke and wind make the 3-D experience into a 4-D one.
SoCal Attractions 360 was on hand at the ride's media event, and filmed this tour of the new area, ride queue and the actual ride experience.
Once aboard the 4-passenger vehicles, riders travel "through 13 different scenes encountering villains such as snakes, skeletons, ghosts, Lord Garmaddon (king of the Skulkuns) and ultimately, The Great Devourer…a giant serpent who can only be defeated by all of the ninja riders working together and using all the elements." The above video shows how riders can tell how they're doing on-screen by following the color assigned to them on the ride vehicle's dashboard.
While the ride and new area are just getting ready to officially open in California this week, the parent company of the parks is already planning similar Ninjago expansions at Legoland parks across the globe, including Legoland Florida in 2017.
Legoland California has called upon Triotech to create a new type of interactive dark ride where riders don't shoot guns, but instead undergo Ninja training where their hands become "powerful weapons able to shoot fireballs and lightning.
The Triotech Maestro system allows the use of either one or both hands, and since it is software base, any type of interactivity can be programmed. Snowball fights during winter, Easter egg battles in the spring, and water geysers for the hot summer months are just a few of the possibilities. The Merlin Magic team is bringing this ride to Legolands in California, Billund, and Malaysia later in the year.
Here is one of the young Ninja who is led by Master Wu. He weighs about 800 pounds and took a master modeler only three weeks to create. He has become a popular photo spot during the show.

Here you can see one team helping the young Ninja while another group awaits their turn.
Once the guests complete their training/practice, there performance is scored and tracked through the different colors so they can see where the projectiles are going and adjust their aim accordingly.
Here you can see the riders wearing 3-D glasses, holding their hands above the sensor. The distance above the sensor controls how high and the direction "projectile" travels. The fact that it is software based without a fixed pointing device allows for easy adaptation for different themed experiences.

Debuting at the Legoland Florida Resort in January of 2016, and soon after at the Legoland California Resort on February 6th, will be an all new 4D adventure film themed to the popular Lego Movie.
The Lego Movie 4D A New Adventure was previously hinted about by the chain of parks, operated by Merlin Entertainments, but now new details have been made available. The film is being created in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and Lego Systems A/S, and will eventually premier at all the Legoland Parks around the globe and the Legoland Discovery Centers as well.
The film will follow a new journey for the characters of The Lego Movie, including Emmet, Wyldstyle, Unikitty, Benny and MetalBear. A new villain character, voiced by Patton Oswalt and named Risky Business, will be added to the series. The attraction is being directed by Rob Schrab, who is also directing the squeal to The Lego Movie in 2018, and will also feature many of the original voice actors from the feature film like Elizabeth Banks and Nick Offerman.
The plot finds the characters having received a "mysterious invitation leading them to a new theme park where
all of the rides are based on the characters’ adventures in “The Lego
Movie.” But not all is as it seems as the heroes are once again thrust
into the middle of an evil secret plot, only this time, it will be up to
the audience to use their Master Builder skills to help save them!"
The 4D attraction will feature special effects such as smoke, water, wind and lighting to create a "larger-than-life" experience for guests. In a sense the film will also bridge the gap between the first Lego Movie and the next, still to come.
Legoland California will debut a "world's first" ride next year as a part of a new expanded area themed around the world of Lego Ninjago. The new land will be located under a giant arch behind the Imagination Zone, and will feature a large courtyard filled with Ninjago training activities, along with an Asian cuisine location and retail store. The training activities will include balance spinners, reflex tests, a rock wall and more - all in preparation of the area's biggest attraction, Ninjago The Ride.
Ninjago - The Ride will be manufactured by Triotech, the company behind Cedar Fair's recent dark ride instillations. Instead of using a blaster to interact with digital media, this new ride will be the first ever to react to hand gestures - like a karate chop for instance - and correlate them to what takes place on the screen.
More details on the experience were released by the park: "Through 3D imagery, high-tech sensors and the use of hand movements in a
striking motion, up to four riders per car, representing the four main
Ninjago characters, can blast animated fireballs, lightning, shockwaves
and ice as they travel through dojos to master their skills before
heading into battle. Riders collect points for their training and
battle efforts throughout the ride and scores are displayed when their
quest is completed. 4D effects such as heat, smoke and wind are also
incorporated throughout the adventure, giving guests the ultimate
interactive experience."
It sounds pretty neat to be able to blast at creatures with just the movement of your hands, I'm quite excited to see how the technology will be applied to the ride, especially in terms of aim. The interactive nature - plus the challenge of accumulating points - will make this one a huge hit with families.
Legoland California, which opened a hotel and water park in recent years, has seen 11 straight years of attendance growth - an amazing feat.
A similar expansion, featuring the same ride, will also open in 2016 at Legoland Billund in Denmark.
The Legoland California Resort has had an amazing decade of growth, seeing ten straight years of attendance growth. The park has expanded greatly over that time, creating new lands with attractions and even and entire family oriented water park.
2015 will be another year of growth, as seen in another round of attraction announcements today. The first of which is the addition of a large - six feet across - Lego model of the Death Star in the park's Star Wars Miniland.
The park was the first in the Legoland chain to open a Star Wars Miniland, and it has remained extremely popular. The new display will not only contain the Death Star, but also iconic film scenes including when "Luke Skywalker maneuvered his X-wing fighter thought the combat zone and trench to blow-up the station and its planet destroying super laser." Additional Lego models of Stormtroopers, a Rebel X-wing fighter pilot and an Imperial Star Ship pilot will be featured.
The new Lego Star Wars Miniland Death Star will open on March 5th, 2015.
While the Death Star is an exciting addition, Legoland California will also open a brand new themed section, named Lego Friends Heartlake City.
The area will represent a "significant investment" and be themed around the Lego Friends line of products, focusing on the lives and personalities of five girls: Mia, Olivia, Andrea, Stephanie and Emma. "The new area invites guests to sing along with Andrea at her tour bus,
stroll through Lego horse stables, enjoy a building activity at one of
the Lego brick tables and go for a horseback ride on the carousel in
Mia’s family ranch."
The concept art of the new area shows some of the additions, which also include a new splash play area, a large outdoor stage and the aforementioned Carousel. The Lego Friends Heartlake City expansion is scheduled to open in Summer 2015.
Legoland California has opened their new water park expansion, known officially as the Lego Legends of Chima Water Park, presented by Cartoon Network to excited guests.
The highly anticipated addition builds on the resort's existing water area, bringing several new attractions along with it. The 250,000 gallon Lion Temple Wave pool is sure to be a popular spot for families, along with the water play area known as Cragger's Swamp. Smaller activities can also be found throughout the new grounds, including the Build-A-Boat river and the Speedorz Arena, both of which allow kids to build their own vehicles with Legos.
“Since LEGOLAND Water Park opened in 2010, our guests have been asking for more,” said Legoland California General Manager Peter Ronchetti. “This Chima Water Park has such incredible theming and so many awesome interactive features, I’m excited for our guests to experience it and expand their day here at the Resort.”
With the recently opened Legoland Hotel on property, and this new water park expansion, the resort is poised to see even more growth in the coming years. The question is, what can they build next?
Across the country Legoland Florida has also opened a brand new attraction, named Duplo Valley. The renovated area is dedicated to very small children, with larger than life animals and other farm themed attractions.
Duplo Valley is named after the Lego Duplo product line, which uses larger blocks for preschool kids. The new area contains several new rides, including the Duplo Train seen above. Parents are able to ride along with their kids, so they can experience the fun along with them.
Other additions include the Duplo Tractor ride, Duplo Splash & Play - a great area filled with all sorts of water features that is sure to keep kids happy for a long while. The Duplo Barn, seen above, includes many play elements and features an enclosed air-conditioned setting.
“We couldn’t be more excited to officially open Duplo Valley,” said Legoland Florida General Manager Adrian Jones. “Our newest expansion gives toddlers (and parents) a completely new way to play, adding to our already fantastic lineup of more than 50 rides, shows and attractions here at Legoland Florida.”
The park has already announced that a Legoland Hotel will join the property in 2015, featuring 152 highly themed rooms and suites.
It won't be long now until the new Lego Legends of Chima Water Park opens at Legoland California, in fact it is just over a month until the May 24th, 2014 grand opening.
"The largest Lego model for the new Chima Water Park, a Lego Lion Temple arch, was installed over Easter weekend. Stretching 18 ½ feet high and 14 feet wide and weighing 2,116 pounds, the Lego arch will stream water beneath the massive lion head at the entrance to the Lion Temple Wave Pool. Created out of 260,000 Lego bricks, the arch is the centerpiece of the new Water Park as it “protects” the interactive wave pool designed for families with young children."
Workers placed the giant lion model with the floating Mt. Cavora in the background, seen in the photo above. Both are parts of the wave pool, but workers are busy all over creating new attractions for the expansion. One of them is Eglor's Build-A-Boat, where "young guests can build their own boat and race against their
friends and build their own Lego scene in Chima. Six Lego models will be
featured in this area, including four miniature scale models of areas
within Chima Water Park and an Eagle Head that stands 11-feet-high."
Here we see construction work taking place with Legoland California's existing water park in the background. When the current expansion is complete the park will have a very large family water area, perfect for a day in the sun.
The giant Mt. Cavora was recently lifted 40 feet into the air at the Lego Legends of Chima water park expansion at Legoland California. The new section will have a selection of water based activities for families, including the large Lion Temple Wave Pool. The wave pool is where Mt. Cavora has been placed and will released 400 gallons of water per minute onto park visitors below.
The enormous 'floating mountain' was created by Storyland Studios in Lake Elsinore, CA and took a team of 20 builders more than four months to design and construct. "The floating mountain, known for providing the great energy source “CHI” to the eight animal tribes, is 23-feet tall, 13-feet wide and weighs more than 11,000 pounds. An animal from each tribe is represented on Mt. Cavora: a lion, an eagle, a crocodile, a gorilla, a bear, a rhinoceros, a wolf and a raven."
Legoland California also released some great footage of the mountain going into place. The film also gives us an aerial perspective on the expansion, showing off all the additions. While not complete, you can see above that a great deal of work is underway, including new attractions, food, and open spaces to play or relax. In the background of this shot is a new concrete pad that might be for Cragger's Swamp, a "hands-on water play area that invites you to ride water slides, blast
water cannons and jets and slide through the head of a massive
crocodile."
This view shows off the surprisingly large Lion Temple Wave Pool. Since the pool is aimed at families it won't feature massive waves, but I did not expect it to be quite so large when complete! Other new additions to the Legends of Chima water park include Explorers Forest, a "lush and tropical forest where you will be greeted by Gorzan the Gorilla in his 15-foot tall mech suit" and Rhino Beach, "a sand filled oasis that offers you a place to get some shade, lounge and rest."
The Lego Legends of Chima Water Park will open to Legoland California guests on May 24th.
Back in September the Legoland California Resort announced a major water park addition for next year, themed to the Legends of Chima brand. At that time there was no concept art for the addition available, but now the park has released our first look at the expansion:
Above is a drawing of the Lion Temple Wave Pool, a central part of the new area at the Legoland California Resort. Visitors can enter through a giant lion archway, behind which is an impressive 40 foot tall floating Mount Cavora. Similar thematic elements were utilized in Legoland Florida's Chima-themed expansion this year, and no doubt they will look equally great in this setting. The Lion Temple Wave Pool is being designed with smaller children in mind, not to include giant waves found in a typical wave pool.
The floating Mount Cavora will also dumb 400 gallons of water per minute into the pool below, and have and animal from each of the eight Chima tribes carved into its surface.
Other previously announced additions in the Legends of Chima Water Park include Cragger's Swamp, a "hands-on water play area," Build-A-Boat, where children can build boats and learn about water currents, and the Wolves' Cantina, a food located themed to the wolf tribe.
Guests to the Legoland California Resort will find a major water park expansion when they visit in 2014, and the new area will be themed to the Lego Legends of Chima franchise. The Chima brand was just used this year in a new land at Legoland Florida, which became an immediate success for the theme park.
Legoland California had a very busy 2013 season which featured the opening of the first Lego branded hotel in North America. The park's General Manager, Peter Ronchetti, plunged a shovel into the sand at the park and uncovered a box full of CHI - the mystical power source that animal tribes in the World of Chima battle over.

“2014 is a big investment year for us. A great corner stone to the Resort’s success is listening to our guests and striving to increase the value of their experience,” said General Manager Peter Ronchetti. “We are excited to build an entirely new Water Park based on the LEGO Chima product line immersing children and their families into an interactive world of play!”
It sounds like the 2.5 acre Chima area will be an addition to the existing water park, which first opened in 2010. Separately themed, the new addition will be aimed at families with smaller children and will be located adjacent to the Pirate Reef attraction. While not an official number, it is expected that north of $10 million will be spent on the water park addition.
Legoland California has detailed four of the eight main areas of the new water park expansion, starting with the biggest - the Lion Temple Wave Pool. Featuring a Lego archway entrance, the pool will feature water cascading down a 30 foot tall floating "Mount Cavora" along with plenty of waves and fun for families.
Cragger's Swamp will be a new hands-on play area that features water slides, blast water cannons and jets - one of the slides will exit through the head of a massive crocodile. Eglor's Build-A-Boat will let guests building their own boat and "learn how to change the currents, build and dodge obstacles and race against their friends."
The final announced part of the expansion is the Wolves' Cantina, a food service location that will keep guests in the Chima water park fueled for their busy day.
With the addition of the hotel this year it makes an awful lot of sense to build onto the water park next year, creating further need for guests to stay and extra day. The level of theming in the water park is expected to make it feel like its own world, further attracting guests to spend longer amounts of time in the water area.
No drawings of the expansion were ready in time for the announcement, so we will stay tuned to see exactly what the Chima water park will look like.
An epic story requires an epically sized Lego model, it seems. After debuting in Times Square in New York City, the world's largest Lego model has landed at the Legoland California Resort.
The model is a 1:1 replica of the Lego Star Wars X-wing Starfighter, and it stands 11 feet tall, is 43 feet long, has a wingspan of 44 feet and weighs 46,000 pounds.
Those are some impressive dimensions! The X-wing Starfighter was built in honor of Lego Star Wars The Yoda Chronicles, a "new action-packed story on Cartoon Network featuring Yoda, the Jedi Master."
The model will be on display at the park to all guests through the end of the year.
The timing of the arrival of the model is no coincidence, as this weekend is the park's annual Lego Star Wars Days. The event includes activities such as a Droid Hunt with the 501st Legion, a Star Wars themed costume contest, Jedi Trivia, a Lego building competition, and plenty more fun.
