Six Flags Great Adventure has announced that they are making a huge investment in Hurricane Harbor, the water park adjacent to the theme park, for the 2023 season.  In fact, the investment will be the largest at the water park in two decades.  The changes will be seen throughout the park, and include many improvements, additional amenities and a new family attraction.

Interim Park President Randy Wilke highlighted the new additions, saying, “As one of the Northeast’s largest water parks, we are focused on increasing value for families and elevating the guest experience. This significant investment brings state-of-the-art kids’ attractions geared towards children under 42 inches tall, plus park enhancements aimed at providing exciting new experiences for all ages.”

The biggest draw will be a new interactive splash play tower named Splash Island.  It will feature a "playful sea creature beach theme" with several kid friendly water slides, vibrant colors and more that 50 play features.  It will feature a giant tipping bucket that will splash down on spectators below, and the entire addition is sure to keep families busy for hours this summer.

Hurricane Harbor will also be adding seven new kid friendly water slides, all smaller versions of popular grown up attractions.  With names like Cowabunga, Jellyfish Twist, Shark Attack and the Stingray Racer, just to name a few, the new kids slides will be a huge improvement over the park's current offerings.

Throughout the entire park there will be more shade structures added, more cabanas available to rent and new dining offerings.  These include a new open air dining experience near Splash Island that will be able to keep hungry families playing in the sun all day.

Six Flags Great Adventure is giving visitors a number of reasons to be excited for the park's 2022 season.  They've announced a big line up of changes that will create the "largest array of improvements in the parks' nearly 50-year history, featuring robust enhancements to the guest experience including new dining, rides, events and animal experiences."

The changes will be taking place throughout the entire park, with even the main marquee that greets guests out front getting a total make over - concept art for that can be seen up top.  Other initiatives will include beautification and modernization throughout both the theme park and Wild Safari.  This includes "increased capacity and streamlined operations in rides, food service, and admissions; new theming and reintroduction of several popular rides for daredevils and junior thrill seekers; aesthetic and comfort enhancements in both parks; the debut of popular food brands and new dining options; a major summer event and more guest amenities."

One of the largest changes is the return of Medusa, which was once named Medusa but then changed to Bizarro and now will once more be named Medusa.  The B&M Floorless coaster first opened in 1999 and features 7 inversions.  The ride will return its "gold-rush era backstory" and will feature bright orange supports with green track.  The coaster's trains will also be updated as seen in these photos from the park.

One of the theme park's largest children's area's will become Jr. Thrillseekers this year, completing a two year renovation of the entire section.  Jr. Thrillseekers will offer eight rides in total, including the Lil' Devil Coaster, which opened late last season.  Also in 2022 the Barnstormer ride will return into operation.  Jr. Thrillseekers will offer new shopping, dining and shaded seating to keep families comfortable.

That's not all though, not by a long stretch.  Here are other new items per the park's release for the 2022 season:

 

·         Single Rider Lines – To shorten wait times by filling in every available seat, single rider lines enable rides to operate with the maximum number of guests. This feature will be added to Jersey Devil Coaster, El Toro, Nitro and Medusa;
·         Q SMART Technology – To improve the guest experience through enhanced ride line speed and efficiency, Six Flags will transition its’ THE FLASH™ Pass Q-bot to mobile Q SMART technology. From the convenience of a mobile phone and the ease of an app, with the touch of a button guests will be able to maximize their time in the park, spending less time waiting in line and more time enjoying rides, dining, shopping, and entertainment;
·         Enhanced Mobile App – A new mobile app feature that allows guests to add their pass to their Google Pay Wallet or Apple Wallet will expedite the front gate experience and reduce wait time;
·         “Wow” Moments – In 2022, more emphasis will be placed on creating “Wow” moments through fun and memorable guest interactions, beautiful landscaping views, additional seating for relaxation, and a massive, new marquee on Rt. 537;
·         Restaurant Makeovers – Two of the park’s largest indoor restaurants, Yum Yum Café and Granny’s, will reopen with an entirely new interior look. New floors, décor, menu boards, and traffic flow will enhance the dining experience;
·         Fatburger® – Since 1952, Fatburger has been serving delicious, made-to-order food. Now with more than 200 locations worldwide, Fatburger will deliver hot and fresh treats like juicy burgers, creamy milkshakes, and crispy onion rings to guests in Adventure Alley;
·         New Dining Options – The park will expand its culinary options with freshly roasted rotisserie chicken added to the menu at Granny’s, freshly-brewed coffee creations at Sweet Treats, proudly serving Starbucks® and many additional high quality offerings;
·         Family Restroom – To better accommodate the needs of all guests, the theme park will introduce two new family restrooms to the Adventure Alley section;
Volta Electric Vehicle Charging Stations – Compatible with all electric vehicles, units will be available in the theme park, water park and safari parking lots;
·         New Pavilions – The park’s high-tech, touchless security screening entry area and the popular Johnny Rocket’s outdoor dining patio will sport new wooden pavilion shade coverings;
·         Summer Vibes Festival – As sun-kissed dreams come to life, guests will drench themselves in a kaleidoscope of color at this new, summer festival, which will run July 16 to August 14. Mouth-watering treats, beat-the-heat beverages, bold, eye-popping spectacles, live entertainment, and colorful curiosities will immerse guests in the reverie of summer;
·         New Animal Adventures – The Wild Safari’s animal care team welcomes three new giraffe calves, a new male rhinoceros, and an array of spring babies. The Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure will feature an entirely new audio tour guests can stream from any mobile device and an expanded, three-lane roadway with five newly paved miles;
·         New ‘Giraffe Encounter’ Safari VIP Tour – Great Adventure theme park will launch a new safari VIP experience, the Giraffe Encounter Tour. This off-road adventure on military-style, open-air trucks will feature an informative and engaging tour guide through seven sections of the Wild Safari and the opportunity to hand-feed giraffes at Wild Safari’s Camp Aventura. Tour guests can also meet small exotic animals up-close. Tour tickets may be purchased in advance or at the park; and
·         BATMAN™ The Ride – The epic, floorless, chairlift-style BATMAN The Ride will return with a bold, shiny coat of paint. This five-looping scream machine continues to rank as a fan favorite as it approaches its 30th birthday.

As you can see, the park really means it when they say this is the most changes they've ever done in one season!  The Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure opens March 19 and Six Flags Great Adventure opens April 2, 2022.

Fright Fest Returns to Six Flags Great Adventure This Fall With New Scares

Six Flags Great Adventure is excited to announce their line up of attractions and spooky fun for this year's Fright Fest, which kicks off on September 10th.  This year Fright Fest returns after taking a season off, bigger and better than before with new attractions, returning haunts, family fun during the day, live shows (like the fan-favorite Dead Man's Party) and more.  This year reservations will be required for all visitors to make sure they have the safest, most enjoyable day while at the park.

As in past years the park will offer plenty of daytime fun for the entire family during Fright Fest.  From Scarecrow Street, decorated in its Halloween finest, to a Spooktacular Dance Party, there's something for everyone.  And, of course, Trick-or-Treat Trail will return for kids 12 and under to get a sweet treat.

New this year are Fright Fest Power Hours, taking place on Thursdays in September, Wednesdays and Thursdays in October plus October 25th through 28th.  This private event for thrill seekers will offer exclusive ride time on the park's thrilling coasters and select rides, plus access to indoor and outdoor haunted mazes at reduced prices.  Separate tickets and reservations are required.

Also, during the month of September there will be Frightworks, a dazzling display of fireworks set to spooktacular music.  The show will take place on weekends in September as part of the Member & Season Pass Appreciation Month.

Once the evening sets in and the frights come out visitors will find new attractions at this year's Fright Fest.  These include a new scare zone named Venom Gulch, set in Frontier Adventures.  The area will be set as a Wild West town that was abandonded after a mine collapse.  Per the park, the town folk up and left, but the miners' spirits remained to poison the town.

A brand new haunted maze will also debut this year, named The Lab.  Guests will venture into a secretive laboratory where "mysterious and unlicensed experiments are the order of the day."

Additionally, the park's Xpedition Dino attraction will transform into Xpedition Dino: Survival, another new haunted maze.  While fun an educational during the day, the experience will change at night and feature blood-thirsty dinosaurs that are after the guests.

Elsewhere in the park guests will also find a new show named Witch's Brew, meant for younger guests, where a friendly neightborhood witch will tell stores.  Plus, the Lil' Devil Coaster will debut to guests this fall, located near the park's new star ride, the Jersey Devil Coaster.

There are tons of returning shows and haunted attractions that will be offered at Six Flags Great Adventure's Fright Fest this year.  Shows include the Arrival Ghoul Parade, The Awakening, Dead Man's Party: Grave Stories, Unleashed, Blood Drums and Doc Swan's Sideshow of Oddities.

 

As far as haunted attractions go, there's a big list of favorites coming back as well.  Scare Zones include Scarecrow Street, District 6, Clown Town, and Lake of the Lake Cemetery.  Haunted Mazes, which require an additional fee, will see the return of Reflections of the Dead, Fears, The Manor, Big Top Terror: Forgotten Carnival 3-D, Blood Shed, Wicked Woods and Aftermath.

Six Flags Great Adventure Reintroducing Kiddie Coaster as Lil' Devil Coaster

Six Flags Great Adventure has been teasing the return of an attraction on social media for a while now, and has finally revealed that the park's children's roller coaster will be returning soon as the Lil' Devil Coaster.  The ride was originally known as Road Runner Railway, and had to be removed in order to make room for the Jersey Devil Coaster to be built.  With the return of the Lil' Devil Coaster, Six Flags Great Adventure will offer visitors 14 different roller coasters to choose from.

Those in the park recently had already spotted some footer construction going on inside the park, not far from the entrance to the plaza for the Jersey Devil Coaster.  The Lil' Devil Coaster will be located within the Safari Kids area, but when at the park it seemed like the new location for the coaster also made it quickly accessible from the Jersey Devil Coaster area.

The park has painted the ride's track a bright orange, I haven't seen what the supports may be just yet.  The ride opened in 1999 and is one of Zamperla's Family Gravity Coasters, which can be found at a ton of parks across the country.

The Jersey Devil Coaster Celebrates Grand Opening at Six Flags Great Adventure

Today marks the grand opening of Six Flags Great Adventure's latest thrill machine, the Jersey Devil Coaster, an innovative and world recording breaking single rail roller coaster.  Fans have been anxiously waiting to get their first rides in on the Jersey Devil Coaster, and after several days of previews the ride is now open to the public.

Six Flags Great Adventure invited us to take some rides on the coaster this past week, and what a great experience it is!  The coaster was created by Rocky Mountain Construction, and utilizes the company's 'Raptor' style track, a single monorail type beam that offers passengers a thrilling and smooth ride.  Riders would have to travel a great distance to find another ride of this style in operation - the Jersey Devil Coaster is the only of its kind in the entire Eastern United States.

Riders sit in single-passengers cars which make up a train of 12 riders (the ride has four trains in total) - the cars feature a low inline style that lets riders seemingly straddle the monorail track directly below them.  This provides a ride style that is not found on many roller coasters; unique and offering a new take on traditional coaster elements and forces.

The Jersey Devil Coaster is specially themed to Six Flags Great Adventure's location and its history.  The park is set in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, and it is said that the Jersey Devil has haunted the forest for centuries, "soaring stealthily through the woods in the dark of the night before attacking its prey."  The new coaster is located within these woods on the park's property, adjacent to the park's Great Lake in a shady setting.

The new coaster's queue tells this story in great detail through a number of story boards, giving riders-to-be bits of the lore as they move through the covered queue sections.

The sinister air surrounding the ride is complimented by some unusual facts related to the number 13:  The Jersey Devil Coaster is the park's 13th coaster, the new ride is 13 stories tall, each train has 12 humans and the Jersey Devil lead car for 13 riders and the ride is officially opening on the 13th of June.

The Jersey Devil Coaster will be an immediate hit with riders of all ages, as it provides a smooth and repeatable ride experience.  The trains climb a 130 foot lift hill after departing from the station and are quickly plummeting down an extra-steep 87 degree first drop.  With a maximum speed of 58 miles per hour, the trains scream through the ride's 3,000 feet of track.

The ride is one of a new breed of roller coasters, which allows it to take the title of the world's tallest, fastest and longest single-rail roller coaster.  The ride's impressive design features several stellar elements, including three inversions.  From a Raven Dive to a 180-degree stall, riders experience a variety of maneuvers that keep them guessing what may come next.

The long design of the train also allows for different ride experiences as you move from the front of the train toward the back.  All seats provide and excellent amount of air-time as the Jersey Devil runs through the course, but the far back seat is especially impressive in that regard.

While the coaster does feature over the shoulder restraints, they are unobtrusive and allow for a very free feeling while on the ride.  There's nothing quite like riding with your arms up and floating upside down through that 180-degree stall!  The coaster's quick transitions also give great lateral forces, paired with the low seats to give riders a variety of thrilling moments.

As a great note for visitors, the Jersey Devil Coaster only has a 48 inch height requirement, allowing for a larger section of guests to ride - if they're brave enough of course!  Six Flags Great Adventure is already well known for their impressive set of thrill rides, and the Jersey Devil Coaster goes perfectly with them - offering a thrilling but innovative experience for visitors.

The Jersey Devil Coaster Now Testing at Six Flags Great Adventure

Six Flags Great Adventure started testing on The Jersey Devil Coaster late last week, and has shared some amazing aerial footage of the event.  The new coaster, which is a triple record-breaking instillation, was sent roaring through the Pine Barrens on its journey over 3,000 feet of thrilling track.

 

The park's engineering and maintenance staff are working to complete an extensive testing schedule on the world's tallest, fastest and longest single-rail coaster.  The park is currently loading water filled test dummies to simulate human passengers, and these can be seen in the in-line trains in the footage.

The Jersey Devil Coaster stands 13 stories tall, hits a maximum speed of 58 miles per hour and a trip on the coaster is highlighted by five intense elements including three inversions.  The ride will use twelve passenger trains, with each car seating only one person with their legs straddling the monorail track.  The coaster's first drop dives toward the ground at an impressive 87 degrees.

Xpedition Dino to Open at Six Flags Great Adventure on May 28th

Six Flags Great Adventure is giving park guests yet another thrilling attraction to explore as the park will debut the Xpedition Dino experience starting May 28th.  The special attraction will be at the park for visitors to experience through September 7th.

The family-friendly activity treats guests to a "Jurassic adventure" and will feature some 30 life-sized dinosaurs with realistic movement and sound.  Visitors will be able to choose whether they want to drive through the attraction in their own vehicles as part of the Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure, or explore it by foot.

During the day visitors will partake in Xpedition Dino as an add on to the Wild Safari Drive-Thru Adventure, safely from their own vehicles.  The private wooded path, filled with dinosaurs, will be accompanied by a custom soundtrack that guests can stream from any mobile device while in their vehicle.

Once the safari closes each day the Xpedition Dino attraction will become a "thrilling and educational" add-on to the theme park.  Guests can venture down the wooded path and by the dinosaurs at their own pace, enjoying detailed information at each dinosaur - plus all the photo opportunities that come with a walking expedition.  Dino selfies!

Included among the 30 different dinosaurs along the trail guests will see a Tyrannosaurus (T. Rex), Triceratops, Brachiosaurus, Megalosaurus, Utahraptor, and an Iguanodon - plus many more.

Xpedition Dino is a small upcharge to Memberships, Season Passes and daily tickets.  Tickets and reservations should be made in advance on the park's website.

Six Flags Great Adventure Launches Coaster Power Hours Event

Roller coaster fans have a new way to get in some extra ride time as Six Flags Great Adventure has announced Coaster Power Hours, special event times when guests can get exclusive ride time on the park's towering coasters.

 

The event will take place on Thursday and Friday evenings starting Friday April 16th, with Thursday evenings starting on May 6th.  Friday evening hours will be from 6 pm to 11 pm, and Thursdays the event will run from 4 pm until 9 pm.

Riders will get exclusive ride time on up to 12 of the park's famous roller coasters.  The limited-attendance event will feature special ticket pricing with deep discounts available for season pass holders and members.  The event will also feature music, specialty food, free parking and additional surprises.  The park also says that one coaster will feature a special, "limited-time experience" during the event as Skull Mountain becomes Skull Mountain "Remix" with "pumping music and moving lights," only on during the event.

While the schedule of rides is always subject to change, the park plans to offer Kingda Ka, Nitro, El Toro, Skull Mountain "Remix," Bizarro, Batman: The Ride, The Joker, Superman Ultimate Flight, The Dark Knight, Green Lantern, Runaway Mine Train and the Harley Quinn Crazy Train during Coaster Power Hours.

Six Flags Rockin' Drive-In Laser Light Spectacular Heads to Six Flags Great Adventure March 18-21

Six Flags Great Adventure is offering something special to families looking for a safe way to get out of their homes on the weekend of March 18th through 21st.  The park will feature the Six Flags Rockin' Drive-In Laser Light Spectacular on evenings during those dates, with two shows each night - 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm.

The Rockin' Drive-In Laser Light Spectacular first debuted last month at Six Flags Darien Lake in New York, and was a hit with guests who enjoyed the combination of laser light effects, lights, special effects and a "rocking" soundtrack.

At Six Flags Great Adventure guests will park in the main lot every-other space for social distancing, and before and during the show there will be food and merchandise available to purchase.  Also of note, the park's Wild Safari  Drive-Thru Adventure will also open that weekend on March 20th, with the theme park kicking off its season on March 27th.

The cost for each person to attend the 30 minute Rockin' Drive-In Laser Light Spectacular is $14.99 per person and $9.99 for active season pass holders and members.  Reservations are required ahead of time, and are available on the park's website.

Six Flags Great Adventure Tops Off New For 2021 Jersey Devil Coaster

As expected, Six Flags Great Adventure was able to hold their topping off ceremony for the Jersey Devil Coaster early this week, completing the 130 apex of the ride and connecting the track layout.  The new coaster is set to open in 2021, though an exact date is not available quite yet.

The Jersey Devil Coaster is one of Rocky Mountain Construction's Raptor style coasters, the largest of its kind to date.  The ride stands 130 feet tall and will feature single file trains that will hit a top speed of 58 miles per hour while they cover 3,000 feet of track.

In these photos supplied by Six Flags Great Adventure, crews from TCN & Co. can be seen placing the final section of track - which starts the 87 degree first drop.  As is common with the final piece of track, officials from TCN & Co., the ride's manufacturer RMC and the Six Flags project supervisor all signed the track before it went into place.

The theme park reports that now that the track and supports are installed they will move on to other important tasks, such as:
 

• Installing the chain link lift mechanism that will hoist riders to the top of the 13-story hill;

• Adding four devilishly-designed trains that feature an inline style, with riders sitting low and single file while straddling the smooth, I-beam track;

• Building the ride station including a moving platform, transfer track, maintenance area and queue;

• Installing the ride controls;

• Extensive ride testing; and

• Inspections and NJ state certification.

Six Flags Great Adventure Ready to Top Out The Jersey Devil Coaster in New Updates

Six Flags Great Adventure had a very busy past couple of weeks with regard to construction of The Jersey Devil Coaster, and has shared multiple updates with us during that time.  The park has gotten extremely close to topping the ride off, and at this point if they haven't already I would expect to see the ride's track completed early this coming week.

The park's updates cover a lot of ground.  First (up top) we saw the park continue to place pieces of track that were mostly toward the ground, like the intense turn around seen above.  Then the park quickly completed many of the ride's air-time hills, and while not the most glamorous portion of the ride, the brake run and station area started to get some attention (above).

Then just most recently things got even more exciting as the park started to put the track on the lift hill, and get the apex of the ride ready to receive the final track segments.  The ride looks beautiful in these photos, make sure to check them out.

At the end of this past week the park was just about ready to complete the ride, and as seen above, only one track segment was needed to complete things.  I'm not sure if they added that yet or not, but technically I guess the highest part of the ride is kinda in place so it's kinda topped off?  Either way, who really cares because this is amazing progress for one of the most anticipated new rides for 2021!

Six Flags Great Adventure Confirms Major Work on The Jersey Devil Coaster has Resumed

While the status of some 2021 projects still may be questionable, thankfully we got an update from Six Flags Great Adventure that confirms that major work on The Jersey Devil Coaster has started again.  The park took to their socials to share two photos, both posted here, of new construction that has gone up on the ride.

Yesterday they shared that a shiny section of orange track for the ride was lifted into place, and also some supplemental support items like an access staircase also went in.  That's progress, people!

Six Flags Great Adventure is doubling down on their holiday magic this year, offering guests not only Holiday in the Park on weekends but now also the Holiday in the Park Drive-Thru Experience on select weekday evenings from November 30th through December 17th.

Designed to allow visitors to celebrate the park's festive atmosphere from the safety of their own vehicle, the Drive-Thru Experience will still show off the park's million plus lights, decorations and holiday fun.  The journey will be paired with holiday music and live entertainment along the way.

As noted above by the park's president, visitors will be able to drive directly through the theme park, through 12 different themed areas spread over 140 acres.  Driving through the park on its own is a very unique experience!

For the safety of guests reservations are required for a trip to the Holiday in the Park Drive-Thru Experience.  Admission is free for those who have a season pass or membership, and tickets are sold on a per person basis.

Still offering Thrills By Day and Chills By Night, Six Flags Great Adventure's Hallofest is temporarily replacing Fright Fest in 2020 and serving up safe fall fun for all.  The event is currently underway at the theme park, operating on Fridays through Sundays all the way until November 1st - plus some weekdays the week of Halloween.

Visitors to the park who are familiar with Fright Fest will still find many familiar activities and scares, though Six Flags' comprehensive COVID-19 safety plan remains strictly in place.  This includes mandatory face masks, temperature screenings, social distancing, increased sanitization standards and more.

During the day visitors to Hallofest will enjoy attractions such as the Trick-or-Treat Trail, a hay bale maze, Pumpkin Patch Lane - featuring tons of decorations, pumpkins and hay bales, and the beautifully decorated Scarecrow Street - the festive name of Main Street during the event.  There is even a roving magician who is sure to entertain visitors.  Families will also love the ability to check out special food treats such as caramel apples and funnel cakes made with Snickers candy.  Yum.

After 6 pm the park will feature an array of spooky attractions, all keeping COVID-19 safety precautions in mind.  In total there will be four scare zones, three live shows and three outdoor haunted mazes.

Scare zones include Scarecrow Street After Dark, when the park's Main Street takes a chilling turn in the area surrounding the orange fountain, District 6 Unearthed, features fog, lights, sirens and ghouls in a gritty area that mutant villains have taken over, Lady of the Lake Cemetery, filled with fog and the undead near the Great Lake, and ClownTown, where Movietown becomes inhabited with plenty of wicked clowns and their tricks. 

The Emergence is the production that sets off the creepy fun at 6 pm, with a horde of ghouls emerging into the park from a different location each night, PrimeEvil Percussion is a pulse-pounding percussion show and Street Cirque features performers in the streets showing off awe-inspiring talents.

Haunted Mazes, which require a special Hallo-Maze ticket, include Mama's Farm, a nightmarish homestead of half-human, half-animal mutants, Apocalypse, deep in the woods guests will find what happens if you come too close to scavengers, Wicked Woods, a fan favorite that takes guests on a dark walk into the night, and Reflections of the Dead, the park's mirror maze which is filled with not human actors but special effects and lighting tricks.

The park's massive thrill ride collection is also open during Hallofest, which includes the park's mega lineup of roller coasters.  With the sun now setting much earlier each day, that means coaster rides in the dark!
