SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment Announces New Waterpark Additions Across the Country

There are a slew of new additions coming to several SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment properties next year, as a series of announcements over the park week have shown.  Up first is Water Country USA, located near Busch Gardens Williamsburg, which will debut Aquazoid Amped in May 2022.  The park has been working on the park's large family raft ride, Aquazoid, for some time now and we've been expecting a renovated version to debut soon.  

 

The Amped part of the slide reflects changes to the experience, which will now include a "full sensory immersive ride experience including an all-new special effects show, pulse-pounding music and dynamic lighting effects.  Riders plunge down 864 feet of fully enclosed twisting tube at speeds of 20 feet per second on this iconic attraction with vibrant new enhancements.  With a variety of light shows, each ride could be different than the last."

Aquatica Orlando will be renovating one of its most popular slides, Dolphin Plunge, and debuting it as Reef Plunge in March of 2022.  The new version of the duel body slides will feature "eye-catching translucent cutouts and rings" as riders slide down 330 and through a dynamic animal habitat.  The new habitat will feature commerson's dolphins, leopard sharks, sardines and a "variety of other cold-water fish."

Aquatica Orlando is making other improvement in addition of Reef Plunge, including "the addition of over 1,000 loungers and beach chairs with increased shade for comfort and two food and beverage additions: a quick-service pizza place and a brand-new beach bar in addition to upgrades to the popular Banana Beach Cookout.  Multiple attractions will also receive upgrades, including enhancements to several water slides."

Aquatica San Antonio, located next door to SeaWorld San Antonio, will debut a new slide tower named Riptide Race in 2022.  The attraction looks similar to, or clone of, the slide tower of the same name that opened at Aquatica Orlando this year.  The tower features two separate tube slides that run right next to each other, with open cutout sections that show who's winning the race to the finish.

Riptide Race will start atop a 51 foot tower, and each raft can seat two sliders at a time.  There are both enclosed and open sections during the 565 feet of slide.  The water ride will be the first of its kind in the San Antonio market and is expected to open in March of 2022.

Finally, Adventure Island, located near Busch Gardens Tampa, will debut two new attractions and other renovations in 2022.  Up first is Rapids Racer, which looks like it's the same dueling waterslide addition going into Aquatica San Antonio.  It looks to have a different color scheme, though!  The park will also renovate their family raft ride, similar to Water Country USA, to create Wahoo! Remix.  The new slide will feature "synchronized light and sound elements," making formerly dark tunnels "glow and groove" as rafts pass through them.

Adventure Island will also built the Hang Ten Tiki Bar next year, offering up plenty of adult beverages to park goers.  The water park is also now staying open year round with heated pools.

Aquatica Orlando Announces New Riptide Race Dueling Slides for 2020

Aquatica Orlando has announced the addition of Riptide Race for the park's 2020 season.  The new slide tower will stand 68 feet tall and be "Florida's first-ever dueling water slide," according to the park's press release.

Riders will grab a raft that seats two people and head to the top of the tower.  The attraction has two separate paths that allow for side-by-side racing at "top speeds."  The ride's path will feature low walls which will "ensure full view of the competition" as the sliders race through a combined total of nearly 650 feet of slide.  Riptide Race's path will feature both enclosed and open sections, tight turns and section of acceleration.

“Riptide Race will offer a ride experience you won’t be able to get anywhere else in Florida. Aquatica will be the first waterpark in the state to have a thrilling, and more importantly, dueling water slide,” said David Heaton, Aquatica Orlando vice president. “Riptide Race is the perfect addition to our attraction portfolio, complementing what is already one of the most family friendly waterslide lineups in Orlando.”

Riptide Race will have a height requirement of 42 inches to appeal to families with children, and the new slide will be conveniently located on the north side of the park next to Banana Beach Cook Out.

Aquatica Orlando's New Slide - KareKare Curl - Opens April 12th

A thrilling new water slide named KareKare Curl will be holding its grand opening at Aquatica Orlando on April 12th, the park has announced.

Although a curious water slide name at first, KareKare means "waves" in the Maori language, so upon a bit more thought it makes perfect sense when paired with curl.  The new slide features a giant curled shape wall that riders will be sliding on during the adventure.

Also called a "wave wall," sliders will encounter the dramatic finish to the slide after they meander through a colorful enclosed section of the slide.  Then will fly down a steep drop and into the curled wall section, giving a brief moment of weightlessness as they come to a stop and slide back down to finish their run.  The above concept art from the park gives an idea of how the finished product will look.

Aquatica Orlando is also advertising themselves as the "thrill leader among Florida" water parks, noting that they have "more high thrill riders than any other" water park.  The addition of KareKare Curl come just one season after Aquatica Orlando opened Ray Rush, which was voted the world's best new water ride in a nationwide poll.

Aquatica Orlando's Ray Rush Slide to Open May 12th

Aquatica Orlando, located near SeaWorld Orlando, has announced that its new family water slide, Ray Rush, will open to visitors on May 12th.  The innovative new water slide features a three-in-one combination of exciting elements that make it unlike any slide in the area.

Ray Rush shares a slide tower with Walhalla Wave, another family raft ride at Aquatica Orlando.  As guests approach the tower they will see this colorful new signage, helping them know which way to head for the journey of their choice.

Ray Rush starts at nearly 60 feet above the park, and utilizes rafts that seat up to four passengers.  It has a 42 inch height requirement, which will allow younger visitors to ride with their family.

One of the most interesting parts of Ray Rush is the start, which features a small uphill master blaster section, seen above.  Instead of starting with a drop, the ride will blast rafts out of the loading area and into the first enclosed tunnel.  The rafts then enter a giant sphere, then plunge down a drop into a halfpipe that resembles a Manta ray.  A couple more turns and splashes bring the rafts to the end of the thrilling ride.

Aquatica San Antonio's New Slide - Taumata Racer - Opens March 10th

Aquatica San Antonio has announced that their brand new mat racing water slide, named Taumata Racer, will open to the public this Saturday, March 10th - just in time for a sunny spring break in Texas.

The new attraction joins the growing roster of fun available at Aquatica San Antonio, which is located just next to SeaWorld San Antonio.  Known for their competitive nature, mat racing slides like Taumata Racer feature multiple slide lanes, in this case six, where visitors race each other toward the bottom.

“Taumata Racer will be one of the fastest waterslides in Texas, combining competitive racing with the adrenaline rush of speeding downhill head first,” said Aquatica Vice President Byron Surrett. “It’s a thrilling experience that families and friends can enjoy together and gives our guests another fun way to beat the Texas heat.”

Riders will begin by moving head first down a steep drop, then the slides will curve through a 180 degree helix which is fully enclosed.  At the end of the tunnels, each path lines up as riders finish the rest of the 375 foot adventure via a series of drops downward.  The slide experience only takes about 10 seconds to complete, as it is a high speed race to the finish line each trip.

Ahead of the grand opening of Taumata Racer, Aquatica San Antonio has been testing the slide with employees - video of this can be seen above.  The ride's orange, lime green and pink paths are sure to fit in well with the other brightly colored attractions at the park.  The new slide has been manufactured by WhiteWater West Industries, and has a 42 inch height requirement.

Ray Rush Coming Together at Aquatica Orlando

Aquatica Orlando is hard at work on a major new family water slide, named Ray Rush, which will be opening this summer.  The park has made some significant progress on the new slide in recent weeks, with pieces of the attraction now being carefully lifted into place.  Ray Rush will stand more than six stories tall and be highly visible from the park's entrance once it is completed.  The attraction will utilize large rafts that can seat several members of a family at once as they soar through 508 feet of slide.

Ray Rush will have three distinct features for riders to plunge through, and one of them is this gigantic, 12,000 pound fiberglass sphere that the rafts will slide through.  The rafts will slide down into the sphere, then slide up the side of it before evening out and heading outward and onto the next element.  The sphere was just hoisted into place this past week.

The slide will start with a master blaster feature that will send rafts launching out of the gates, after which they will move into the sphere we just saw.  The third large element is this manta-shaped open air half pipe that is currently being constructed.  The rafts will oscillate up and down the side of it before encountering a final enclosed section of twists and turns.

New Ray Rush Waterslide to Premier at Aquatica Orlando in 2018

Today we have another water park attraction announcement, this time at Aquatica Orlando.  A brand new thrilling family raft ride, named Ray Rush, will open at the park in 2018.

The slide is described as combining three different thrilling aspects into one mega-attraction.  The slide will start from 60 feet in the air, where family and friends will board a ray-shaped raft and instantly be propelled at 33 feet per second with water jets into the slide's first fully enclosed section.  It sounds almost a bit like the what can be found on some water coasters, so this is quite an interesting element.

The rafts will then "swirl into a colossal translucent sphere which spins the raft around the slide walls" before moving into another enclosed section.

The final element will be a drop into an "open-air halfpipe that resembles the shape of a manta ray."  One more enclosed section will follow the ray-shaped wall, then a final splash will end the attraction.  All the elements of Ray Rush can be seen in the concept art released today by Aquatica Orlando, seen above.

The attraction will replace the HooRoo Run slide, which was a family raft ride that featured a few small hills on the way down, that slide will close on October 31st.  That means it will share the same slide tower as Walhalla Wave, which will temporarily close while Ray Rush is constructed.

Ray Rush will require only a 42 inch height requirement, allowing many members of the family to slide together.  It is expected to be ready to open for summer, 2018.

SeaWorld Orlando Adding a Variety of New Offerings for 2017 Season

Following up on the addition of the hyper roller coaster Mako, SeaWorld Orlando has announced a wide variety of new offerings for visitors in 2017.  First up is the addition of virtual reality to the park's popular Kraken roller coaster.  The first digitally enhanced coaster for the SeaWorld Parks, Kraken rides will travel far below the depths of the ocean on the attraction.  The journey will include "sea creatures inspired by extinct and legendary animals of the past, including the mighty Kraken."  Saying the ride will have "uniquely designed headsets," the park will incorporate them both mechanically and electronically into the coaster's trains.

Also inside SeaWorld Orlando, major renovations of the park's Dolphin Nursery will delight visitors and make the attraction more interactive.  The park will add "large-scale acrylic windows" to the exhibit so that visitors can see mother and baby dolphins in all new ways.

The Dolphin Nursery will include multiple viewing levels, both above and below the water's surface.  Improvements to the exhibit will also allow easier access for the park's extensive veterinary and animal care teams once the dolphin calves are born.  Educational components, such as digital displays and live educators will help visitors better understand dolphin behavior and conservation efforts to protect the animals.

Another addition will be a new end-of-day spectacle event known as Electric Ocean.  With plenty more details promised to come, the park is describing it as full of "lights and energy, offering guests a different kind of fun after dark."  Inspired by bioluminescent lighting in nature, the park will come alive with music and pathway entertainment that will change the atmosphere of the park.

But that's not all, believe it or not.  A new Seven Seas Festival will occur that celebrates food from Asian, Caribbean, South American and Mediterranean areas.  The unique food offerings will also be paired with local and seasonal craft brews.  That fits in perfectly with the park's new for 2017 dining location, the Flamecraft Bar.  It will fit nicely with the nearby existing SeaFire Grill in the waterfront area of the theme park, and offer a spot for a casual drink and a bite to eat.  Finally, the Nautilus Theatre will debut a "new experience" on Memorial Day weekend, running for the summer.  More details about the show's content will be released soon.

Starting this holiday season, and then continuing in 2017 as well, Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer & Friends will become a part of the park's Christmas Celebration.  Already a popular event during the winter months, visitors will now be able to meet Rudolph in several seasonal themed attractions.  Other characters that will be at the park include Clarice, Bumble, the Abominable Snow Monster and Yukon Cornelius.  The 2017 Christmas Celebration is promised to further expand the Rudolph themed fun.

Over at Aquatica, annual pass members will find a brand new Passmember Pavilion just for them that will open for Spring Break.  Featuring concierge service along with complimentary sunscreen, the Pavilion will have a private entrance to Banana Beach, special animals encounters throughout the day and other perks.

Summer Fun Nights Arrive at SeaWorld Orlando + Aquatica

Starting on this Summer, new activities and special events will begin at both SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica Orlando, giving visitors a reason to stay in the parks after the sun goes down.

Summer Nights will begin at SeaWorld Orlando on June 20th, offering nightly festivities.  In addition to in-the-dark thrills on coasters like Manta and Kraken, the park will also offer the Celebrate America Concert Series.  These will take place on Saturdays and Sundays, featuring all-American concerts by a variety of artists in the park's Nautilus Theater.  After the show the party keeps going with special all-American food and happy hours - season pass holders can even receive a free sample of a "tasty brew."

Other shows will keep visitors busy as well, including special performances of the all-new Clyde & Seamore's Sea Lion high which combines laughs with education on the sea lions, walruses and otters in the show.  Shamu's Celebration: Light Up the Night is a "fan-favorite, high-energy" show with original music, colorful backgrounds and even a fireworks finale.

Over at Aquatica, Island Nights presented by Coca-Cola will start on July 3rd.  This beach party, taking place Friday and Saturday nights, will have live DJs, dancing on the beach and a special menu at the Waterstone Grill.

Both new events sounds like a great way to cool off and have some fun this Summer!

Thrilling New Slide Tower Now Open at Aquatica Orlando

The newest thrill slide at Aquatica Orlando is now officially open to the public!  Named Ihu's Breakaway Falls, the slide tower is billed as "the tallest, steepest and only multi-drop tower slide of its kind in Orlando."

The attraction is made up of four separate body slides, three of which start with breakaway boxes where the floor drops out from under riders, plunging them downward into the spiraling course.  The fourth, purple slide, starts with a plunge that is actually steeper than the other three routes, but does not have the floor-dropping start.

It takes 126 steps to get to the top of the nearly 80 foot platform.  After loading into the three breakaway boxes, riders actually face each other and get to watch with anticipation not knowing who will fall first!

The vertical drops stretch almost forty feet downward before pulling up into tight turns and helices.  Riders drop at around 24 feet per second and then race to the run-out splash area.

Aquatica Orlando Tops Off Ihu's Breakaway Falls

Last night Aquatica Orlando added the top to Ihu's Breakaway Falls, completing the structure and making the tower stand the full height of 105 feet.  The roof structure that was added to the slide tower weighs an impressive 53,000 pounds and covers 1,000 square feet.  The roof gives the slide a nice 'complete' look, and should provide some shade for both guests and workers.

As you can see there's still slide pieces to be installed, but the twisted nature of the new slide is already apparent.  Three of the tower's slides will start with a 'breakaway' box that drops the floor out from below rider's feet.  The fourth slide, which you can see on the far left of the above photo, will start from a more traditional laying position.  Ihu's Breakaway Falls will open at Aquatica Orlando on May 9th.

At Aquatica Orlando, Ihu's Breakaway Falls is now standing tall and today received the first of three "breakaway boxes" atop its structure.  Billed as the "tallest, steepest, and only multi-drop tower slide of its kind in the southern United States," Ihu's Breakaway Falls will stand 105 feet tall with the slides reaching above 80 feet.

Once riders are positioned in the three "breakaway boxes" they will be able to watch each other as they are randomly dropped... adding to the anxiety and excitement.

When complete, this is what the slide tower will look like.  There's a 4th slide that does not start with a "breakaway box," but instead utilizes a tradition laying start with a very steep drop following it.  This screen grab is from a recent update video that the park released, embedded below.  Check it out for more views of the attraction, which opens on May 9th.

Aquatica Orlando Releases "Daring" Drop Slide Details

Aquatica Orlando's new attraction, Ihu's Breakaway Falls, will have a grand opening on May 9th, as announced by the park today.  Billed as the "tallest, steepest, and only multi-drop tower slide of its kind in the southern United States," Ihu's Breakaway Falls is sure to attract thrill seekers to the park for its debut.

Standing almost 80 feet tall (105 feet when counting the slide structure and cover), the attraction will consist of four separate high speed slides.  Three of the slides utilize a drop-away floor to start the action, while the other has a more traditional start.

The three riders in the drop-away boxes will be able to watch each other as they are randomly dropped - making the anticipation of the start a part of the fun.  “With four unique slide paths, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls brings a whole new level of thrill to Aquatica Orlando,” said Bryan Nadeau, Aquatica Orlando vice president. “Riders can step into three breakaway boxes or test their bravery on a fourth open slide for a different, but just as thrilling experience. No matter which slide you choose, once you get to the top, the only way down is down.”

To add even more excitement to the premier of the slide, Aquatica Orlando has released several fun facts on the attraction:

• Ihu’s Breakaway Falls features the tallest, steepest, longest and only multi-drop tower slides of their kind in the southern United States.
• At nearly 80 feet tall, Ihu’s Breakaway Falls has the tallest and steepest 360-degree spirals in the southern United States.
• Those who dare to brave Ihu’s Breakaway Falls will experience an almost vertical drop for nearly 40 feet, the steepest in the southern United States.
• Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is the longest water thrill slide of its kind featuring three “breakaway boxes” and four completely different slide paths. Once the floor disappears, riders will drop 20-24 feet per second.
• Ihu’s Breakaway Falls is the only high-speed water thrill slide in the world that propels guests through four, 360-degree spirals.

Aquatica Orlando's New Slide has a Name!

STILL not a full reveal on the dynamics of the tall new water slide opening at Aquatica Orlando next season, but we finally have a name!  Ihu's Breakaway Falls will be an "all-new water thrill slide" that's sure to have visitors lining up as soon as it opens.

Ihu's Breakaway Falls will be Orlando's tallest, steepest and the only "multi-slide" ride of its kind in the market.  The name of the attraction comes "Ihu, Aquatica Orlando’s colorful gecko, who searches for the biggest thrills, steepest hills and the coolest spills in the waterpark."

I suppose we will have to wait a bit longer to see exactly what the slide holds in store of us, but here's the latest teaser that came with the name announcement.

Aquatica San Antonio Going to the Birds in 2014

Aquatica San Antonio, the full water park located adjacent to SeaWorld San Antonio, has announced the addition of a new Aviary for the 2014 season.  The new animal encounter area also comes with a luxurious looking wading pool and a location adjacent to and interacting with the park's lazy river.

Covering an impressive 13,500 square feet of space, the Aviary will be accessible from several different points including from along the path of the lazy river, from a new water park 'shore' area, as well as from the dry side of the park.

The park released this layout of the new addition, which shows off just how it will be situated over the Loggerhead Lane river and the new 'shore' that has been created.  It will be pretty neat to be able to float through the new attraction while on the lazy river!

The Aviary will contain some 300 species of birds that are representative of over 50 different countries.  Aquatica reports that some of the birds in the attraction are considered threatened or endangered, so the preservation of them fits in nicely with the park's conservation theme.

This is a look at how the area appears now, and shows just how well the expansion will fit into the park.  The wading pool features a waterfall entrance into the Aviary, to keep the birds in of course, but looks quite relaxing as well.

Visitors to the Aviary will be able to hand feed birds, and park educators will be available to teach guests about the animals.  It's wonderful to see the park create an addition that not only expands the water offerings of Aquatica, but also incorporates a new animal attraction as well!

The expansion has a targeted opening date of May, 2014 and is planned to be able to remain open to guests even during the off-season when the water park is closed.

A New "Scream Tease" for Aquatica Orlando 2014

They're still only saying that it will be the "tallest water thrill ride of its type in Orlando," but Aquatica has released the above new teaser.

It certainly gives us a big clue about what kind of slide may be coming - the girl in the video is definitely heading down a trap door start to the experience.  Several manufacturers now use this type of launch, so that means it could be a large AquaLoop or perhaps the flatter loop style used by Proslide.

The park promises to release more details on the new attraction soon, but in the meantime encourages everyone to discuss the ride using #nothingtaller.

Aquatica Orlando Teasing Tall New Slide

Saying only that the new slide will stand 105 feet in height, Aquatica Orlando has started teasing their 2014 new addition.

The park points out that they recently did a height test using a balloon, hence the image they released above, to see just how tall a 105 foot slide would appear on the property.  The exact nature of the slide is still a secret, however.

This post of Facebook clarifies the record that will be broken by the slide - just a bit - saying only that "it will be the tallest water thrill ride of its type in Orlando."  There are a lot of really cool looking slides on the market these days, perhaps this could be a trap-door type slide, or perhaps even one that features a loop after the first drop?  Usually really tall water park attractions are body slides, and the Aqua-Loop slides certainly have a lot of marketing potential.

I could be totally wrong, though!  Either way the park plans to do a full reveal sometime in the future so we will have to keep on the lookout.

Weekly Rewind 4.17.10

Six Flags Whitewater has been busy working on their new Wiggles Water World attraction. The park has posted plenty of photos and a video of the work on their website. The 45,000 sq. ft. attraction will feature 5 interactive areas featuring all your favorite Wiggles characters.

Sea World Parks & Entertainment is offering free one day entry to any UK, Irish, or Continental European tourists stranded in Florida due to the flights cancelled by the Icelandic volcanic ash. The offer starts April 17th, and is valid at Sea World Orlando, Aquatica, and Busch Gardens Tampa. Guests may present a valid return airline ticket dated from April 14th to the 17th (or until normal flights resume) to Guest Services at the parks for entry.

Holiday World has released this video of their new water coaster, Wildebeest, doing some test runs. That ride has more air-time than most coasters! Looks like it's going to be an awful lot of fun.



Bad news for anyone looking to ride Battlestar Galactica at Universal Studios Singapore. The coaster has been closed a few weeks now and it looks like it will be a while longer before it reopens. The park is giving no details on what's wrong, only saying that it's a "technical glitch." Rumors are that it was much more serious than a glitch, and involved one of the ride's trains.

Time for another update of the work going on with Cedar Point's new Shoot the Rapids water ride. The park is putting the finishing touches on the attraction, and the webcam shows that the lagoon on the island is now filled with water!

Aquatica has officially opened their new slides, Omaka Rocka, to the public. The Orlando Sentinel has posted a video of a first person trip down the slide, which you can check out here. Seems pretty short, but certainly a fun concept.

We haven't heard much about Shanghai Disneyland since it was announced, but now it seems the land for the development will be turned over by the Government in July. Some 2,000 companies and 300 businesses had to be relocated as part of the plan.

This week's Harry Potter at Universal Orlando media video takes a look at all the filmmakers that were involved in the project. The park is doing a great job keeping us all interested in the mega-expansion at Islands of Adventure.

The last of this year's new Planet Snoopy areas is set to open at Canada's Wonderland on May 2nd. This is also the only version to feature brand new rides in the mix. Check out photos they've posted on their Facebook account.

Six Flags Great America has teamed up with Goodwill to offer buy-one-get-one admission tickets to anyone who brings a bag of gently used clothing for donation. Special "bogo" offers will also be found throughout the park. The offer is valid on opening weekend, April 24th and 25th.

As I expected, Cedar Fair has stepped up their actions against the plan for the 49ers stadium in California's Great America's parking lot. The company actually sued Santa Clara, citing the traffic concerns they have were ignored during the environmental impact report.

Omaka Rocka at Aquatica Complete

Omaka Rocka, Aquatica's new water slides, are now complete and look ready to go, although they are not quite open to the public yet.

Theme Park Rangers took some recent shots of the slides, and they really fit effortlessly into the park. If you did not know better, it'd be easy to think they had be there since the park opened.

The attraction consists of two Proslide Tantrums, which are all the rage right now in the industry. Both slides look like they have some length to them, which is nice considering several of the recent Tantrum slides were very short. Hopefully when they open (looks to be quite soon) we'll get a better look and perhaps some video of the attraction.

Aquatica 2010: Omaka Rocka

Aquatica has now really made their new slides for 2010 official, giving the Orlando Sentinel a detailed peak at their plans.

We previously discussed what they were up to, but now we have some additional facts. Omaka Rocks will consist of two slides, each of which look to be a Proslide Tantrum model. Each of the courses will feature three mini funnels along the way, and the tubes will be semi-transparent so those on the ground can see the two person rafts as they travel down.

The Omaka Rocka is set to debut by March.
