SeaWorld San Diego Opens New Ocean Explorer Themed Area + New Orca Encounter

SeaWorld San Diego has opened an all new themed realm to visitors, named Ocean Explorer.  The new area, tailored toward families and kids, has seen a section of the theme park totally redeveloped to give guests the feeling of exploring the ocean via a deep-sea base.  Several new rides, attractions, educational areas and animal encounters are a part of the overall expansion.

There seems to be a heavier emphasis on rides in this expansion with Ocean Explorer sporting five of them in total.  Seen above is Tentacle Twirl, a dressed up traditional wave swinger - appearing as a giant jellyfish - ride that's perfect for the whole family to ride together.

Ocean Explorer also has three smaller children's rides as well, all themed to undersea creatures or adventures.  Sea Dragon Drop is a mini-free fall bounce ride, kids can ride in a submarine (seen above) on Aqua Scout, and Octarock is one of the popular kids' swing style rides.

The largest new ride in Ocean Explorer is Submarine Quest, which takes passengers along an elevated track throughout the area.  There are interactive elements on the dash of each submarine, providing a bit of a gaming element as the subs travel the course.  There is one small dark-ride section with an encounter with a giant octopus, but the vast majority of the ride is experience outdoors.  The ride is meant for kids, so there should be no expectations of a grand dark-ride style attraction.

There are also several animal habitats in Ocean Explorer, providing interactions with Japanese spider crabs, a Pacific octopus and California moray eels.  Naturally there are both food and beverage options in the land, alone with retail locations.  For a closer look at Ocean Explorer, along with a ride on Submarine Question, check out this story from Inside The Magic.

A brand new experience has also opened at the park, named Orca Encounter this is a replacement for the previous shows that the park held featuring the animals.  Orca Encounter has seen the viewing area totally redone with a giant infinity screen as a back drop, along with rocky tree-lined landscapes and waterfalls.

The new Orca Encounter tells the story of the creatures, described as the "ocean's most powerful predator," from an educational perspective.  Guests are invited to "witness their natural behaviors up close while an expansive infinity screen brings the killer whales' story to life in exciting, immersive detail."  The goal of the show is to teach visitors about the orcas, including their communication tools, family dynamics, importance of play, hunting techniques and more.

The performance has a distinctly different tone than any show done previously, and is expected to roll out to all the SeaWorld parks within a couple years.
