A Blast From The Past - Disney's Big Bang!

For those of us born in the USA, our Independence Day celebration has come and gone. Most of us spent an evening or two of the holiday weekend enjoying a fireworks display, some more elaborate than others.

Thankfully, pyrotechnic displays are not limited to the 4th of July; they pop up on New Year’s Eve, kick off sporting events and often add sparkle to the end of day at an amusement park.

While consensus is that fireworks were invented in China, many medieval countries also have a history of explosive development. But Disney deserves the credit for perfecting the art form. Always on the leading edge, Disneyland began their fireworks way back in 1956, over the years the displays have gotten bigger and more spectacular; Disneyland currently stages 250 fireworks shows a year.

On August 23, 1994, The Walt Disney Company applied a patient and was awarded the rights over a very special precision display of fireworks, US Patents #5.339.741, #5.627.338 and #5.526.750. Over the last half century, Disney has been awarded many other fireworks related patients and considering the results of the explosions, Disney’s iconic 3 ring Mickey, these three have to be the most interesting of the bunch.

So, the next time you are enjoying a precision fireworks display, remember how the development of it all started with a mouse!
