Cedar Fair Says No Thanks to Purchase of Schlitterbahn Kansas City

Back when Cedar Fair purchased two of Schlitterbahn's iconic water parks they also had the right to potentially purchase the remains of Schlitterbahn Kansas City, which sat dormant for the 2019 season, for $6 million.  The company only had so long to decide to make the purchase or not, and that time has now passed with no sale completed.

The local news is reporting that while Cedar Fair has let their option to buy the water park expire, local officials are still hopeful that it can operate as a water park again some day in the future.  Who would be the owner and operator is unclear, however.

The Kansas City water park was set to be the start of a large vacation destination that Schlitterbahn was going to develop, though little more than the water park was ever built.  The park's prior troubles are believed to have led the private Schlitterbahn company to be forced to sell two of their parks in the first place.

Some argued that if Cedar Fair purchased and operated the park it could be a secondary attraction for Worlds of Fun, however they already have a fully developed water park there with Ocean of Fun.  In the end it appears as though Cedar Fair didn't see the value in having two water parks operating so close to one another. 

Cedar Fair Enters Agreement to Purchase Two Texas Schlitterbahn Water Parks

Some exciting (and surprising!) news broke this morning as Cedar Fair announced that it has reached a definitive agreement to purchase two water parks, one with a full resort attached, from Schlitterbahn.

Cedar Fair will spend about $261 million to become the owner of Schlitterbahn Waterpark and Resort in New Braunfels, Texas and Schlitterbahn Waterpark in Galveston, Texas.  The deal also comes with the ability for Cedar Fair to purchase 40 acres of land in Kansas City, Kansas that Schlitterbahn was operating as a water park for an additional $6 million.

The company's press release notes that Cedar Fair believes they will be able to incorporate the parks into their system of parks easily over the course of two or so years.  They see the Texas market as a developing one and are already proud of the fact that Schlitterbahn New Braunfels has been voted the country's best water park for 21 years, and Schlitterbahn Galveston has been ranked the best indoor water park for a decade.

The deal is expected to close in the 2nd quarter of 2019, which means by the end of this month, and the company will take on new long term debt to pay for it.

Cedar Fair states that the two Schlitterbahn parks and the resort had attendance of 1.2 million and revenues of $68 million in 2018.  They hope to get the parks to their overall EBITDA margin of 35% within two years, an important factor for Cedar Fair's overall growth goals over the new few seasons.  At the close of the transaction, Schlitterbahn's 221 rooms will combine with Cedar Fair's existing resort operations to total more than 2,000 rooms, 600 RV sites and two marinas.

The fact that Cedar Fair is purchasing two of Schlitterbahn's water parks is a surprise, but the fact that they were for sale is not.  Schlitterbahn has had some troubles over the past few years, not the least of which was the accident at the Kansas City park, that I won't detail here.  The family-owned company was heavily leveraged on the Kansas development, and now that it has closed it sounds like there was not much of a choice but to sell the remaining parks to pay off that debt before they became bank owned.

Also of note, the Schlitterbahn park and resort in South Padre will remain family owned but will be rebranded to remove the Schlitterbahn name.  A 4th park, Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi, was sold off during a bankruptcy proceeding in 2018 so it ss already technically no longer a part of the chain.  It sounds like both may no longer use the Schlitterbahn name after the 2019 season concludes.

Schlitterbahn has a FAQ up already regarding the sale, available here, which has some interesting tidbits.  They state that "it’s important to know that Cedar Fair values Schlitterbahn’s character and brand promise.  They have committed to not only keeping Schlitterbahn awesome but helping us grow!"  While I have not personally been to a Schlitterbahn water park, it's well known that their attraction roster and operating policies are quite different than Cedar Fair's.   For instance, the FAQ notes that guests will still be able to bring their own food and drink into the parks... at least for the 2019 season.

Schlitterbahn's corporate statement on the transaction, which is really saving them from a heap of trouble, paints the future equally bright for the remaining two branded parks:

Cedar Fair is a dynamic, brand-oriented company.  Under Cedar Fair’s leadership, the Schlitterbahn brand will have an opportunity to grow and expand like the early days when the sky was the limit. While it’s a difficult decision, after several challenging years, we believe that our team, communities, guests, and fans are going to enjoy what lies ahead.  We believe Cedar Fair, with their approach to embracing parks that have a unique footprint, will be a phenomenal owner, and with the talented people that are the Schlitterbahn Family, will take Schlitterbahn Waterparks and Resorts to the next level of world-class family entertainment.

To be clear, I'm not saying that the future of these two water parks is not bright, but I definitely think it will be a lot different than it is now.  And maybe that is a good thing, depends on perspective.  It's interesting that Cedar Fair appears to be set on keeping the Schlitterbahn name in use... and these quotes even hint at possibly growing the name in time.  We will see.

As for the Kansas City property, I fully expect Cedar Fair to purchase it, sit on the land for a number of years, remove the water park attractions, then resell it for other development.  The property is only a 26 mile drive from Worlds of Fun, a well established Cedar Fair park.  I simply cannot see them competing with themselves on that front by continuing to develop the former Schlitterbahn park.

Exciting news though, as it's been a long time since Cedar Fair added parks to the chain!  Will be interesting to watch down the road.

The World's Tallest Waterslide - Verruckt - Now Open!

From early rider reviews, it appears as though the wait for Schlitterbahn Kansas City's Verruckt was well worth it!  The water park opened the ride today, which is officially the tallest water slide in the world, to a crowd of eager riders, or should we day daredevils. 

Seated in rafts of three, complete with car-like seat belts, riders plunge down a 168 foot, 7 inch drop and reach speeds that can approach 60 miles per hour.  The speed depends on the weight of the riders, which must be weighted beforehand.  Each raft must have total rider weight of between 400 and 550 lbs, and each person must be at least 54 inches tall.

After the initial plunge the rafts head up a 22 degree slope to the top of a 55 foot hill, with giant water blasters pushing them up the hill.  A final drop takes rafts to the catch pool.  Verruckt (which means insane in German) lasts only 18 seconds, but those are some rather memorable 18 seconds.

This news report has some great footage of the slide in action, showing just how fast those rafts are moving on that drop.  Even the park is saying that Verruckt is not a family ride, and is intended for thrill seekers only.  The goal of building the slide was to really get Schlitterbahn Kansas City on the map - consider that mission accomplished.  The sheer number of nationwide news stories about the ride today exemplifies that.

While the ride had to be redesigned heavily, costing an extra $1 million, nothing like this had ever been done before so delays were inevitable.  We're just happy that all the issues were resolved and now visitors can really test their courage on Verruckt!

Verruckt Verified as World's Tallest Waterslide

How does careening down a 168 foot, 7 inch tall waterslide sound you?  The thrill seekers out there will certainly answer with a resounding "sounds fun!" but many will have some hesitations about that plunge.

It has been a long wait, but Schlitterbahn Kansas City has finally revealed that the height of Verruckt is the aforementioned 168 feet, 7 inches.  That makes the ride the tallest of its kind in the world, and that has quickly been verified for the park by Guinness Book of World Records.

For those who are not familiar, Verruckt is not a body slide, rather you and three friends ride down that massive drop in a raft.  The speed gained will send the rafts up over a large hill - expected to provide a nice dose of air time for riders.  After the hill there is a run out section that slows the rafts before passengers disembark.

The new slide is still being tested, so a final speed is not yet been determined.  If the testing process goes as planned, the new slide with open at Schlitterbahn Kansas City on May 23rd.

A View From the Top: Verruckt at Schlitterbahn Kansas City

It seems that these helicam movies are all the rage right now - not that I'm complaining!  Schlitterbahn Kansas City just released the one embedded above, which shows off the dizzying heights of Verruckt.  Set to open this coming Summer, it will be the tallest raft water slide in the world.

I think this still from the movie is really telling at just how tall Verruckt is.  Granted the park hasn't released a firm number on that front, but just check out the view from the same level as the launch tower!  Not only is the thought of sliding down a steep drop from that height intimidating, but just imagine climbing up those tiny stairs!

Schlitterbahn Kansas City is definitely going to be on the map next year when this one opens!

New Website + New Details on World's Tallest Water Slide

I don't think I am insane, but perhaps I would be to take on Verruckt at Schlitterbahn Kansas City!  The water park has launched an all new website for their world record smashing water slide, the tallest on the globe.

Verruckt was originally planned to open this past summer, but the crazy size and nature of the ride pushed that back into 2014 - trust me we all want plenty of testing on this one!

Search you will, but no official statistic on just how tall this bad boy is will be found on the new website.  It does give some hints, though, such as the fact that it is taller than Niagara Falls which is 167 feet if wikipedia is correct.  Also taller than the Statue of Liberty toes to torch, which is 152 feet.  The FAQ page also mentions that the large hill after the drop is five stories tall.

This one makes me a bit queasy!  That's one steep plunge, in fact they say it is steeper than "any ski slope."  I have no idea how steep that is, but it looks pretty intimidating either way.  The ride should be ready for when the park opens in May, 2014 - and I would expect to get final details around that time.

Schlitterbahn Kansas City Pushes Verruckt to 2014

Guests wanting to try out the world's tallest water slide will have to wait until 2014 when Schlitterbahn Kansas City finishes up Verruckt.  The park had planned to open the new attraction for Summer 2013, but that never came to be.

This update from MidwestInfoGuide shows the status of the slide on the park's last day of the season, and while a lot of the attraction was completed it was never able to open.  Seen above, the first drop of the slide is in place, but the dispatch area at the top is not attached.  The ride channels on ground level were not finished up either.

The park never revealed the full statistics of Verruckt, having said they were saving them for the ride's opening.  I suppose we will find out just how tall that tower is in 2014!

Schlitterbahn's Verruckt Reaches High Point

Schlitterbahn Kansas City is still working on Verruckt, which will be the world's tallest water slide when completed, even though it is well into the Summer season.  Building something this large takes time, just take a look at the massive structure that has gone up to support the launch tower and first drop! 

The latest batch of photos from MidwestinfoGuide really show off just how massive the support tower for Verruckt is, when you consider this is a water slide, not a roller coaster, things get really intimidating.  The first drop also plunges below ground level, which will add another layer of thrill.

And yes, the park is still keeping the actual height of the ride a secret!

Progress Continues on the World's Tallest Water Slide

I think it is safe to say that we are all anticipating the debut of the world's tallest water slide later this Summer at Schlitterbahn Kansas City.  We still have to wait a bit for it to open, but the construction of the slide, named Verruckt, has made some major progress... like the huge camel back hill seen above!

MidwestInfoGuide has a recent update of photos that show off the slide's current status.  The slide features one huge drop, followed by this large camel back hill.  Then there appears to be a leisurely trip back to the station area. 

There's plenty of other work going on, and as the update shows the supports for the main tower and drop are going in, too.  The size of the main support is staggering when you see how tiny the staircases they are adding appear!

New Hints at Schlitterbahn Kansas City's New Slide?

It has been a while since we first heard that Schlitterbahn Kansas City was going to build a record breaking attraction for the 2013 season.  At that time, which was back in November, the park would only say that it would be the tallest Meg-A-Blaster slide in the world when it opens, but details would have to wait until the attraction opens.

The above teaser video was just released, which only gives us a few more hints in the form of some flashes of images - like this one:

While not a guarantee, one could definitely assume that this may be the ride's layout - an enormous drop into a big air-time hill, then a quick run-out to the finish.  Now just how high that first part may be will be the question we all have to wait to have answered!

There are some construction images in the video, so the ride is probably well underway at the park.  Tomorrow's airing of "Future Scream Machines" on The Travel Channel at 8 o'clock is said to feature the ride as well.  Interesting stuff!

Schlitterbahn Makes Two Exciting Announcements

Our week of surprises continues today with two unprecedented announcements from the chain of Schlitterbahn Waterparks for their Kansas City and South Padre Island, Texas locations.

Up first is the news that Schlitterbahn Kansas City will build the "world's tallest, fastest, and most extreme" Meg-a-Blaster water slide in 2013.

The park is keeping almost all details on the new attraction a secret at this point, saying only that "the new four-person raft Meg-a-Blaster speed-slide combines the best elements of Schlitterbahn’s patented Master Blaster™ technology with the insane drops of a speed slide"

The park is quick to point out that currently the tallest water slide currently is Insano, located at Beach Park in Brazil which stands 134 and a half feet tall and hits speeds of 65.2 miles per hour - both records will be smashed by the Meg-a-Blaster.

“To ensure the record-holding statistics of this new extreme attraction, we are not going to release final height and scope of the project until we are ready to welcome our first guests,” explained Jeff Henry, Schlitterbahn co-owner and award-winning designer of world-class attractions. “This new Meg-a-Blaster speed-slide is going to wow our guests and is going to be a game changer for our industry. Our greatest challenge will be to find thrill seekers brave enough to ride.”

While full details will have to wait until next May, it sounds, the park does promise to reveal a bit here and there as opening day draws closer.

On South Padre Island, Texas, Schlitterbahn has plans to connect their new Beach Resort hotel and indoor water park with their existing Beach water park.  To do so might be easy since the properties are adjacent to each other, but Schlitterbahn has more unique plans in mind.

How about an underground tunnel? The "new water transportation system that will take riders between the existing waterpark and the new resort and indoor waterpark via a series of slides, rivers and conveyors. Guests will board four-person rafts at either of two loading stations—one at the outdoor waterpark and the other at the nearby indoor waterpark—then drop nearly 25 feet into a 380-foot-long underground cavern filled with fog, sound and lighting effects. A conveyor system will then return guests to ground level and their destination."
It appears as though the indoor waterpark and hotel are separated from the outdoor water park by a small road, which leads to a nearby hotel.  I'm guessing the underground tunnel will pass beneath that, connecting the two parks.

During the winter guests may enjoy the heated indoor slides and rivers, and in the Summer with the properties connected they will essentially get two water parks for the price of one.

If there's one thing for sure it is that Schlitterbahn is not afraid of innovation, and for that we are grateful!

Aerial Antics: Schlitterbahn Kansas City II

This is going to be another updated Aerial Antics, checking out some of the more recent developments at Schlitterbahn Kansas City water park.  We took a look at the park from the sky about a year ago, but plenty has changed since then.  Plus, with Google's new 45 degree views we get an even better look than before!

Here is a look at the whole property.  As we can see, the park has been greatly expanded and is much more 'stretched' out than it was previously.  Really the park is to be known as Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, only the village part isn't quite built yet.  Still, this massive expansion just built allows us to see more of how things are planned out for the future, including the river that is slowly being created around the whole property.

Along with a resort there are plans for a riverwalk type area that will feature plenty of shops and restaurants, along with other entertainment.

This is the first section of the park that opened mid-Summer 2009.  It's looking much more filled in now that's it has been used a couple years.  You can also see the park's river boats sitting on the water at the dock, these will eventually provide transportation around the property.  If I remember correctly, they're from Geauga Lake.

And here is the section that is new for 2011/2012.  The expansion pretty much doubles the size of the park, and features a really long new river ride named King Kaw, which stretches over 3,000 feet.  There are also several new slides, smaller rivers, and a surfing simulator.  All the channels are connected such that you ride up a lift in your tube and never have to leave the river!

Finally, there are still plenty of ride parts location around the property that were picked up from the Geauga Lake garage sale.  There's lots of fun to be seen, I look forward to seeing how Schlitterbahn uses all these items in the future:

Aerial Antics: Schlitterbahn Kansas City

Opened in summer 2009, Schlitterbahn Kansas City, also known as Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, was the company's first park outside of Texas.  The first year was known as a preview, and 2010 marked the park's full first year.

When completed the water park will be part of a big resort, featuring lodging facilities, and a Riverwalk area with shopping and more.  Here is a shot of what opened so far:

As you can see, the park is being developed in phases, and has already announced a big expansion for this year that will add 7 new attractions (basically doubling the size of the park).  If you want to get a feel for how much space they have to work with, just zoom out a little:

As you can see there's a lot of land they are working on!  I have a feeling if Schlitterbahn (and the economy in general) really go for it this could be one heck of a destination when complete.

Another fun fact: Schlitterbahn did quite a bit of shopping at the Geauga Lake auction - grabbing as many as 15 rides or attractions from the closed park according to reports.  If you poke around a little you can see a lot of those.

Lots of ride parts!  This looks a bit like the Larger Than Life wet/dry slide structure from Geauga exploded and the bits flew all over.  I'm sure there's other attractions mixed in there, too.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm seeing here, but I know it's ride related!  If anyone knows, fill me in!

I think that looks like Pirate's Flight, and again more rides lying in pieces.  There's even more on the park grounds that I didn't feature here.

Six New Attractions For Schlitterbahn Kansas In 2011

Schlitterbahn Water Park, in Kansas City, Kansas, has announced a large expansion for the park's 2011 operating season.  The expansion will cost several million dollars and will greatly expand the number of slides and amenities the water park offers.

The  park has not released full details of the new attractions, but are giving a general idea of what is to be expected for next year.  A Boogie Bahn surf simulator will be added, along with three water slides, a "record-breaking rapids ride," white water tube chute, and more. 

The park will also beef up its amenities for guests, creating an even better experience for them.  2010 was the first full season for the new park, and attendance exceeded management's expectations.  The water park is the beginning of a much larger Vacation Village development, which will include more water park operations, resorts, and a shopping and dining district.

Weekly Rewind 5.15.10

Sea World San Diego is getting ready to open their new dolphin show, Blue Horizons. Modeled after the show of the same name at Sea World Orlando, the 22 minute presentation is set to open on May 29th.

Worlds of Fun is hard at work stringing lights on, well, everything in certain sections of the park! The new Snoopy's Hot Summer Lights light show is well underway, as seen in these photos. The grand opening is scheduled for June 4th!

Schlitterbahn Kansas City is gearing up to start work on the next phase of the massive resort development - officials plan to break ground on the large Scheels All Sports store that will anchor the Riverwalk shopping and dining area this summer. The economy has slowed the building plans, but it's hoped that the Riverwalk area can open in 2012.

Cedar Fair's corporate roller coaster ride (pun intended) continues - this week Q Investments, the company's largest unit holder, asked that the quarterly distribution be reinstated, starting at 50 cents a unit. And they want it now, just like Veruca Salt. Details on the ongoing issue can be found here.

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk's new Haunted Castle is getting ready to open, and the park has posted some recent pictures of the inside and outside of the dark ride on their Facebook. The spooky New Haunted Castle is scheduled to open May 28th.

Calling all Vampires and Werewolves - and this has nothing to do with Twilight - Coney Island is celebrating the first Full Moon Ride on the Cyclone which will take place on May 27th. If you come in Vampire makeup or do a good werewolf howl you'll even get a $2 discount!

SplashTown at Darien Lake is making quick work of their construction. The park posted some new photos showing that the massive water park addition is coming close to completion. Not all the way there yet, of course, but they've made serious progress.

Cedar Point's new attraction, Shoot the Rapids, won't be shooting any rapids when the park opens this weekend. A problem with the ride's boats has caused a two week delay in its opening. Read more here.

Enjoy riding coasters? Well, Gary Coleman really does too. (and no, this has nothing to do with Diff'rent Strokes!) He has ridden Diamondback at Kings Island 1,900 times as of Friday night. Now that is a hardcore fan.

Daily Spin 7.18.09

Fans of Nut Tree Park, the short-lived family theme park which operated in Vacaville, California from 2006-2008, may take some comfort in knowing that a handful of the park's rides may be resurrected elsewhere within the overall Nut Tree complex. The project's assets were just purchased by a development company called Westrust, and spokespeople for the company have stated that they plan to bring back or relocate some of the park's key elements. Specifically mentioned were the train, carousel, and ice cream pavilion. Read more from The Oakland Tribune.

As the season progresses, more and more rides and attractions are springing back to life at Conneaut Lake Park. Splash City Water Park recently reopened, as did the Bessemer Railway System and Musik Express (which previously had been targeted for removal). If you're planning a visit, be sure to check the park's web site frequently as they continue to update their operating schedule and post new pricing specials.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village in Kansas City opened in "sneak peek" mode this week, affording anxious guests the opportunity to enjoy a limited selection of attractions at a heavily discounted admission price. Attentive Schlitterblog readers received a sneak peek of the sneak peek, as the park posted a special offer which allowed readers to visit one day before the park's official opening day. Schlitterbahn Vacation Village will continue to operate in this limited capacity as their crew puts the finishing touches on this spectacular new water park. Gregory Stanton of Lanham, Maryland has a new credit to his name: Pretzel Coaster Build-Off Champion! The 22-year-old's rendition of Apollo's Chariot won the judges' favor at this inaugural contest, which was held at Busch Gardens Williamsburg on Thursday. The full story, complete with photo gallery, can be found here. One of the judges has also created a photo gallery on Flicker. The contest was so successful that co-sponsors Busch Gardens and Snyder's of Hanover are discussing the possibility of making it an annual event!

In other contest news, Dorney Park's former "Little Laser" finally has a new name. The results are in, and "Steel First" has emerged victorious with 39.5% of the votes. The park is currently working on a logo and they plan to install new signage soon. When they do, you can bet that Mike or I will be there with a camera in hand! Schlitterbahn Kansas City Closer to Opening

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, in Kansas City, Kansas, is moving closer to its grand opening, with an official date set to be released this week.

The new water park is the first phase of a massive project that will include resort amenities as well as a large shopping/dining complex. In the end, a full and unique water park resort will have been created.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village Moves Forward

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village in Kansas City, KS is making some headway in constructing the new waterpark resort's water attractions. CoasterCommunity.com recently took a tour of the construction site and filed this report. It may not look like a lot is complete at this point but most of the time consuming aspects of water park construction are all the concrete pours - much of which is already complete for Vacation Village.

The first phase of the development, which consists mainly of the water park, is scheduled to open sometime in June.

Schlitterbahn KC Attraction Announcement

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, currently under construction in Kansas City, has announced the attraction line up for the new water park, which is slated to open this summer.

The park will open with a wide variety of attractions for the whole family, and the park will feature the Transportainment system so that riders can move to different attractions without leaving their rafts.

For more detailed information on each attraction you can check out the park's official webpage. The rides include a selection of tube slides, a master blaster, a lazy and torrent river, children's area, and plenty more.

Some of these items would have had a full post but because of the volume of news items I'm going to condense into a Daily Spin. Let's go.

Valleyfair has posted some new photos of the park's new wave pool for the 2009 season, Breakers Bay. They also have photos of the other amenities being built for the park's Soak City water park. You can see those on the park's webpage.

Hard Rock Park is having tons of news come out now that a sale is expected today. This article talks with the new operators about how the park wants to keep the Hard Rock name, and lower admission and season pass prices. This one talks about how the park will honor last year's season passes, and wants to focus on adding three or four children's rides to the park along with keeping the big rides consistently operating.

The Disney Parks have unfortunately had to give in to our rough economic times and yesterday announced a new round of layoffs as well as some serious plans to combine many back-office jobs for all the U.S. theme parks. Imagineering will be affected as well - it really doesn't seem like there's any good to report from this one sadly.

A new logo and blog have been announced for Schlitterbahn Vacation Village, a massive water park and resort development in Kansas City, Kansas. Easily one of the largest amusement related projects slated for this year, the resort promises all the latest in water park fun combined with great shopping, dining, and resort hotels.

The next step in Six Flags New England and Six Flags Great Adventure's viral campaign for their coaster makeovers has rolled out - you can visit LexCorp security and play around to discover some new information about the rides!
