Big Ride, Small Budget?
An article which appeared in The Herald today revealed something rather startling about Carowinds' 2010 coaster project: A small price tag. According to the article, Cedar Fair will be shelling out a mere $11 million for the ride they've recently been billing as "record breaking" and "history making". It also revealed that the attraction will be built on the South Carolina side of the park, although that's of little consequence to the matter at hand.
Up to this point, every indication coming out of Carowinds has pointed in the general direction of a hypercoaster, right down to that shiny new B&M track which began showing up on site a couple weeks ago. But $11 million is not exactly a hypercoaster figure--not by a long shot. For the sake of comparison, it cost $22 million to build Diamondback at Kings Island. Terminator Salvation at Magic Mountain and Fahrenheit at Hersheypark hit much closer to the mark, coming in at $10 million and $12.1 million, respectively.
Could it be that this article is simply poorly worded, and that the $11 million figure is actually attached to a future project as opposed to the one we're already anticipating? Or perhaps it is simply the "South Carolina half" of a larger project? Possibly. The entire piece is written in terms of generalities, and you can hardly expect the average news reporter to anticipate the significance that enthusiasts will attach to such juicy little nuggets of information. But if it is, in fact, true, it's beginning to look like whatever Carowinds has up its sleeve is going to blow quite a few enthusiast minds on August 26.
