A Blast From The Past - Stanton Park's Figure 8


Stanton Park, located in Steubenville Ohio opened in 1905 with a merry-go-round and a roller coaster. While the park operated until the late 1940s, the FigureEight coaster closed 1912.


Figure eight was the generic name given to any coaster that had the train running through a figure eight shaped course, then returning to the station. The figure eight, along with the out and back were among the early designs offering thrill seekers a unique, exciting experience.

While most figure eights are long gone, there are still a few of these wonderful old woodies around. The earliest and most famous would be the the oldest operating side coaster in the US, Lakemont Park's Leap-The-Dips But, that's another story
