Holiday World Makes A Big Splash

Wait - before that big splash I want to point out that Holiday World and Splashin' Safari has posted their newly redesigned park map for 2009 on their website. The map is very well done and a gigantic improvement over the previous incarnation. Kudos!

Also, the park had a preview event today for Pilgrims Plunge, Holiday World's new world's tallest water splash ride! There's a great news segment video of the ride in action at this link that you can go check out to see it in action. A splashy good time indeed.

Manta POV

Sea World in Orlando has released the above POV video of their new roller coaster, Manta. Even with the finale removed from the clip the ride still looks like an awful lot of fun.

Shamu has also been twittering lately and just revealed that Manta is going to open for the public for sneak preview on May 5th already at noon! Awesome!

Two Great Tastes that Taste Great Together!

Ladies and gentlemen, the next generation of coaster modeling has arrived. Your medium? Pretzels!

That's right, folks. Snyder's of Hanover and Busch Gardens Williamsburg are challenging you to put aside the traditional media and try your hand at building a world-class thrill machine out of one of America's favorite snack foods. Entries for this unique contest will be accepted through June 15, 2009. The judges will then narrow down the field and invite a select group of prezel coaster building dynamos to compete against each other in the "The Pretzel Coaster Build-Off", which will take place on July 16 at Busch Gardens Williamsburg. The grand prize winner will receive four Worlds of Discovery Platinum Passes and a year's supply of pretzels from Snyder's of Hanover!

This contest has only one real "rule": Your coaster creation must be built completely from Snyder's pretzels and glue. Yes, Snyder's and Snyder's alone! (I can't help but wonder what will happen if the judges detect a pretzel imposter...)

For more details, visit the official contest page. And by all means, if you decide to submit an entry please share it with us too!

Editor's Note: Before you run to the store to ransack the Snyder's pretzel display, be sure to read the Official Rules of this contest. Among other things, apparently it is only open to residents of certain states. The link (which is so well hidden that I never even saw it the day I wrote this post!) can be found in the paragraph above the Submit button.

More Manta!

© Dewayne Bevil / Orlando Sentinel 2009

The Orlando Sentinel's Theme Park Rangers blog has once again come through with some super exclusive photos of Manta at Sea World in Orlando.

The photos show the entrance to the attraction and plenty of details of the ride that I haven't seen before. Probably one of the most anticipated new ride openings of the year, this behind the scenes look may be one of the last before we see photos of the opened ride!

Check them out here.

SkyZip'n at Dollywood

Dollywood gave a local news reporter a preview of their new SkyZip attraction, which you can see video of at this link. The SkyZip is the first multi-zipline attraction at any theme park anywhere.

It looks like it provides riders some totally amazing views while they are on it! The two photos here are screen caps from the video - you really are high above the ground during your trip! The attraction will open in May and costs and additional $40 per person.

I'm usually not a huge fan of additional charge attractions at parks - but in this case the experience is rather unique and one-of-a-kind. I'd love to try it out!

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Cypress Gardens Adventure Park 2006

When I first picked up this brochure, I had to do a double take to make sure that this was indeed Cypress Gardens and not Busch Gardens. The length, style, and format are curiously similar to those of the more recent Busch brochures. Same third party designer? Probably. But although Busch Entertainment Corporation actually did own Cypress Gardens for a good six or so years, that era was ancient history by the time 2006 rolled around.

The year 2006 marked the midway point of Cypress Gardens' brief stint as an amusement park, during which time it was known as "Cypress Gardens Adventure Park". It's no wonder that experiment went awry--Apparently the park would only allow guests to ride the roller coasters if they were wearing Cypress Gardens apparel!! Or maybe that rule only applied to Swamp Thing...This is going to require further investigation.

Cypress Gardens [Adventure Park] celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2006. When "Florida's Original Theme Park" opened in 1936, it consisted of nothing more than a botanical garden. If you'd like to learn even more about this park's history, you are in luck because this deluxe brochure even includes a time line! So if you are a park history junkie as I am, you will definitely want to take note of the various milestones featured at the bottom of each page.

A-HA!!! So my theory is confirmed: No Cypress Gardens garb = no ride for you! (Although apparently each walking park advertisement was permitted to bring one plainclothes guest along for the ride.)

But on a more serious note, it is a shame that Cypress Gardens' newest management team decided to abandon all these wonderful rides. On the one hand you could say that the park is returning to its roots, which is not a bad thing. On the other hand, I see no reason why old and new cannot coexist harmoniously. But at the end of the day it was a business decision, and I can't really fault them for it. Better for the park to survive sans rides and animals than to be overextended and end up shuttered.

Splash Island Water Park, which survived all the recent management changes and is still alive and well, made its debut in 2005. If the name sounds familiar, that's because the Cypress Gardens of 2004-2007 had a cousin up in Valdosta, GA [read: Wild Adventures] which also features a water park by the name of "Splash Island".

And while we're on the subject of names, how come Cypress Gardens can get away with having a water slide by the name of "Voodoo" when a particular park right down the street from me caught the devil for it? I know, I know--It's "Voodoo Plunge" and it's not the same and yada yada yada. But I'm gonna complain anyway!

Did I say "nothing more than a botanical garden" a few pages back? That's the understatement of the century! These lush gardens are Cypress Gardens' trademark, and we should all be grateful that Kent Buescher saved this park from complete annihilation back in 2004 so that this wonderful tradition could be preserved. Note the "southern belle" in the middle of photo, another Cypress Gardens tradition!

Let's put aside the fact that we're all completely freaked out by the kid with the clown face (admit it!) and focus on the granddaddy of all Cypress Gardens' live entertainment: The water skiing shows! This long-running and beloved show is certainly a unique attraction as far as park entertainment goes.

In addition to the rides and the gardens and the entertainment (oh my!), Cypress Gardens also featured a rather elaborate shopping area--Jubilee Junction--complete with specialty shops and even a model train exhibit. This area is notably absent from the current park map, which leads me to believe that it went the way of the dinosaur (not to mention the rides and animals).

Whatever you do, do not look at this 2006 map and then jump over to the Cypress Gardens web site and look at the 2009 map. It will depress you. Unless you are a huge fan of parking lots, in which case you will love the new look. [Yes, that's sarcasm.] It's such a shame too, because the Cypress Gardens of 2006 truly had something for everybody. I guess you could say it was simultaneously the park's greatest asset and its greatest downfall, thus prompting the "downsizing".

What the...Now how did my 2006 Wild Adventures brochure become hopelessly entangled with my 2006 Cypress Gardens brochure? And more importantly, when did Wild Adventures follow suit and adopt that whole "park t-shirts only" policy?!!

Well as it turns out, I'm not crazy. [Hard to believe, I know!] This page really does appear in my Cypress Gardens brochure. I've alluded to it several times already, but during this period both parks were owned by Adventure Parks Group (which, in turn, was owned by Kent Buescher). So why not encourage all those northerners to make a stop at Valdosta on the way home?

Note the reference to Shaka Zulu River Adventure. Once upon a time, Wild Adventures had plans to install a log flume ride which had been relocated from the defunct Miracle Strip Amusement Park. But as we now know from our interview with current Wild Adventures GM Bob Montgomery, this attraction was never built and is no longer on the radar.

Sandwiched between Orlando and Tampa, Cypress Gardens complements Florida's "amusement district" nicely. It may not be an "adventure park" anymore, but its rich history and tradition make it well worth the stop.

Imagineering Field Guide to Disney's Hollywood Studios

That was quick! The next book in the Imagineering Field Guide To... series has already been released, and this time it focuses on Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.

I'm a fan of this series of books, so I can't wait for my copy to arrive. The books always have great fun facts and concept art for the rides and attractions in the parks - they really make for great relaxing reading.

Here's a like to Amazon's page for the new release:

Wet'n'Wild for Phoenix

A new Wet'n'Wild water park will be opening this June in Phoenix, Arizona. I honestly didn't hear of this development before now, but it appears as though the park is adding a ton of new attractions for it's big debut.

The owner of the property, the Australian based Village Roadshow, purchased the park when it was Waterworld Safari Water Park and has spent $30 million to expand the park so it has 30 water slides and plenty of other great water attractions.

All the new slides look great, there is a gallery you can see at this link. All brand new water slide technologies! I look forward to seeing more photos of this park when it opens this summer!

Counting Down to Manta's First Flight

Sea World in Orlando is counting down the days (just about three weeks now) until their new flying coaster, Manta, officially opens to the public.

The park has created a wonderful website for the attraction, which you can access here. They've also started to add all sorts of fun content for viewers to check out, like a new batch of concept art (see the great aerial view above) that we haven't seen before.

Another cool move the park is doing for website visitors is to give away a free electronic photograph of their Manta experience, what sounds like a digital on-ride photograph. All visitors have to do is register and participate in some of the activities offered on the site - many of which are web 2.0 friendly!

A good marketing move indeed!

SEAing Is Believing

So what's Hersheypark been up to over the past nine months? Oh, nothing really. You know, unless you count constructing a 378,000 gallon wave pool and a 1,360 foot lazy river! Child's play, I tell you...

The Boardwalk: The SEAquel, which is slated to make its debut on May 23, will effectively double the number of guests who can frolic among the area's 12 water attractions at any given time. [Read: More places to SEA and be SEAn!] Now personally I prefer to get my thrills on dry land, however I am a huge fan of wordplay so the name alone is enough to tickle my fancy. And even a landlubber such as myself can SEA that The Shore and Intercoastal Waterway will be excellent additions to this relatively new area of Hersheypark.

© 2009 Hersheypark Crazy

If you'd like to SEA how the construction is progressing, check out the video that was recently posted on Hersheypark's Facebook page. One interesting note is that constructions crews have recycled 14,000 tons of concrete and 10,000 tons of rock while working on The SEAquel! And if you'd like to get an even closer look at all that recyclable material, be sure to SEA this thread on Hersheypark Crazy. One of the site administrators had the opportunity to tour the construction site a couple months ago in conjunction with a school project and captured some great shots, such as the one above.

As much as I hated to SEA the park lose Canyon River Rapids, it looks like The SEAquel is shaping up to be a most worthy replacement and--wait...What? I've worn out my welcome with the SEA references? Really? Aw, shucks...I guess I just don't know when to quit sometimes! Can you blame me if I can't wait to SEA the finished product?

The rest of Hersheypark [i.e., sans Boardwalk] opens in just a few short days--May 1. Mark your calendars!

Aerial Antics: Beech Bend Park

Just outside of Bowling Green, Kentucky, you can find a gem of a independent amusement facility, Beech Bend Park. Named for the Beech trees that dot the landscape, the park made a big name for itself in 2006 with a big ride - but that's getting ahead of things.

The park actually dates back to the late 1800s when it served as a picnic park, and rides did not start to show up until the '40s and '50s. The one featured above, the Wild Mouse, is a Zamperla creation that was added in 2005.

Here is the older water park section of the property. It looks small but seems a perfect fit for a park like Beech Bend.

Here is the Looping Star, a Pinfari traveling coaster that the park purchased. I've never been on one of these but their smaller size makes them look like they'd pack a punch.

And here we have the Kentucky Rumbler, the ride that really put the park on the map. A Great Coasters International twister, the ride quickly became a fan favorite after it opened. These type of rides are just so beautiful to look at, too!

Canobie Lake Park Reports

Canobie Lake Park, Salem, NH, opened for the 2009 season this past weekend to some wonderful crowds. The park will be celebrating '09 with new live entertainment, including Mystique, a "cirque style illusion show" which I'm sure guests will love.

According to the local media the park offered a discounted admission program for opening day, and when paired with some high temperatures and great weather, the park saw a large crowd - not the first we've seen at parks this Spring which is wonderful to hear. To see some shots of the park and all the changes they've made, stop by this TRP photo trip report as well.

Prowler!

How wild does a ride on Prowler look?! Worlds of Fun just released this new POV video of the ride and I must say that I really wish that this park was in my travel plans for this summer!

I do want to know!

© 2009 carowindsflyer

Carowinds has taken the next step of teasing park guests about what they are removing the park's log flume for: adding signs and peep holes on the construction fences!

User Carowindsflyer has a huge gallery of shots taken at the park that show the removal of the log flume and the associated work from multiple vantage points. Be sure to go through the whole gallery as construction shots can be found throughout.

The park is officially still mum about the project, all that we know for sure at this point is that it's a new roller coaster.

Wizarding World Under Construction

© 2009 OrlandoRocks.com

Islands of Adventure theme park, part of the greater Universal Orlando Resort is finally making great steps in actual vertical construction of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The new land at the park is seeing new items go up, from the entrance to the area (above) to the structures for the village shops and restaurants on the former location of the Oak Tree Tavern.

OrlandoRocks.com has a recent gallery of photos up that you can check out. After so much time going by seeing only pictures of piles of dirt and the 'big box' building it's great to see so much progress being made!

Park Odds & Ends

Whilst away in Vegas my in box became full of some neat items directly from parks. Let's have a look shall we?

Kings Island is still getting the word out that Diamondback is open by sending out this beautiful photo of the ride. Even with all the coverage we've had from the park over the past 2 weeks I must say: go ride it!

Jack Hanna from Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures is inviting Sesame Place guests on an expedition into the minds and bodies of some of his favorite animal friends! Hanna will be accompanied by some of the world’s most fascinating animals, like a cheetah, Parma wallaby, hyacinth macaw, and many more that will leave guests marveling. On Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10, Sesame Place visitors will have the opportunity to listen and learn from the animal whiz himself with three interactive shows at 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m., and 2:45 p.m. in the Big Bird Theater.

Mr. Hanna will also visit Busch Gardens Tampa Bay in April and May. Hanna will join families for an unforgettable Serengeti Night Safari on April 26, and he will make a special appearance at park sleepovers on April 25 and May 2. These new adventures with Hanna have been added to an already exciting lineup of animal shows and autograph signings that he will host on April 26 and May 3. For more info see BuschGardens.com.

As the most ambitious park enhancement project in Busch Gardens Tampa Bay's 50-year history, Jungala has earned the prestigious Thea Award for Best New Theme Park Land, and has remarkably enhanced the 365-acre adventure park with even more up-close animal interactions, world-class rides and lavish live entertainment.

“The prestigious Thea Awards recognize and honor excellence in the creation of outstanding visitor experiences, attractions, exhibits and places,” said Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) President Nick Farmer of Farmer Attraction Development, Leicester, UK. “The Thea Awards focus international attention on innovation within the Themed Entertainment and Experience Design Industry.”

Congratulations to Busch Gardens for their prestigious award!

Dorney Park 4.25.09 Update

Dorney Park opens for the 2009 season next Saturday! Before that, though, let's take a quick look at the construction of the Good Time Theatre.

Wow, it's bigger than I expected! The park's entrance plaza is just to the right of the structure but out of view in the photo. I didn't think this was a skyline changing addition, but it appears as though it is.

A different angle of the construction. You can see that they put up a steel frame and are now adding the walls to the structure.

This is the pre-fab component of the structure, these big wall pieces are shipped in on trucks so they go up super fast. There's still a lot more to do, but they've made quick progress so far.

Plenty more pictures when the park opens next weekend.

Kings Dominion 2010?

It appears as though Kings Dominion in Virginia is planning a new roller coaster, possibly for as as soon as 2010.

In documents filed with the local planning offices we can see that a new roller coaster is planned, but that's about as much info as we can gather.

The news coincides with some new land clearing that can been seen at the park behind the Anaconda coaster, and also behind Flight of Fear (that area can be seen above). A new plaza for a big coaster sure would fit nice next to Outer Limits... just think Firehawk at Kings Island.

So, what do you guys think the park is going to add? Leave a comment!

Not Quite Ready To Rockit

According to the latest reports, Universal Studios Florida's newest mega attraction, Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit isn't quite ready to open yet. The new roller coaster was expected to open this Spring, but now it's looking like it will be a bit longer - the park now says late spring/early summer.

The PR machine for the ride has not let up though, as the park just released a new video with animations for the coaster in action. It also points out many of the 'world's first' elements the ride features:

"Kids in America" to Debut at Freestyle Music Park

© 2009 DiscoverMyrtleBeach.com

This week Freestyle Music Park unveiled plans for a brand new 17,000-square-foot children's area called "Kids in America". [For you young'uns, "Kids in America" is an '80s song by Kim Wilde!] The new area will replace the former "Banana Splitsville" section of the park and will feature four new rides from Zamperla:
  • Life is a Highway - A convoy ride featuring miniature 18-wheelers

  • Wheels In The Sky - A "magic bike" ride where guests sit in hang glider carts and control the height of their carts by pedaling

  • Fly Like An Eagle - A kite flyer that you ride lying down

  • Get Off Of My Cloud - A tower ride which will take guests high above the park in balloon baskets
A number of existing children's rides and attractions--including a climbing wall, jungle gym, and train ride--will also be incorporated into Kids in America. In conjunction with the new area, the park also announced the creation of the Freestyle Music Park Kid's Foundation. This charitable foundation will provide tickets, park merchandise, and other services for various children's charities throughout the Myrtle Beach area. These developments are all part of the new management team's plan to create a more family friendly environment within the former Hard Rock Park.

One additional bonus "nugget" was revealed at the media event: The park has adopted a new logo (pictured above). It's actually very similar to the previous logo, it just incorporates a guitar pick! Very stylish. For more photos and lots of additional information on all the changes taking place at Freestyle Music Park, check out this thread on DiscoverMyrtleBeach.com.

Idlewild Expands Its Family Friendly Line-up

Idlewild in Ligonier, PA will welcome two new attractions in 2009, both of which are aimed at the younger set but sure to please the entire family. Back in March, Idlewild announced that it will be adding a tea cup ride called "Tea Party" in the Racoon Lagoon section of the park. Racoon Lagoon is a massive children's area covering more than nine acres, and the addition of Tea Party will bring its pint-sized ride tally to 14. Personally I think this particular ride was a great choice, as it will complement the existing collection of rides very nicely.

But wait, there's more!

© 2009 Idlewild & Soak Zone

Just this week, Idlewild announced yet another new attraction for 2009: Safari Hut. As depicted in the artist rendering above, Safari Hut will be a tree-themed play structure. What may not be obvious from this rendering is that it will incorporate an actual Eucalyptus tree trunk! The structure will feature two spiral slides, an observation deck, and a passageway that cuts right through the eight foot wide trunk. Safari Hut will join the many other play structures and attractions that comprise the Jumpin' Jungle area of the park. It's so rare to find ball crawls, rope climbs, and swinging bridges at parks these days, but Jumpin' Jungle has all that and much, much more. Looks like a heck of a lot of fun to this big kid!

Another Thorn in Six Flags' Side

© New Orleans Business / Frank Aymami
As if Mark Shapiro didn't have enough to worry about already, it now appears that the city of New Orleans is preparing to sue Six Flags for their failure to reopen and operate the long lost Six Flags New Orleans property, which has been shuttered since Hurricane Katrina decimated the Gulf Coast back in 2005. This article from Forbes outlines the sequence of events which has taken place this week between Six Flags and the city. Although the two parties have been in talks for quite some time, apparently New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin has decided that enough is enough and he made a trip to New York this week to tell Shapiro as much. City Attorney Penya Moses-Fields has called Six Flags' unwillingness to reopen the park "totally unacceptable", citing various economic factors.

But both parties acknowledge that Six Flags has stayed current on its lease payments for the land, so does the city really have any ground to stand on? I guess it all comes down to the fine print. Mark Shapiro has also pointed out that back in 2007, Six Flags offered to pay the city of New Orleans more than $14 million (essentially the full cost of the lease), waive all of its claims to city-owned land, and turn over the 86 acres owned by Six Flags to the city to do as they pleased with it. Needless to say that offer was rejected, and here we are.

There's no denying that the trail of destruction left by Hurricane Katrina was unfortunate and tragic, and I'm sure there are many people who would love to see Jazzland/Six Flags New Orleans restored to its former glory. But I can't help but think that the bad economy was the straw that broke the camel's back in this case, and Six Flags is now being made a scapegoat. Surely the New Orleans city officials can't possibly be expecting a company teetering on the brink of bankruptcy to revitalize their entire local economy, right? I guess we'll just have to watch this one play out and hope a settlement can be reached that is agreeable to all parties.

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Timber Falls Adventure Park 2004

Prior to 2004, the name "Timber Falls Adventure Golf" did not exactly roll off enthusiasts' tongues. But that all changed in a heartbeat when this quaint little park in the heart of the Wisconsin Dells changed its name to "Timber Falls Adventure Park" and constructed the ride that would back it up: Avalanche.

A roller coaster in the middle of a miniature golf complex? [Well, around it to be exact...] It's not something you see every day, but apparently the powers that be at Timber Falls were looking to distinguish their little park from the dozens of other mini golf outfits that do business in the Dells. And boy did they ever succeed! I've never had the pleasure of riding this S&S Power creation. But based on everything I've read, this baby delivers in both the speed and the airtime departments. One particularly interesting fact about Avalanche is that it runs an unusually short three-car train. I've read that this was done to lessen maintenance expenses and balance out the forces experienced by riders.

This shot serves as a reminder that it really is possible to blend thrilling amusement rides into a highly themed landscape. Timber Falls' roots are in mini golf, and it shows. The park features numerous beautifully themed courses, all of which are included in the cost of an all-day pass. Who knew the Dells had an active volcano??

Because Timber Falls is a small park, they have ample space to feature all of their rides and attractions in every brochure! In addition to Avalanche and all the mini golf you can handle, the park also has a log flume, a Skyscraper, and bumper boats. They're really into marketing their thrills, too. NewEST, tallEST, fastEST, longEST...Never mind that tiny "one of Wisconsin's" phrase that begins the sentence! And how about that "1/4-mile plunge" on the log flume, eh? Waaaaay too intimidating for my blood!! [Okay, not really. I just get a kick out of tactics like this. Humor me.]

Timber Falls Adventure Park is located in the Dells River District, a community which grew up around the one-mile stretch of road commonly referred to as "downtown" Wisconsin Dells. Its prominent location within this tourist mecca, coupled with that flashy wooden roller coaster that runs around its perimeter, ensures that this small but mighty park will continue to pack in the visitors for many years to come.

Waldameer Mega Disk'O First Ride Auction

© 2009 Waldameer and Water World

First ride auctions are quickly becoming a standard operating procedure around the industry, and what a wonderful new tradition it is. Waldameer is among the many parks who have organized such events for their new 2009 attractions, and time is running out to place your bid! The park is auctioning off the inaugural ride on their new Mega Disk'O to the highest bidder, with all proceeds benefiting the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. The auction winner--who presumably will need to round up some friends--will be entitled to all 24 seats on the ride when it takes its first spin on Saturday, May 2.

As an added charitable bonus, Waldameer will be offering rides on its Mega Disk'O to the general public throughout this special event weekend (May 2-3) for $3 per person, $2.50 of which will also be donated to the John Kanzius Cancer Research Foundation. Kudos to the park for doing so much to raise money for a great cause! If you'd like to be among the first to experience Waldameer's new Mega Disk'O, visit the park's web site for details on how to get in on the action.

And while we're on the subject of the Mega Disk'O, be sure to check out more great construction photos on the park's Facebook page!

A Must for Dark Ride Fans

If you are a fan of darkrides like I am, then you probably already know who Bill Tracy is. If not, this is the perfect opportunity to find out!

Laffinthedark.com recently ran an amazing look at the work and life of Mr. Tracy, a true legend in the world of fun houses and dark rides. Many of his creations are now gone, but the memories of them live on to this day due to the unique and creative scares they provided.

Make sure you budget some free time and check out the article.

Scott & Carol Present: Diamondback - Coiled And Ready To Sink Its Fangs Into You!

Friday April 17, 2009 was a public relations manager’s dream. Not only did he have a tremendously exciting new ride to debut, the weather was perfect. With temperatures in the 70s, and a sky bluer than blond-haired girl’s eyes, Don Helbig of Kings Island was on a roll. A line of special Cinci-metro buses were lined up in the parking lot. TV trucks were parked everywhere and lots of excited coaster enthusiasts who were clapping every time the train returned to the station. It was a perfect storm of positive things to come.

Shortly after 11:00, Mr. Helbig opened the festivities, introducing Greg Scheid, the Vice President and General Manager of Kings Island.

Mr. Scheid thanked all the companies involved in the project. Greg talked about how they had been looking forward to having a steel hyper coaster since the Cedar Fair purchase of the park back in 2006. And then it was time for a special presentation. Kings Island had offered the Inaugural Ride seats up for a charity auction with the beneficiary being the A Kid Again foundation. The two organizations have a long partnership history with the park hosting 3,800 kids in 2008 alone, providing free admission, $10.00 in spending money, and a fried chicken picnic.

Greg gave Jeffrey Vaughan, a member of the Cincinnati Advisory Board who runs the foundation a check for $102,000 from the proceeds of the auction. He also said that "Don kept calling, telling me that the auction was up to $50,000, then $75,000, $90,000, and then finally $100,000. I couldn’t believe it." Just to detail the significance of the event, that represents 35% of their cash operating budget for one year. If you would like to find out more about the foundation, here is a link to their website: http://www.akidagain.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cincin_chp If you choose to make a contribution, tell them it was NewsPlusNotes who sent you there.

Fast-forwarding to Saturday for a brief moment, below is the train full of happy "first riders" who were responsible for making this auction such a huge success!

After the presentation and thank you, it was time to officially open Diamondback, with Mr. Scheid and Walter Bolliger more than happy to do the honors.

When asked about his favorite key components of the ride, Walter Bolliger couldn’t restrain himself to just one. Walter said, "The setting of the coaster (station in the center of the Park, the wooded and hilly area, the interaction with other rides, and the pond for the water brakes) contributed to make Diamondback an extraordinary ride." One thing is for sure, if you ride the train, Crypt, Beast, or just stroll through Rivertown, you senses will be heightened by this ride. Weaving through the park above the midways and through the trees, there is something for everyone to like about Diamondback.

A relatively unknown fact is that the entire project came in under budget which allowed the Snake Pit observation area to be added, "plussing" the project. Guests who choose not to ride have an attractive area to watch their companions dodge the strike of Diamondback. In the middle of the plaza, both the entrance and exit of the ride are surrounded by tables, chairs, and shady umbrellas for the comfort of guests. They even have a refreshment island conveniently located in the center of the area. The hated blacktop has been replaced by pavers making Rivertown much more warm and inviting.

But enough about the area, how is the ride? Diamondback is an airtime monster. The ten drops deliver it with raucous abandon. From the first drop of 215 feet to the dramatic final drop into the splashdown, it seems that that after the lift hill you’re spending as much time floating above the seat as you are on it. The angle of the first drop increases as the train accelerates and pushes you forward into the restraint.

The 2 + 2 seating arrangement makes every seat feel like an outside seat as you roar through the heretofore untouched wilderness of western Beastwood. The supports in the woods are painted tan to blend in with the trees to make the burgundy track appear to float through the trees. As they rise above the midway, they are painted yellow to contrast with the sky.

The creative minds at Bolliger and Mabillard incorporated some new twists into their latest design. Due to the increased length of the train the profiles of the hill was modified to up the airtime potential. Lots of floater air in the front, and it gets more powerful the closer you sit towards the rear of the train.

The midcourse brake takes the edge off before you enter the twisty smaller helix but the negative G’s still are strong as the train sets up for the splashdown. You might feel a little mist in the backseat but you can stick your arm out and direct some of the splash towards you on a hot day.

Jess and Kathy Novak from Taylor, Michigan were fans. Both members of American Coaster Enthusiasts, Jess could almost be called a B & M groupie, since he has contacted the company and asked if it was okay to put their logo on shirts. "Go ahead", they told him back in 1997 or 98 and he proudly wore one to the Media Day. It seemed like he wore one every time we saw him at the park through the years and he mentioned how badly the parked need a coaster from this company to every park employee he met during his frequent visits. Living close to Detroit, he made surprisingly frequent visits to Kings Island. And now he expects them to increase. "This coaster has changed the skyline of Kings Island. The level of engineering that B & M put into a ride can deliver an instant classic. I anticipate lots of rides over the next few years."

Rich and Brenda Gardner from Indianapolis, Indiana belong to three different amusement related clubs. They are members of American Coaster Enthusiasts, Great Ohio Coaster Club, and the National Amusement Park Historical Association. According to Rich, "The most intense moment of airtime is the drop off the midcourse brake but the dive into the water is almost as good." Brenda says, "I look forward to riding it at night. Out through the trees on a moonless night will be fantastic." Interstate 74 between Indianapolis and Cincinnati will be full of these and other Hoosiers eager to experience Diamondback.

As you approach the park from the north on Interstate 71, you can see Diamondback rise above the trees from miles away. This ride has certainly enhance the skyline of the park as the trains are easily followed from Kings Island Drive as they rise and fall between the trees.

Parts of it are visible from everywhere in the park, drawing thrill seekers nearer from all directions. The Eiffel Tower will probably see a lot more guests this season. On opening day the auction winners began riding at 8:00, by which time the cars were lined up outside the parking toll booths onto the highway. And the parking lot had been open since 6:00 am.

The line for the season pass holders preview time reached halfway through the park, approaching the Eiffel Tower But looks can be deceiving. Diamondback has a healthy appetite, swallowing riders in thirty-two person gulps every 100 seconds. And this was on the first day of operations.

For Jess Novak and the tens of thousands of Kings Island fans, Diamondback was well worth the wait. It is a magnificent addition for the park and is sure to bring smiles, laughter and screams to guests for many years. Out thanks to the kind folks at Kings Island!

See you line!

Freestyle Music Park Interview

The Coaster Critic has posted a new two-part interview with the President of Freestyle Music Park, Steve Baker.

Part one covers the history of Mr. Baker and how he became involved with the park, while part two focuses on his strategy for getting guests through the gates this summer. Baker has a long history in the amusement park industry so hopefully that skill set will help him in turning the park around.

Part one and part two of the interview have been posted separately, so be sure to check out both.

Celebrating 10 Years of Tremors

© 2009 Silverwood Theme Park
Somebody--or shall I say, something--in Idaho is celebrating a special anniversary this year. Can you guess who it is? Why it's Tremors, of course! Since its debut at Silverwood Theme Park in 1999, this wooden marvel has consistently ranked high among coaster fans. Designed by Custom Coasters International, Tremors' claim to fame is its four underground tunnels, one of which takes careening trains full of riders right through the adjacent gift shop. It's no mystery how this coaster got its name!

In honor of Tremors' 10th anniversary, Silverwood will be offering discounted admission rates on May 2-3. If you purchase a ticket at Silverwood's front gate on either of those days, you will only have to pay $19.99 to enter the park. That's a $21 savings off the regular admission price! For more details, visit Silverwood's web site.

Happy Anniversary, Tremors! May you live to thrill riders for many more decades.

Conneaut Lake Park Poised to Spring Back to Life

Not long ago, the future did not look bright for Conneaut Lake Park. Finding itself mired in debt, the park sat idle for two years. Then--as if to add insult to injury--the park lost its historic ballroom to arson, and the building which formerly housed the park's bowling alley collapsed shortly thereafter. It was beginning to look like it would take a miracle for Conneaut Lake Park to ever reopen. Fortunately, small miracles have been plentiful in recent months and suddenly it has become difficult to stay on top of all the positive news coming out of Conneaut Lake!

In addition to securing a lease agreement which will enable the park to open 90% of its rides for the 2009 season, efforts are also underway to restore the restroom facilities at Camperland, renovate the boat dock spaces on the lake, and completely rebuild the park's historic 650-foot boardwalk. A full line-up of shows, dances, and holiday events is also planned for 2009. The Trustees of Conneaut Lake Park have even launched a new web site, Conneaut Lake Properties, to entice potential developers, investors, and operators to come to the park and grow their respective business segments for the betterment of the entire community.

In another interesting development, last week the Meadville Tribune reported that First Capital Finance Inc.--the same agency which purchased a large chunk of Conneaut Lake Park's debt from Summit Township back in December 2008--is now considering purchasing even more. The park currently owes close to $900,000 to the Conneaut Lake Joint Municipal Authority for unpaid mortgage bills and sewer service charges, and the authority will be accepting bids on that debt until April 29. An attorney for First Capital Finance Inc. has indicated that they are likely to submit a bid, and maintains that the agency has good intentions and seeks only to help save the park. While such actions raise all sorts of red flags, at this point we can only hope that they are sincere.

If the stars continue to align in Conneaut Lake Park's favor, we just may witness one of the most remarkable preservation stories in industry history. If you'd like to take part in making this dream a reality, you can do so by volunteering for one of the upcoming "Spruce Up The Park" events, scheduled for April 25-26 and May 2-3. Detailed information can be found on the park's web site as well as CLP Junction, although the latter may be a safer bet because the park's web site is also under reconstruction right now! More power to them.

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village Moves Forward

© 2009 CoasterCommunity.com

Schlitterbahn Vacation Village in Kansas City, KS is making some headway in constructing the new waterpark resort's water attractions. CoasterCommunity.com recently took a tour of the construction site and filed this report. It may not look like a lot is complete at this point but most of the time consuming aspects of water park construction are all the concrete pours - much of which is already complete for Vacation Village.

The first phase of the development, which consists mainly of the water park, is scheduled to open sometime in June.

Diamondback Photo Feature

After sorting through literally hundreds of photos taken by the NPN team during our trip to Kings Island this past weekend--and that wasn't even all of them!--I've uploaded some of the best to our NPN Facebook page. They wouldn't even fit in a single album, so I had to create two! (And remember, Facebook pages are publicly accessible so you do not need to have a Facebook account to view these photos.)

Most of our photos were taken during the Diamondback Media Day event, but some were also taken on Kings Island's opening day. If you should happen to spy a few empty seats here and there in the Media Day photos, let me assure you that it had nothing to do with this coaster's popularity, as Diamondback is an undeniable crowd pleaser. It's just that Kings Island spoiled us rotten by running all three trains for a good portion of the day! And while an actual diamondback rattler may not be a people eater, the Diamondback slithering around Kings Island certainly is!!

Have I mentioned how much I heart these trains? Seriously, what a fangtastic thematic element! I'd love to take credit for the new adjective, but that's all Kings Island's PR department. The park has done an amazing job of taking the "Diamondback" theme to a whole new level. I must admit that I had trouble refraining from buying one of the big stuffed rattlesnakes in the gift shop!

For more great shots of this steel wonder in action as well as a bunch of shots from the Media Day ceremony itself, be sure to hop on over to Facebook. We will be bringing you even more coverage of this exciting event as the week continues.

Assorted Kings Island Photos

You all knew I took my camera around with me to Kings Island, right? Well Diamondback wasn't the only thing I grabbed some photos of, and to be honest Kings Island is really rather photogenic. Instead of a typical photo trip report I'll just share some selected pics and associated thoughts.

It's amazing what the huge fountains that Kings Island has inside the entrance do for the area compared to those at Kings Dominion which are more subtle. The roar they make is crazy! (in a good way)

This was how we started our day at Kings Island - I love drop towers so this one, aptly called Drop Tower, was a big hit with me. And what a great way to get oriented with the layout of the park when you're up there!

No thanks to riding this one. I've naturally seen many photos of Delirium over the years but just watching it made my stomach afraid.

Firehawk is much more intense than I expected it to be! I've been on flying coasters before so that experience wasn't new, but the intensity the ride provides was!

This is a weird shot but it includes two coasters at the park as well. Flight Deck is pretty zippy for an Arrow Suspended coaster - a nice surprise on the trip. Son of Beast is... well it's a really pretty ride to look at!

I love old Arrow Minetrains, so Adventure Express was a highlight of the park for me. It's hard to photograph because of it's location, so this is the best I got aside from the ride sign. I loved the ride though!

We were able to end our day with some insane Beast rides which were so good I'm still having trouble finding the right words for the rides... but being in the park well past closing afforded some pretty night shots of the fountains, like this one.

More Diamondback coverage should be coming soon from our other wonderful NPN writers while they hold down the fort around here while I'm off to Vegas. The trip is business but hopefully I can get some updates on something amusement related while there!

New Valleyfair Photos

Aerial Antics: Alabama Adventure & Splash Beach

This week we visit Alabama Adventure and Splash Beach water park, located in Bessemer, Alabama. The park opened in 1998 as VisionLand, but eventually filed for bankruptcy and was purchased only to be eventually sold again!

Confusing, I know, but what matters is that both parks are still open and operating so why don't we take a look at some of the sights?

Here we have the entrance area to the property, a main street style start for guests.

This ride, located way up on the side of a hill is Zoomerang. This Boomerang coaster was relocated to the park from Australia - look at the length of that walkway up to the station!

This is the park's rapids ride, aptly titled Wild River Gorge. It opened in 1999 but then closed for a couple years - not opening again until 2001. I love how it borders the side of the woods and has a hidden tunnel in the back.

Interesting look for a Space Shot, right? The park opened a dual Space Shot/Turbo Drop tower but during the park's restructuring the Turbo Drop was given back to the manufacturer and now operates at Lake Compounce! They should maybe get a cap piece for this one?

Rampage. A 1998 CCI built wooden roller coaster. Often compared to Megaphobia in the UK, the ride had some stellar reviews when it opened.

This is Splash Beach. They've added some new attractions to the water park in the past few years, making it much larger than it was at opening. How weird is that walkway under the wave pool that snakes around a straight path?

The park is also adding UpSurge! this summer to the water park, and combing both amusement and water parks into one general ticket after being separate for many years.

Here's a link to the images.

Diamondback's First Strike!

Today was the preview event for Kings Island's new slithering roller coaster, Diamondback. We've got much to cover here at NewsPlusNotes, and to really capture the entire event we'll need some time - but right now we want to cover some of the basics.

What's the most basic way to describe the ride? An air-time monster!

Don Helbig, PR guru for the park, proceeds over the opening festivities.

Greg Scheid, Vice President and General Manager of Kings Island, thanks everyone involved in the building of the massive Diamondback coaster.

Walter Bolliger, of Bolliger and Mabillard, with Mr. Scheid cut the ribbon and officially declare Diamondback open.

A beautiful rendition of the Diamondback logo created in ice was in the Rivertown Inn.

The first riders enter the Diamondback queue line by passing under the ride's entrance sign.

Chris Stoffl (left), NewsPlusNotes Diamondback Media Day contest winner, invited his brother Jerry to attend the event with him. They got in 25 rides on the coaster and declared that the back seat is the best in the house!

One of the Diamondback trains plunging down the ride's first drop with the iconic Eiffel Tower looming in the background.

Can you guess which way the train is going on all these pieces of track? We have to thank the weather gods for the beautiful sky today!

The brown colored supports are painted so to help them blend in with the heavily wooden area the coaster runs through.

A train coming over the ride's 9th hill just before the finale helix and splashdown. Hello airtime!

Diamondback has beautiful trains which include the impressive fangs on the front car and the snake themed front piece.

The 7th drop on the coaster which is located when coming off of the block brakes.

From the middle of the Beast wood, the train turns around and starts its journey back to the station area.

The coaster completes the splashdown finale and sends a huge fan of water into the air. This is a very impressive section of the ride... so impressive in fact that I needed to take video:

NewsPlusNotes would like to thank Don Helbig, Greg Scheid, and the entire Kings Island team for inviting us and our contest winner to the park today.

Stay tuned for more Diamondback coverage coming soon!

The Beast Turns 30

In what will probably be a very Kings Island focused day on NPN let's start off with a look back...

Kings Island amusement park created a Beast, literally, thirty years ago this season when they debuted the world's longest wooden roller coaster.

Unprecedented for its time, the coaster was actually designed by employees of the park. The Cincinnati Enquirer just ran a great piece on the history of the ride including interviews with several individuals directly involved with the design and construction of the ride. It's a great look back at a very important part of the history of coasters!

Quassy's New Entrance Takes Shape

Constructing a new main entrance and ticket booth with the intent of streamlining the admissions process and increasing guest satisfaction is a good thing in and of itself. But Quassy Amusement Park decided to go the extra mile and throw a little nostalgia into the mix. The park's new entrance structure, which is now nearing completion, was designed to resemble Lake Quassapaug Station, the trolley station which serviced the park during its earliest days of operation.

© 2009 Quassy Amusement Park

Looking good! The official sign has yet to be placed on the roof, but these service windows look just about ready to welcome their first guests.

© 2009 Quassy Amusement Park

An accompanying information kiosk, still under construction in this photo, will feature park literature, pricing information, height requirements, and the park's entertainment schedule.

The blueprints for the new entrance were created by Andrew Peklo III of Peklo Design & Joinery P.C., who based his design on vintage postcard images of the original Lake Quassapaug Station. For comparison, below is one of the original renderings. Looks like the construction crew did a beautiful job of bringing this design to life!

© 2009 Quassy Amusement Park

The new structure is located adjacent to the parking lot, whereas the former ticketing area was located within the park near the Grand Carousel. This location, combined with the myriad services the new entrance will offer, should make for a very smooth experience for park guests. And you won't have to wait long to see it in person: Quassy opens for the 2009 season on April 25, just a little over a week from today!

Pilgrims Plunge Charity Ride Auction

For the next week, visitors to eBay will have the opportunity to bid on riding in the front seat of the very first boat launched from the World’s Tallest Water Ride when Holiday World opens for the season on May 2.

The charity auction will raise money for food banks in four states, as part of the park’s “Feeding Families Food Drive,” a two-month effort to collect 200,000 food items for the needy.

“The top five bidders will each win two tickets to opening day, the very first opening-day rides on Pilgrims Plunge, free lunch, plus Pilgrims Plunge beach towels,” says Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari president Will Koch. “And it’s for such a great cause—feeding those in need.”

Another great move by the park! If you want to check out the auction's page on EBay, click here.

Theme Park Attendance 2008

The 2008 Theme Park attendance report is now available. Here is a direct link to the file from the TEA website.

The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida continues to be the most visited theme park in the world with just over 17 million in attendance during 2008.

Also worth noting was that Busch Entertainment's Aquatica ranked as the 4th most attended water park in the U.S. with just under a million visits in it's first year of operation.

Outside the U.S. the most popular park is again Tokyo Disneyland with 14.3 million visits.

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Kennywood 1991

As I sat here studying this Kennywood brochure tonight, I was reminded of the dangers of thinking too hard about ride names in general and coaster names in particular. I mean, "Steel Phantom"? Isn't that kind of an oxymoron? How can "an illusion without material substance" [per my longtime friend dictionary.com] be built out of steel? But fortunately for the "namers", approximately 85% of this coaster did, in fact, disappear into thin air sometime around 2000, thus securing their now apparent brilliance and forethought a rightful place in industry history.

I'm sure there is a small contingent of enthusiasts who preferred the original Steel Phantom to its sorta-replacement Phantom's Revenge, but overall I think we got the better end of the deal by the time it was all said and done. One thing is for certain: Nobody can argue that either incarnation of this ride was/is not unique. Nowhere but Kennywood will you find a hypercoaster so neatly tucked into its hilly terrain. And scaredy-cats beware, for the signature element of this coaster--its diving 225ft [now 228ft] drop into the structure of the neighboring Thunderbolt--is right in your face as you wait in the station, and I daresay it is one of the most intimidating sights you will ever see while waiting in line!

Steel Phantom's uniqueness did not end with its terrain layout. It was the first hypercoaster to feature inversions--Four, to be exact! While this certainly contributed to the ride's draw, most post-ride reactions indicated that this was four too many. A coaster this tall, with this small of a footprint, simply could not calm itself down enough to take those loops at a reasonable speed. As a result, many riders experienced angst in their heads and necks.

I can still remember reading an article in a Harrisburg, PA newspaper shortly after the ride opened which explained how Kennywood was being forced to slow down "the world's fastest roller coaster". Back then we didn't have the luxury of the internet, so that was the first I had heard about this gargantuan steel contraption. I immediately initiated the process of begging my parents to take me to the local travel agency so I could snag this lovely brochure and learn more!

What's wrong with this picture? More specifically, what's wrong with one of these pictures? Seriously, take a closer look. If you've ever ridden Steel Phantom--heck, if you've ever seen a photo of it--you will quickly realize that the coaster labeled "Steel Phantom" in this spread is a poser!!! (As far as I can tell, that's Viper at Six Flags Magic Mountain.) Too funny. Apparently the park felt that the artist's rendering on the brochure cover just didn't do the job!

But enough about the Phantom. Remember this is Kennywood, a park known far and wide for its impressive collection of classic woodies. I'm not sure the whole "Coaster Capital of the World" slogan held any water by 1991, but honestly, who cares? This beloved park has so much to offer that you can't find anywhere else. I especially love the photo of Jack Rabbit in all its double-dipping glory. No "posers" to be found there; that ride is one-of-a-kind!

Is this a scene from the movie Adventureland?? Oh, guess not...Sorry! This 1991 brochure just happens to have an '80s hangover. If you happened to spy the ginormous ark in one of these photos, you may be thinking it goes back even farther than that! But you would be wrong, because that's actually the Noah's Ark funhouse, one of only two such attractions left in the world. Noah's Ark definitely falls into the category of "can't miss", so be sure to get out to Kennywood to check it out if you haven't already.

Daily Spin 4.15.2009

Tokyo Disneyland has officially opened their new attraction, the awesome looking darkride named Monsters Inc. Ride and Go Seek. The $100 million, 4 minute dark ride takes passengers on an amusing trip through the world of Monsters Inc and allows them to use their on-board flashlights to find characters and bring the sets around them to life. I know I say this a lot but I want to go!

Declare bankruptcy and get $3 million? Looks like that's what will happen for Six Flags CEO Mark Shapiro if the company successfully completes a restructuring in or out of bankruptcy court. The "success bonus" comes as part of a renewed employment contract for the CEO that lasts through 2013. With what he's been doing for the company the past few years though - all the good that is, I say enjoy!

Good news for Conneaut Lake Park fans, it looks like "most" of the park's rides will be open this summer. BUT, sadly, the park's classic wooden coaster the Blue Streak will not be ready until 2010 at the earliest. The park's rides sat closed for the '07 and '08 seasons, so even with the closure of the coaster this is a great step forward! Stop by and visit this summer if you can!

Congratulations are in order for one of everyone's favorite parks, Holiday World. The park was the first in the nation to receive certification in the federally-recognized Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) from the Indiana Department of Labor. A commitment to safety is essential at any park and Holiday Worlds clearly shines at it!

Will Wild West World ever reopen? Nothing is certain at this point, aside from the fact that it will not reopen as hoped for this summer. The failed Kansas theme park was purchased out of bankruptcy and planned a reopening, but most of the rides were sold to pay off debts. The future doesn't look too good considering the economy, though.

SFNEonline has another great Bizarro update for those wanting to see more of the scenery and other items that can be found along the track. I'm rather impressed with the makeover that Six Flags New England is giving the ride!

Worlds of Fun is in its final stages of prepping their new wooden coaster, Prowler, for its opening. The trains were recently placed on the track which means that testing should start very soon. There's photos of that located here. Also, the park is having a first rider seat auction for charity as well - feel free to bid for a good reason through here!

This is pretty neat - Six Flags Over Georgia is holding a contest to name one of the monsters in the park's new Monster Mansion ride. The monster that needs a name is the official photographer for the park, and will be featured in the ride. Winner is to receive a 4 pack of season passes to the park and the new ride opens May 16th.

The Flume Is Gone - A Limerick

Carowinds' Log Flume once sat here,
but the park needed the space to be clear,

So they got out the bull dozer,
and ran the thing over,

It's sad but you'll all love it next year!

What's New At Lagoon in '09

What's new at Lagoon Amusement Park, located in Utah, this summer? Well, the Jumping Dragon, of course.

The park recently opened for the season and debuted their new flat ride, made by Zierer, for park guests. The Jumping Dragon "consists of a large, ornately decorated serpent-like figure with 18 carriers imbedded in its undulating body, culminating dramatically in a whipping upward 15 foot tail. As the dragon circles round and round chasing its tail, it leaps up to two meters and travels through a Chinese pagoda that is over 40 feet tall." Think milder Musik Express for this one.

Sounds pretty neat, huh. Want to see photos? There's a great trip report over on Lagoonisfun.com that shows off all the changes at the park this year, and also features plenty of photos of the Jumping Dragon.

The park did an amazing job with theming the ride!

Another Batch of Old Kings Island Photos

Okay don't throw rotten tomatoes or anything at me for this... but I didn't even know that Kings Island once had a skyride let alone seen photos of it!

But now, thanks for KIExtreme.com I do know and I have seen photos. Like the one above, the fansite has added an entire new gallery of classic shots of the the theme park.

Click over here to check those out if you like!

NPN Exclusive: An Interview with Wild Adventures' General Manager

When Herschend Family Entertainment purchased Wild Adventures Theme Park in 2007, they wasted no time in bringing the beleaguered park up to company standards. Since then, the Valdosta park has been bustling with activity and one might speculate that the world has received but a small taste of what HFE has planned for this property. NewsPlusNotes had an opportunity to catch up with Bob Montgomery, Wild Adventures' General Manager, to learn more about how the park has been adapted by the new management team and what lies ahead.

NPN: Wild Adventures and Splash Island Water Park are about to begin their second season under the ownership of Herschend Family Entertainment. Up to this point, how have the local community and the public responded to the management change? Have you noted any significant changes in your attendance or financial figures since the HFE era began?

Bob: From the beginning, the local community has been very supportive of Herschend Family Entertainment and the changes that we have made in the park. The park has grown from a small petting zoo into a regional water and theme park with the support of the surrounding communities and we are very grateful to have their continued support. Park surveys from the guests have been very positive and show marked improvement in all areas of operation.

HFE has made several changes within the park to provide a family friendly adventure for all guests and to create memories worth repeating. These positive changes have attracted both new and returning guests to the park to experience Wild Adventures under HFE ownership. We feel that they are pleased with the changes and that they will return again and again to experience the great thrill rides, roller coasters, water park, exotic animals and more, all at a great value.

NPN: One of the first major changes introduced by HFE was the transition from year-round operation to a more typical park schedule which incorporates a couple months of "off-season" time to be used for maintenance and rehab activities. How has this schedule change affected Wild Adventures' business and operations?

Bob: Moving to a traditional theme park calendar has been a good move for us and a benefit to the guest. We are able to provide a better, stronger entertainment experience when we are open. We can have more shows, more stores and food areas open and provide a better selection. It has also given us an opportunity to do a great job of refurbishing the park while it is closed and make some wonderful park improvements. This year we built an interactive aviary, changed and improved landscaping, added more shade and color, completely revamped the water park and more to enhance the park’s infrastructure.

Interactive animal experiences are an exciting addition to the park. When guests enter the park, they immediately get face-to-face exposure to exotic animals, such as this young serval.

NPN: Wild Adventures began as a petting zoo, and animals continue to be an integral part of the park's identity and offerings. In terms of animal attractions, what sets Wild Adventures apart from other theme parks which feature animals, such as Busch Gardens and SeaWorld?

Bob: Wild Adventures’ many exotic animal interactive experiences make the park different from other theme parks which feature animals. While we still have over 50 rides and attractions in the park, including Splash Island, the Lorikeet Landing exotic bird aviary, guided pony rides, animal meet and greets, interactive animal shows, giraffe feedings and roaming animals set Wild Adventures apart from other parks. We take pride in our park animals and strive to provide more opportunities for guests to interact with exotic animals.

Our animals are a point of differentiation for WA that the guests continue to tell us they enjoy. Especially for families with young children, it makes us very special.

NPN: HFE owns and operates a broad range of attractions. But to my knowledge, they had no prior experience managing a property which specializes in animals. What kinds of challenges did this present for the new management team? Was it a smooth transition?

Bob: The management team here at the park has a broad skill set and is able to adapt to any situation. Managing a property that has animals is something new to HFE and has been a welcomed challenge. We have added two aquariums to our company, at about the same time we acquired Wild Adventures, so we feel we are growing in our expertise and insight into this wonderful aspect of the industry. We also believe it is an area that will continue to gain strength and provide options for future growth.

NPN: As Wild Adventures and Splash Island continue to expand, do you foresee the animal component being de-emphasized in favor of bigger and better rides and water attractions?

Bob: Animals will continue to be a part of Wild Adventures and Splash Island. Guests enjoy interacting with exotic animals, engaging in the animal shows and seeing the animals throughout the park. As the many aspects in the park change and improve, we will change and improve the animal aspects as well. The animal component was part of the founding vision for the park and we intend to protect and enhance that mission in the future.

Our biggest and most thrilling addition to the park…the Wahee Cyclone! Dare to ride this enormous ride where four people can experience it at once! Swishes, splashes, speed, drops, and waves are all a part of this incredible thrill ride.

NPN: Splash Island will welcome a ProSlide Tornado, the Wahee Cyclone, in 2009. Why was this particular ride selected? And as a side note, whatever happened to the originally announced "Bombora" name?

Bob: Splash Island Water Park has many great water rides and elements that interest all kinds of guests. There was a need for a high thrill water ride to accommodate more riders at one time. The Wahee Cyclone accommodates up to four, offering an exhilarating experience for families and friends. It’s a family ride, but also a thrill ride, so we felt it would be enjoyed by a wide variety of ages, too. We like rides that engage groups of riders together. That’s what it’s all about.

Ride names are always challenging, but we finally decided on Wahee Cyclone because we felt it conveyed the water park experience a little better.

NPN: In addition to the Wahee Cyclone, Splash Island is receiving a total facelift this year, complete with new Polynesian theming and updated facilities. What prompted these fantastic upgrades?

Bob: Well, we all know it’s hot in south Georgia and northern Florida in the summer, so the logical place for our guests to be is in the water park. We found the water park was very popular and everyone gravitates there during the peak of the summer. Splash Island Water Park is such a great place for families to relax and enjoy their time together, and we felt that the environment should match that. The tropical elements added to the water park help bring excitement and fun into the park.

NPN: Back in 2006, Wild Adventures announced that it would celebrate its 10th anniversary by adding the "Shaka Zula River Adventure", a log flume ride relocated from the defunct Miracle Strip Amusement Park. However, this plan never came to fruition. Is this project dead in the water (to use a really bad pun), or does HFE plan to reconsider it at some point in the future?

Bob: Currently, it is not in our plans to place that particular ride in the park. However, we see Wild Adventures as a park with a great deal of immediate potential as well as poised for future growth. It is an area where the local population is growing steadily and the economy, even in these challenging times is relatively healthy. We’re committed to investing and growing our business here, and adding some exciting rides and attractions is certainly in the plans.

NPN: Wild Adventures is a veritable showroom for Vekoma roller coasters. Any chance you'll expand that collection to include some other big names in the coming years?

Bob: HFE is always looking into the future to create bigger and better memories for guests at every property. We like to keep our guests in suspense and always on their toes. You will have to stay tuned to see what we may add!

NPN: Kent Buescher, founder of Wild Adventures, introduced the concept of free [with admission] concerts to fill a void in the local market, which lacked legitimate venues for such events. This tradition is still going strong today, with artists such as Keith Urban and Vince Gill scheduled to perform at the park in 2009. How much of a draw are these concerts? Do they attract a primarily local audience, or do folks travel significant distances to visit Wild Adventures on these dates?

Bob: Our park guests embrace the concerts season after season. Many of the star performers we have had at the park have attracted guests from as far as West Palm Beach and Atlanta. We are able to bring great entertainers to the park to perform at a tremendous value to park guests. Wild Adventures likes to focus on entertainment for a great value, and including concerts in park admission is a huge value. Guests enjoy spending time at the park during the day and enjoying a star performance in the evening. It is all about creating an enjoyable environment at a great value.

Saddle Up Pony Rides are a wonderful way for kids to experience something out of the ordinary! Wild Adventures Animal Staff will guide your young cowboy on a pony down a trail.

NPN: Many parks have the equivalent of a "kiddie land" designed especially for younger children, but Wild Adventures takes this concept a step further by offering a summer-long festival called "Kidzpalooza" which features everything from specialty shows to scavenger hunts. How much emphasis does the park place on children's rides and entertainment as compared to "adult-sized" thrill rides?

Bob: Wild Adventures has always been a family friendly park, providing rides, shows, attractions and concerts to guests of all ages. A successful theme park incorporates elements that excite children, teenagers, adults and seniors. We will always strive to maintain a balance between offerings for the young and old, big and small, thrill seekers and the tame.

NPN: Under HFE management, Wild Adventures' annual Christmas Wonderland event was greatly expanded and renamed "Festival of Lights". The popular "Phobia" Halloween event also received significant upgrades and additions for 2008. Were these plans already in the works when HFE purchased the park, or were they a direct result of the new HFE vision? Are there plans to further expand these events in the coming years?

Bob: Prior to HFE, Wild Adventures produced seasonal events, such as Christmas Wonderland and Phobia. We felt that these were events worth continuing at the park and added some HFE charm and sparkle. Especially at Christmas, we found that our guests were still interested in riding rides and having one more traditional visit during the December school break. We adapted to the guests' request for more rides and made sure we had as many operating as possible. In 2009, we plan to open two weeks in December and will focus more on rides and less on the seasonal theme. In all of our decisions, we are listening to the guests' preferences and try to give them what they are asking for.

Another new animal attraction this year, Lorikeet Landing gives guests the opportunity to step into a bird’s paradise. Don’t be startled when a bird flies past you or lands on your shoulder. You can even feed the birds nectar!

NPN: When you look at everything that HFE has accomplished at Wild Adventures and Splash Island, it's hard to believe that the company has owned this property for just a little over a year. How much of the credit goes to HFE upper management, and how much goes to the on-site management team at Wild Adventures? Which entity is primarily responsible for the proposal and development of new rides and attractions?

Bob: One entity does not function without the other. Both HFE’s upper management and the on-site management team at the park share credit for the changes over the last two years. Incorporating the years of theme park experience and the ideas of those on-site and not, has contributed to the path of success the park is on today. The management of the park locally is clearly close to the guest and best able to identify a need, but it is a great advantage to a property this size to have the experience and resources of a capable corporate support team and the history of the many successes in our other properties.

NPN: With regard to Wild Adventures and Splash Island specifically, what are HFE's primary goals and objectives in the coming years?

Bob: To continue to operate a viable, regional theme park, grow the business and create memories worth repeating with every visit! We want to be a core business in Lowndes County and contribute to the health and well being of the economy for decades to come.

NPN: Do you have any additional comments or information you'd like to share with our readers?

Bob: We want to thank all of the families who have supported us during the past 18 months. Without the support of the community, from employees of the park to guests and visitors from all over the region, we would not be successful. So we continue to give thanks to the people who believe in us and hope we can continue to serve them for many years to come.

NewPlusNotes sincerely thanks Bob Montgomery for taking the time to share his thoughts with us. We also would like to extend our warmest thanks to Micha Froehlich, Wild Adventures' Public Relations Coordinator, for coordinating this interview and providing the great photos which accompany it. Wild Adventures surely has a bright future under HFE and its superb new management team, and we look forward to watching this park grow and prosper!

Looks Like A Splashin' Good Time!

Closer and closer we go to the debut of The Count's Splash Castle at Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA. The park just reached a milestone in the construction of the new attraction when they added the gigantic 8 ft. tipping bucket to the top, along with The Count himself!

Here we have the bucket waiting to be lifted into place with the Count smiling at you. That bucket holds 1,000 gallons of water!

And just like counting...1, 2, 3 the bucket is placed on top of The Count's Splash Castle! (you know you love the Sesame Street puns)

The size of the water structure is quite impressive! SCS Interactive has done quite well with constructing the theming elements designed and imagined by Elaine Swanger Designs.

We can't forget The Count himself! Here he is being lifted into his place atop the structure. He'll have a great view of all the families enjoying Sesame Place's new attraction this summer now won't he.

What's That Xploratorium?!

© 2009 AmusementPics.com

Six Flags Great Adventure is hard at work on a new attraction that's being created out of a piece of an old attraction! Confused?

Well, part of the theming from The Chiller coaster- the Observatory as it was - is now being renovated and turned into something called the Xploratorium.

GreatAdventureHistory reports that "it's going to be a fun interactive attraction designed by the designer of the video effects in the Dark Knight's queue." Now I haven't a clue what that means it will exactly be, but I love that Great Adventure is adding something unique, even if it ends up not being anything that exciting afterall. It's thinking outside the box and that's wonderful!

Just another step in the right direction.

Niagara's Fury Video

Remember the huge teaser campaign that took place last year for the Niagara's Fury: The Creation of the Falls attraction?

I always wanted to see video of the attraction but cameras are strictly not allowed in the unique 4-D experience. Luckily, the Discovery Channel featured the attraction in one of their shows about theme parks and thrill rides, and it gives a great backstage look at the ride.

Any readers visit Niagara Falls last summer and check the attraction out? If so please leave a comment!

Recent Disney's California Adventure Photos

We have another batch of reader submitted photos to look at today, this time of the very under construction Paradise Pier section of Disney's California Adventure Theme Park.

Workers at the bottom of the Paradise Lagoon. As you can see, LOTS of work is going on. Compared to even a couple weeks ago, a lot has changed.

The Mickey Mouse ears have been taken down fully and a Paradise Pier sign replaces them on the side of the California Screamin' roller coaster. Work on the Sun/Moon mural near the roller coaster loop is now underway and halfway painted.

Another angle of the construction work going on in the lagoon. I assume that the black surface will be used as the "stage" or platform for all the LED lighting and water cannons. This construction is HUGE! From some sources, the blue boxes underneath the platform are may be air/water tanks for the water pressure.

The platform for the World of Color nightly lagoon show is really massive! But keep in mind that all this will be under water eventually.

A little bit of a closer view of the former Sun Wheel (now Mickey's Fun Wheel). The wheel is now fully painted in a red coat, except for center facing the lagoon side, as that is where they will have a Mickey Mouse face. From what I saw, there is already wire framing for the main outline, as well as for the inside portions of the face.

Thanks to Carteerio from themagical.nl and Randy for submitting the photos and the captions!

Photos From Six Flags New England's Opening Weekend

© 2009 screaminkid2005

Six Flags New England is now open for the season, and there's tons of photo trip reports posted on the SFNE Online forums to prove it!

The one which features the photos above, from user screaminkid2005 is filled with great photos from all over the park. It looks like Bizarro has quite a few props and stuff being built along the track - much more than I expected. There's even fake building facades going up along the track, especially in the area of the ride's turn around.

Lots of other changes and additions (and ride removals, sadly) to be seen as well!

iWant to Ride iSpeed

© 2009 katunandri

iSpeed at Mirabilandia looks awesome. For an Intamin coaster with a fast launch and tall top hat element, the ride really stays very low to the ground after that! I can only imagine how crazy the ride will be because of that.

There's lots more photos from on-site in this thread on TRP.

Dorney Park 4.10.09 Update

NewsPlusNotes reader Randy was able to get some recent photos of the construction of the Good Time Theatre at Dorney Park and also was kind enough to send them in for us to see!

The admissions plaza is now open for season pass processing for those of you who want to beat the crowds. At the far end there we see some construction work going on.

This is the area that has been cleared for the theatre to be built.

Aside from moving a lot of earth, here's the only 'vertical' progress thus far - a rather huge foundation piece that has been poured. You can see the theatre's location relative to the Carousel gift shop as well.

And a closer view of that piece. Hopefully we'll be able to keep updated with more photos as the construction progresses. Thanks again to Randy!

A Disturbing Ride? No Way!

Best known for songs like “Down with the Sickness” and “I’m Alive,” Disturbed is scheduled to perform in Tampa on April 10 and Orlando on April 11.

During the band’s visit to Busch Gardens on Thursday, Disturbed guitarist Dan Donegan and bass player John Moyer experienced SheiKra, North America’s first dive coaster, which sends riders through a breathtaking three-minute journey 200 feet up, then 90 degrees straight down.

Floorless” cars give riders an unobstructed view of the 70 mph rush, and SheiKra was the first dive coaster to incorporate an Immelmann loop (a simultaneous loop and roll), a second, 138-foot vertical drop into an underground tunnel and a water feature finale, all packed into a half-mile of steel track.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is the ultimate family adventure park, featuring an unparalleled combination of animal encounters, live entertainment and world-class thrill rides. As one of the top zoos in North America, Busch Gardens brings you face-to-face with more exotic and endangered animals than any destination outside of Africa.

Sea World San Diego's Quick Queue

Sea World San Diego recently introduced Quick Queue, an extra cost alternative to waiting in the regular line for three of the park's most popular attractions.

Holders of the pass are entitled to express one-time boarding on Shipwreck Rapids, Wild Arctic and Journey To Atlantis. They can also use Quick Queue for a second ride on their choice of one of the three rides. And, as a bonus, guests with a Quick Queue will be granted one-time free admission on the park’s Skytower and Skyride.

The park reports that guest reaction to the program has been very positive. The program's prices and availability will be seasonal.

The Beast's New Entrance

KINGS ISLAND, Ohio – Ronny Salerno, a rides supervisor at Kings Island, looks at the new entrance sign for the Beast roller coaster on Thursday. The Beast, listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest wooden roller coaster in the world at 7,400 feet, celebrates its 30th anniversary season in 2009. Kings Island opens for preview weekends Saturday, April 18. Daily operation begins May 22.

Freestyle Music Park (Hard Rock Park)

Hard Rock Park has been renamed Freestyle Music Park! Details are to be released as we get closer to the park's reopening, but here's the press release they put out this morning:

~~~
FPI MB ENTERTAINMENT LLC TO OPEN FREESTYLE MUSIC PARK MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND - New Name Reflects Renewed Vision and Direction for Former Hard Rock Park in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
April 9, 2009, Myrtle Beach, S.C. - FPI MB Entertainment LLC (FPI MBE) today unveiled the new name for the former Hard Rock Park. "Freestyle Music Park" represents FPI MBE's renewed vision and direction for the Park in 2009 and beyond.
"Freestyle Music Park" is the destination for the celebration of that revolutionary phenomenon rock n' roll but also encompasses other genres of music including country, reggae, beach music, pop, R&B, alternative, Christian, and disco. At Freestyle Music Park, you can indulge your inner "rock star" while enjoying the park's many and excellent rides, shows and other attractions.
In addition, Freestyle Music Park will be the prototype and launching point for the Freestyle Park brand throughout the world. FPI MBE plans to open additional new attractions and entertainment venues in the coming years, under the Freestyle Park banner. Our Myrtle Beach Park will be the first to feature a music theme.
"Choosing 'Freestyle Music' as the name of the Park is a strategic move that we see as a key benefit for the long-term success of the project while broadening its appeal to an infinitely larger number of guests," said Steve Baker, president of FPI MBE. "With Freestyle Music Park, we own the name, leaving us unencumbered by one specific brand. This will allow us, from a partnership perspective, to explore other opportunities and collaborate with national and international brands that will strengthen and extend the 'Freestyle' brand in Myrtle Beach and throughout the rest of the world."
In the weeks ahead, FPI MBE will be announcing several changes to its Freestyle Music Park. Many of the rides, restaurants and areas throughout the Park are being re-themed to better fit into the vision of Freestyle Music Park. Castings are also underway for talent to star in Freestyle Music Park's musical and live stage show acts, which are currently in development and will be announced at a later date.
~~~

Interesting direction, no? Very bold move of the new owners to decide to start a brand with this park - they must have a lot of faith that they can turn things around and make the park a success. I wish them the best!

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Six Flags Over Georgia 1985

It's been a while since I dipped into my '80s brochures, so this week's SBS feature is long overdue! I hesitated to apply the title "Six Flags Over Georgia" to this particular brochure, as that name is never actually used in any of my early SFOG brochures. The name appears in some places as "Six Flags Atlanta", but in most cases they seem to avoid the matter altogether and simply call the park "Six Flags".

This practice may seem quite odd by today's standards, but you have to remember that the opening of SFOG in 1967 signified the beginning of the "chain park" era. Up until that point, no single company operated multiple parks in the United States. So it's no wonder their marketing department was confused--They were sailing uncharted waters! ...Of course, this brochure was printed nearly 20 years after that happened, so you'd think they would have it all figured out by this point!

Mind Bender sure did look drab back in the day, but I would take this color scheme ANY day over the great NASCAR advertising fiasco of 2008. (In case you missed it, Mind Bender's trains were briefly covered from head to toe in horrifyingly tacky promotional material.) Note to Six Flags: ROLLER COASTERS ARE NOT BILLBOARDS! I understand that you've gotta pay your bills and all, but there are some lines that were never meant to be crossed! And to victimize a classic coaster to boot...Shame on you! But as usual, it appears I have gone waaaaaaay off topic, so let's get back to this exceedingly brief walk down memory lane!

Ah, the ever popular Wheelie. It's nice to see a park that's willing to preserve a dying breed such as this, and to know that this classic ride continues to thrill patrons to this day. Too bad the same can't be said for the Freefall. First generation free fall rides seem rather archaic by today's standards, but there was a certain charm about them. Perhaps it was the novelty!

The Great American Scream Machine (not to be confused with its newer, loopier cousin in New Jersey) also makes a cameo appearance in this brochure. It was SFOG's third coaster, and preceded Mind Bender by five years.

Wow, the marketing team was [still] so confused by the whole "chain park" thing that they put their new ride announcement at the END of the brochure instead of on the cover! Could this have been Six Flags' first foray into the Bizarro world?? We may never know... But what we do know (finally) is that SFOG welcomed a Looping Starship in 1985.

In addition to Looney Tunes paraphernalia and miscellaneous other park swag, apparently SFOG also sold gasoline and diesel fuel "at competitive prices". Huh? That's just weird!

And finally, we get a glimpse of how the Six Flags chain of properties was shaping up by the mid-80s. Funny how all of the parks listed in this brochure have specific names with the exception of the park that's actually being advertised! Bizarro fo' sho.

Count's Splash Castle Progress

Sesame Place, in Langhorne, PA, is hard at work on its largest attraction in the park’s 29-year history. Opening Spring 2009, The Count’s Splash Castle is a multi-level interactive waterplay attraction that will stimulate imagination and provide exciting hands-on entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. The attraction spans over 38,000 square feet and features over 90 play elements including a 1,000 gallon eight-foot tipping bucket, multiple water slides, valves, levers, water curtains, bridges, hydro blasters, bubbler jets, bongos, hose jets, water wheels and much more. Sesame Place opens for the 2009 season on May 2, 2009.

How To Make An Entrance

The entrance sign for the new Diamondback roller coaster was installed Tuesday at Kings Island. Diamondback is the tallest and fastest roller coaster at Kings Island. The $22 million ride stands 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74-degree angle. The ride has 10 vertical drops, two helixes and a splashdown ending. Riders will snake their way around 5,282 feet of track at speeds up to 80 miles per hour. Diamondback opens to the public Saturday, April 18.

Cedar Point 2009: Starlight Experience

Cedar Point's new addition for the 2009 season is a newly lighted midway! Odd... I know. But read on and it actually sounds pretty neat.

According to the park's press release, "each night, the Frontier Trail will be transformed into a brilliant canopy of lights and colors that will be themed to the changing of the seasons. Similar to the climate in the Midwest, each display will gently segue into a different season. Accompanied with music, the Starlight Experience will use a diverse mixture of colored lights and displays to decorate and highlight the buildings, trees and structures along the wooded walkway.

It will extend from the bridge across from the Snake River Falls water ride to the tunnel beneath Millennium Force.Besides the seasonal scenes, the Starlight Experience will also use several themed floats that will depict each season. For younger guests, Snoopy and his favorite friends will also be included in the show. Larger-than-life replicas of the PEANUTS characters will be displayed at different locations along the trail.
Using more than one million highly efficient LED lights, the Starlight Experience will be presented every night the park closes at 10 p.m. or later, Saturday, May 23 (Memorial Day weekend) through Sunday, Sept. 6. The new family attraction will cost approximately $1 million to design and install."

This is quite a departure for any Cedar Fair legacy park, and a welcome one at that. I'm pretty sure this is a have-to-see-it-to-get-it type of attraction, so I'm looking forward to basing any real judgement off of the finished product. But it sounds promising!

The Curse of Novgorod

A reader left a comment on my post about April's poll that they were disappointed to see The Curse of Novgorod left off the list. Well, after looking into the ride a little more I see why!

Hansa Park is in Germany, and they've been working on the new coaster for some time now. It's a Gerstlauer custom designed euro-fighter coaster, and at first I thought it would just be similar to other rides of the type, perhaps like Saw at Thorpe Park.

Not that that's a bad thing, because that style of ride is pretty awesome - but what I didn't know is that Hansa Park is really taking the ride to the next level with an incredible amount of theming!

The park has created an entire website devoted to the ride which you can check out here. The amazing images presented here are from that site. A full backstory to fit the high level of theming has been developed as well, although the park does not plan to launch all the special effects and the storyline until the 2010 season.

A solid 50% of the ride takes place indoors either in the dark or in themed sections. Once the special effects are completed next year this coaster is really going to be amazing! There's a preview video of the ride on Hansa Park's main page that's pretty neat, too.

As for the ride itself, it's both launched AND features a vertical lift hill. The ride starts with a Mystery Mine-ish drop out of the station and then hits a launch that sends riders at 62 m.p.h. and completes several elements before climbing a 130+ ft. vertical lift. The 97 degree drop follows that in complete darkness, soon after that riders hit an inversion and then the brakes start to slow things down.

This is the largest part of the outdoor section - it's being called a 'new' element by the park named a "lark's head knot" but I think it looks suspiciously like one of the world's most famous coaster's turnaround, that of Mangnum at Cedar Point.

Still - the ride looks really awesome and I'm pretty excited to see videos of it once it opens. It just started testing so hopefully those will pop up soon!

Six Flags America Off to a Promising Start in 2009

So long off-season, hello on-season! The 2009 trip reports continue to roll in, and today SFAFANS.COM brings us a report from opening weekend at Six Flags America. In recent years, many have come to view this park as a black sheep of the "new Six Flags", thanks to its notoriously high downtime rates and the fact that it has not been a recipient of any blockbuster new rides. But this trip report, combined with a lot of recent news coverage, serves as proof that Six Flags America is turning over a new leaf in 2009.

© 2009 SFAFANS.COM

You may not see a towering new coaster, but what you will see when you visit Six Flags America this year is a cleaner park, faster and friendlier service, improved landscaping, operational rides, nine new live shows, and obvious signs of future development. These changes did not happen by accident, either. Over the past year, Mark Shapiro has scoured every park in the chain and hand-picked the best 10 individuals he could find to head up Six Flags America moving forward. Literally the entire management team has been replaced! As Shapiro stated in a recent interview, "We've committed ourselves to having every ride open, from the first day of the year in Spring Break to the last day. That's a commitment we'll deliver on." No doubt, as the park has also hired 200 additional workers in order to ensure that its 2009 goals will be met.

One notable achievement that speaks to the direction in which the park is headed is the grand reopening of the park's train ride, Capital Railways, which is pictured above. SFAFANS.COM reports that this classic ride looks shiny and new thanks to a fresh coat of paint. But don't take my word for it, check out the rest of their photo trip report and see for yourself! If Six Flags America can maintain this level of quality throughout the season, I think we can expect to see some very exciting developments at this park.

Blue Fire Is Open

© 2009 Lifthill.net

Europa Park had quite the event for the opening of their latest coaster, Blue Fire. Lifthill.net has some great photos from the event (as well as the ride, like above) if you want to check those out. As for the ride itself - all I can say is wow. It looks amazing!

The theming is really well done, the ride's colors are beautiful against it surroundings... and it's a crazy multi looping twisted mess of track!

Aerial Antics: La Ronde

Off to Canada we go, this week in order to check out La Ronde amusement park, located in Quebec. The park was created as part of Expo '67, one of the largest and most successful World's Fair's ever.

The park's assets were purchased by Six Flags in 2001, and they received a long term lease for the land the park sits on. Six Flags has expanded the park since purchasing it, as we'll see today with some of the large coasters they've added. Above is the very pretty entrance gates that were built in 2002.

Here we have Le Vampire and Cobra. Cobra is the green coaster and is an Intamin stand-up ride, relocated to La Ronde from Sweden in 1995. Vampire is a mirror-image Batman clone from B&M.

Here's Goliath, the park's huge new coaster for 2006. The B&M mega coaster stands over 170 ft. tall and stretches over 4,000 ft. long. It's painted in Six Flags' tradition Superman-themed-ride colors... maybe it was going to be themed to that?

The huge wooden coaster above is Le Monstre. Opened in 1985 the twin tracked ride is quite imposing at first glance. Interestingly, the two tracks of the ride do not always run parallel to each other and provide different ride experiences.

Also in the above image we see Le Super Manege - the super ride - which is an old Vekoma looper from the early 80s. In the upper right corner is the Toboggan Nordique, a Zamperla wild mouse coaster that Six Flags added in 2003.

Here is Orbite, an S&S Space Shot tower that was built out over the water to provide some spectacular views, I'm sure. The park's log flume, La Pitoune, is also pictured. It's a classic Arrow Dynamics flume that was opened in '67 as part of the Expo.

Here is a link to the Live Local images as well.

More Park Openings II

Another weekend, and plenty more park openings! The weather has really not been cooperative for park openings thus far though, hopefully it'll get better in the coming weeks!

SFGAm Zone has lots of great photo trip reports from Six Flags Great America's opening day, which was yesterday. Sadly the park closed today due to a winter weather advisory! But still, check out all the photos like the one above of the still under construction Buccaneer Battle.

Six Flags Great Adventure also opened for the 2009 season yesterday, and AmusementPics.com has a very in depth photo report that can be found here. Lots of positive changes were made at this park again this year!

Busch Gardens Williamsburg has already been open for the season, but the park's new Sesame Street Forest of Fun land just opened this past weekend. Coastercrew has plenty of photos from the area's media event. Looks like a lot of fun!

Kings Dominion is also now open for business. It appears as though El Dorado opened for the crowds, but the Americana ferris wheel was not quite ready (see above). Photobucket user Kinginkd posted a massive set of photos taken from this weekend.

Wild Rivers Irvine Lives On!

Wild Rivers is the water park that won't die. But that's a great thing! The park, located in Irvine, CA, originally was set to close forever at the end of the 2007 season, as reported on here at NPN.

Well, they got an extension of their lease with the city and were able to operate this past year. Now they've again received an extended lease, but this time through the end of 2010. That means at least two more summers for the water park.

The land the park sits on is slated to be turned into a housing development, but with the current economy and flatter than flat housing market - well that's not happening any time soon.

The park also celebrated the news by announcing that they will actually add a new attraction this summer, Buccaneer Bay. This will be an interactive play area themed to pirates and should open sometime in June. Great news!

Six Flags America 2010: Thomas Town

Perhaps to compensate for having not too much to advertise as new for this year, Six Flags America has put up signs at the Maryland theme park promoting their new attraction for 2010, Thomas Town.

SFAFans.com has a photo of the signs up in the park, which opens for the season today. News of the new children's section was leaked by Mark Shapiro (I love his enthusiasm!) in a radio interview a few days ago, and is rumored to be located in the area of the former Two Face coaster.

I honestly do love how Shapiro is not afraid to let the cat out of the bag on new rides and attractions for the Six Flags parks really early - it really helps build excitement!

Dorney Park 4.4.09 Update

I've gone the whole winter without doing a Dorney Park update so this has been a long time coming! There's still not much going on at the park as the construction for the new addition at the park is just starting now.

Still, I figured why not go see what's going on since I was in the area. And here we go:

First - here's the area that's being worked on. That's the main entrance on the right - the structure on the left is the now removed outside-the-park 'blue and white stripe tent' - a big structure where people could eat their packed lunches. The big building toward the top center is the park's largest retail facility.

The tent structure is now removed and so is the large planter area between that and the admissions plaza. The park's new Good Time Theatre will be built in this area.

A wide view of the area - the tent came down last year and ground work has just finally started. That pile of stuff in the foreground is mulch - unrelated to the construction.

A slightly higher view of the area. Lots of work going on today, a Saturday, in order to get this thing done. The bulldozers were pushing and carrying dirt all over.

You can see the construction area goes right up against the admissions plaza, which you can see the start of in the right of this photo. The planter here was full of taller trees so I really hope they do a lot of replanting...

If you look close on the left of this one you can see what looks like frames for a concrete pour standing up. I think the park said the building is prefab - so once the foundation is poured it should go up extremely fast!

And down in the parking lot was this pile of trees waiting to go in the ground. Not sure if they're new of the ones that were ripped out from next to the admissions area - either way hopefully they'll all go in around the new Good Time Theatre.

April Poll

Apologies for not adding the new poll until the 3rd of the month - does this time of the year seem to get really busy for you like it does for me?

There's such a wonderful selection of huge new rides going up around the world this year that I thought this month's poll should feature them.

I grabbed five of the big name ones, all of which have also been covered here on NPN so you guys should be familiar!

Check it out in the sidebar!

No More Hard Rock Park

Hard Rock Park is no more - turns out the new owners of the theme park and Hard Rock did not reach and agreement for the continued use of the name.

A new name was not announced, but parks officials said it will be music oriented with an emphasis on Rock'n'Roll. The Led Zeppelin and Eagles coasters will also be renamed.

An announcement with the new name should come within a week. The park's former website, HardRockPark.com now takes visitors to Hard Rock's website.

Tokyo Disneyland Resort's Record Year

Tokyo Disneyland Resort, consisting of the Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea theme parks reported a record amount of attendance during it's recently completed fiscal year. 27.2 million guests visited the parks, up 7.1% from the previous year.

Most of the gains are attributed to special 25th anniversary events and celebrations that were held in honor of Tokyo Disneyland's first quarter century.

Plus both of the parks are totally awesome so that doesn't hurt attendance, either.

March Poll Results

The poll for the month of March asked what everyone's favorite Arrow Dynamics Suspended coaster was - and it really wasn't much of a competition afterall, now was it!

The Big Bad Wolf at Busch Gardens Williamsburg cleaned up with an amazing 55% of the total vote alone.
