Six Flags Discovery Kingdom 2009

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom has announced that for the park's 2009 season their tiger habitat will be expanded and become Odin's Temple of the Tiger.

"Odin's Temple of the Tiger will be housed in the former Jungle Theater and will be redesigned to create a more expansive site for the cats. There will also be additional arena seating for enhanced viewing. A new pool with an underwater viewing window will be the primary focal point of the stage that during off-show hours will provide an outdoor exhibit area for the park's 11 tigers."

Hopefully the area will be as nicely themed as the Temple of the Tiger area at Six Flags Great Adventure. After adding a ride this season, it's also nice to see the park focus on their animal attractions again as well.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!

Daily Spin 10.30.08

The Great Escape theme park (a Six Flags property) had a fire take place at the park on Tuesday. The fire broke out around 9 a.m. in a food warehouse located in the amusement park and caused some serious damage to the structure. TGE Source has collected some photos and information from the fire in this thread.

Can't get enough Diamondback at Kings Island photos? I don't blame you. KIExtreme has a gallery up of shots taken on the walk-back the park did this past weekend. There are some interesting shots in the mix from angles not seen yet.

Back to The Great Escape for a moment, it looks like the first pieces of the park's new attraction for 2009, Sasquatch, have arrived at the park. TGE Source has photos in their forums. The new ride is being moved from Six Flags New Orleans and is an S&S tower ride.

Sea World Orlando's Manta is continuing quick construction of its track and at this point the lift has now been topped off and the drop has started to be built. I love how the lift and drop are really positioned directly over midways. Makes for some great shots, check them out here.

Valleyfair has posted some construction photos of their 2009 attraction on the park's official web page. Work on Breakers Bay, the park's new wave pool, has been underway for some time now. It looks like they'll be ready to pour concrete rather soon...

Oriental Land Co., the entity that owns and operates Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, has announced a new attraction for the DisneySea property in 2009. Visitors to the park will now be able to experience Turtle Talk, an interactive show with Crush from Finding Nemo. The $13 or so million attraction will be located inside the park's S.S. Columbia ship which is docked in the American Waterfront section of the park.

Westcoaster has a new update available for Knott's Berry Farm and the Disneyland Resort. They have photos of the Ghostbuster's car at Knott's and more pics of the Blue Sky Cellar art and models than you can shake a stick at.

Random Dorney Park Haunt Photos

I've got a bit of a backlog of photos from my trips to the Haunt at Dorney Park over the last month or so, so here's a random collection of shots I've taken for various reasons.

The park does have up new banners for the different Haunt attractions. Here are the ones for ScreamWorks and Club Blood.

Also, and you'll have to click the larger photo to see, there are some flags by the entrance to the parking area next to Steel Force's station. For what? I don't know.

The Haunt was a real hit this year. The above photo was taken early on when crowds were less than they are now, and this was the long line to be found for ScreamWorks.

I like this shot. The fog makes everything so creepy - it's great when it's a fairly calm night and the fog just hovers over the entire park.

Big banner that went up at the entrance to the park, which looks like it is floating in space in this photo.

The acts make for some great action shots during General Jack's Sideshow Bizarro.

PG-13.

Boo - this photo is way too dark, but last week or so the park planted all new trees in every planter along the main midway. Great move!

Perhaps it's just me, but it's been quite a while since I've seen Hydra's sign with smoke coming out of it's nose.

We'll end with a photo of Laser. This weekend is the last for the park's 2008 season, and the last ever for Laser!

Gilroy Gardens Extends Cedar Fair Contract

Gilroy Gardens Theme Park has extended their management contract with Cedar Fair for another two years.

This one will be filed in the 'I guessed wrong' drawer - I would have thought that Gilroy Gardens was counting the days until that contract was over - but I was wrong.

The park, which is owner by the city, recently was offered $35 million for the theme park and the surrounding land from a group of foreign investors. Since the theme park is city owned, the public will have a say in what the future holds for the property.

Several reports have stated that the theme park is still struggling in its current form. Cedar Fair manages the park's daily operations and takes care of marketing and other such necessities for a yearly fee.

Prowler Progress

In what is shaping up to be one of the slimest years for new coasters in the U.S. in a while, 2009 does have some bright spots for new coasters - I'd classify Worlds of Fun's Prowler as one of them.

The park has posted even more new shots of the construction of the new wooden coaster. It looks like the bents are up for almost all of the ride's turnaround, with other sections going up at the same time as well.

Here's a link to the photos.

Voodoo Mega Sale

FYI, Dorney Park currently has all their Voodoo merchandise listed at 65% off. If you ever wanted a Voodoo souvenir (it does have an awesome logo, after all) now is the time!

The real question is, why discount merchandise for a brand new ride? I'll let that alone, but get your souvenir cup or whatever now!

Doctor of Doom: The Haunt at Dorney Park

Afraid of clowns? If so, this could be your worst nightmare. A crazy Doctor is on the loose and he's trying to build the world's most evil clown.

Granite Park in Trouble

© The Fresno Bee / Craig Kohlruss

The Forest at Granite Park, a new theme park being developed in Fresno, CA, has hit some bumps in their development road. The park was supposed to have opened this past fall, but judging from the state of things (see above photo) the park has not been built as planned just yet.

The developer now says they are waiting on a financing deal that could go though in November, allowing the park to open in the spring. Many are skeptical.

The park, if it opens, will contain several attractions from the defunct MGM Grand Adventures theme park in Las Vegas.

Whether or not the park ever opens looks like a 'stay tuned' situation at this point, but here's hoping for the best.

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Silverwood Theme Park 2007

In a day and age where new theme parks seem to be dropping off the face of the earth faster than they can open their gates, it's refreshing to see a comparatively young park celebrate a milestone anniversary. Silverwood Theme Park did just that in 2007, when it invited guests to join in the celebration of its 20th season of operation.

The fact that Silverwood is located well off the beaten vacationers' path in Athol, Idaho makes its success that much more impressive. While other parks publicly struggle to maintain their respective positions in the industry from one year to the next, this "sleeper" park has quietly persevered and just continues to get better and better.

Silverwood spared no cost in putting an exclamation point on its 20th season, introducing a massive expansion of its already popular Boulder Beach water park. The newly expanded Boulder Beach is certain to be a huge draw for the park for many years to come.

The inclusion of black and white photos alongside their flashier color counterparts gives this brochure a real nostalgic quality. Who cares if the rides featured in those B&Ws are five, ten, or twenty years old as opposed to one hundred? Every ride deserves a rightful place in history, and every enthusiast loves an old school photo, even if the definition of "old" is subject to interpretation!

Don't let this park's location fool you: It hosts just as many special events as its brethren who occupy the more populous areas of our thrill-crazed nation.

I'd like to extend my own retroactive congratulations to Silverwood for reaching the 20-year mark and thus attaining a feat which unfortunately eludes so many parks. Some day I hope to write about Silverwood's 50th anniversary too!

[As a side note, this particular brochure also contained some "bonus" material in the form of FOUR pages of hotel information! While such info does not make for very interesting blogging, it may be useful to those of you who are planning a trip to Silverwood in the near future. I would be happy to send you these goodies if you so desire. Just shoot me an e-mail and say the magic word!]

Scott And Carol Present: Diamondback Update

Kings Island is taking advantage of the relatively mild weather to speed construction of Diamondback, their new coaster for 2009. Construction appears to ahead of schedule but who knows what winter might bring. The roller coaster is slated to open with the park next spring. Here are a few shots from our visit on 10/25/2008.

No signs off topping off the lift yet, although it should be done soon. Today the workers were attaching to temporary stabilizing cables, possibly due to the impending wind advisory for much of the Midwest. The track is an integral part of the overall structure and the cables will not be required once everything is bolted into place. They will then be removed.

The lift hill is located right outside the station so the experience should be similar to the quick ascent of Millennium Force, located at Cedar Point. The front of the train will be well above the before the last car exits the platform.

The crane required for lifting the pieces protrudes onto the midway in Rivertown. A platform of gravel and railroad tie sized beams forms a level surface for it without destroying the surface of the midway path. The massive weights on the back prevent the crane from tipping forward.

As the leaves have thinned, the growing structure can be seen from more areas of the park. The “field of footers” has already been landscaped and the grass has already started to grow back. By next spring, this area will be unrecognizable. This view will available from both the train and after riding the Crypt.

The dive into the ravine should provide a dramatic airtime moment for Diamondback riders. The close proximity to the ground will serve to enhance the sensation of speed, even though the coaster will hit 80 mph on the course.

A new thing for Kings Island, this coaster will traverse the midway. The only previous attraction to have done this was when Action Theatre’s and Flight of Fear’s pathways were built under the Racer. Many good vantage spots are available for the out and back trip to the woods. The splashdown pool will also be observable from almost every angle once construction is completed.

Riders on the Kings Island & Miami Valley Railroad will also get a close encounter with Diamondback. The train will take a more leisurely pace right under some of the drops.

Keep watching right here for more Diamondback up-dates!

Hong Kong Disneyland on YouTube

Sorry for back to back YouTube videos, but Hong Kong Disneyland made their own channel and it has some great videos from their Halloween event. They have some commercials they did for the event, as well as a video that overviews all the different offerings the park has this year.

And judging from the above video the park has not backed down from being 'undisney' with their seriously scary event!

Disney's Blue Sky Cellar Video

Here is the video that is being played at the Blue Sky Cellar at Disney's California Adventure. It's an overview of the changes coming to the park in the next 5 or so years. I was hoping it would make its way onto YouTube and it has!

To see the concept art and models better I'd suggest clicking the video link and watching it in high resolution.

It Is An Election Year, Anyway

Remember to vote in the poll over there --->

This is October so it's only fair that the two premier Halloween events duke it out for the title of best Haunt.

So are you feeling Universal Orlando's Halloween Horror Nights, or Knott's Berry Farm's Halloween Haunt?

It's currently 49% to 51% with Halloween Haunt on top!

Celebration City Closing Forever

Herschend Family Entertainment has announced that they will be closing the Celebration City theme park for good. The park's last operating day will be tomorrow, Saturday, October 25th.

The cause of the closing is a "shift in business strategy," however the company" is already exploring various new development concepts for the site including an aquarium, other family attractions, re-theming the current park and also, destination retail and dining."

A fair guess is also that economic issues are at play as well, keep in mind that Herschend just postponed Dollywood and Silver Dollar City's (then unannounced) new for 2009 attractions to 2010 due to concerns over the nation's economic status and the cost of materials.

All Photos © Carol Holmes

The nighttime theme park first opened in 2003 in the busy tourist area of Branson, Missouri. Highlight attractions include the Ozark Wildcat, a GCI wooden roller coaster, and the recently added Roaring Falls - the splashdown ride from the now defunct Geauga Lake amusement park. The park features some very nice early 20th Century American theming as well.

No word yet on what will happen to the park's amusement rides.

Daily Spin 10.24.08

Westcoaster has some great new photos of the construction going on at Six Flags Magic Mountain for their new Terminator The Coaster. They are definitely using the 'slab' footer technique for this ride - it looks like the park will have those poured before you know it. Westcoaster also has photos of bents that are already assembled for the ride as well.

ThemeUK's latest photo gallery of Thorpe Park's Saw: The Ride show the coaster's station building growing at a fast rate. With the actual coaster structure already completed, work has been focused on the station area. This building holds the dark ride portion of the coaster, and themed to the Saw movies this area should be quite interesting.

Sesame Place will be holding a special birthday party for Cookie Monster on Sunday November 2nd. Since Cookie Monster really likes healthy veggies nowadays, guests can bring a can of vegetables to the park and receive discounted admission for the day. Best of all, all the food benefits the American Red Cross food programs. Details are on the park's website.

Cheezonastick.net has come up with a catchy idea for this election year: vote online for your 'president' of the industry we love, and they've nominated Six Flags Theme Park's Mark Shapiro for the job. Looks like Dick Kinzel will soon be nominated as well. Check out their site for more.

WorldsofFun.Org has a new blog
(on Blogspot, yay!) and their first post chronicles their recent visit to Worlds of Fun to take a construction tour of Prowler. They have some amazing photos, which for me at least gave me more perspective on how the ride 'fits' in that section of the park. It also helps understand the elevation changes that the ride is going to use.

Sea World Orlando's new Manta roller coaster's lift hill was assembled this week. The Orlando Sentinel has some nice photos from a few days ago, but I think the lift is totally done at this point. It looks like a pretty steep lift, but Tastu had a rather steep one as well.

Geauga Lake Article

WKYC has a small update article on Geauga Lake one year after the ride side closed it's gates forever.

The article also has a small photo gallery showing some recent shots of the park. Seen here is the park's entrance structure, with the clock tower stripped of it's clocks. Apparently they are being used at another park.

Here's a link to the article and photo gallery. It really looks as though after Cedar Fair realized they couldn't get a good price for the land most work at the park stopped.

Six Flags Great Adventure 2009

Six Flags Great Adventure has announced that for the 2009 season their Medusa roller coaster (B&M Floorless coaster, circa 1999) will be receiving a 'transformation.'

"The Medusa redesign will deliver a multi-sensory ride experience with all-new thematics and innovative, state-of-the-art visual, audio and sensory effects launching it into another dimension of thrills and excitement."

The press release also mentions that the transformation will include fire, fog, water, and on-board audio. This treatment is similar to what X received at Six Flags Magic Mountain this year, and what Superman will receive at Six Flags New England next year.

Part of the release really caught my eye though: "Guests can take advantage of the last chance to experience Medusa's original Greek mythology theme during the remaining days of Fright Fest. Compelling details of Medusa's multi-dimensional ride transformation will be revealed as Spring 2009 draws near. "

What Greek mythology theme is there to experience now? There's the very, very loose 'mine' story going on, but not much else. I'm highly anticipating the "compelling details" that are still to come!

Scott And Carol Present: Indiana Beach's Monster Beach Party

Indiana Beach looked very different this fall. Instead of shuttering the rides and resting up for the season, they hosted the Monster Beach Party. For the first time in memory the park was open to the public after Labor Day. Some monsters appeared on the boardwalk and a few new decorations were set along the midways.

The park’s trees had turned colors and it was strange to see some falling leaves blowing around the guest’s feet as they walked from ride to ride. Wearing sweatshirts at the beginning of the day rather than after dark, a few attendees braved the chill by wearing shorts, but swimwear was nonexistent.

Cobwebs fluttered in the breeze to the rustle of cornstalks. The rides that could coexist with cooler temperatures were open and the crowds evidently stayed home to watch football. Almost every coaster was a walk-on, and even some rerides in the front seat were available.

A nice cemetery scene with a “Gravekeeper” who rises to greet you if you get too close. The headstones are adorned with the management team, following the lead of other parks in the past.

The Wabash Cannonball has some extra surprises as the day goes longer. Pay special attention to the coffin in the south miniature golf course. Beware of the cutting crew, they want to use their chainsaws to cut you down to size. They roam the rail bed next to the lake.

It was a beautiful brisk day with the wind coming of the lake. Taking a ride on the Shaffer Queen revealed a nice panorama of the turning colors of fall that ringed the shoreline. Summer is over, and this was one last blast at Indiana Beach before winters closure. While it is sad to see another summer gone, seeing a different view of Indiana Beach made it easier to face the upcoming snow.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Terminator's Official Announcement

Here is the official media release for Six Flags Magic Mountain's new GCI wooden coaster for 2009, Terminator: The Coaster.

And there is a great animation of the ride as well. The first drop is pretty weird-in-a-good-way looking, and the ride is certainly unique to Six Flags Magic Mountain.

CornStalkers: The Haunt at Dorney Park

"The fields are long gone, but the souls of the farmhands and scarecrows stayed. With no land to roam, no crows to scare, the ghosts of Solomon's farm have returned to reclaim their fields."

Terminator The Ride

It must be movie tie-in day in the amusement park world! The Funland Blog is reporting some details of Six Flags Magic Mountain's new 2009 wooden coaster, Terminator The Ride.

The Great Coasters International, 100 ft. tall, 2,850 ft. long ride will hit speeds of 55 mph during it's run, and is set to be announced this week according to Funland. The ride will also have what looks like a S-curve first drop, like Renegade at Valleyfair!'s, a station fly-through, and on board audio.

Seems all the rumors were true on this one, with the theme (Terminator) and the location of the ride being in the same spot as the park's former wooden coaster Psyclone.

Jump over to the Funland Blog for the exclusive concept art.

More Than Meets The Eye

Universal Parks & Resorts has announced that they are working with Hasbro and DreamWorks Studios to create Transformers rides at Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Hollywood.

The press release for the attractions is brief as to what type of ride this will be, saying that "The attraction will fuse 3D-HD media, mega special effects and stunning robotics with a ride system that will transform perceptions of theme park experiences."

If you click on the two pieces of concept art I posted here you can see in the much bigger versions that riders are in a vehicle that somewhat resembles the ride system for the Spiderman rides. That's an educated guess on my part, though - no one has officially said what the ride system will be yet.

The release says that Transformers will open at both parks in 2011 - but actually later in the same release says that Universal Studios Singapore's version will open in late 2010. The next Transformers movie is slated to his theaters in late June of 2009.

The new ride will replace the Backdraft attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood.

New Diamondback Photos

KIExtreme has new Diamondback photos taken at Kings Island this past weekend.

The park worked on the lift hill quite a bit last week, and you can really tell from the pics. The massive lift and first drop supports are towering over the park, just waiting to be topped off.

Supports have also started to go up in the area of the ride's turnaround.

Club Blood @ Dorney Park Video

Dorney Park was kind enough to invite me to film some of the mazes at The Haunt for use on NewsPlusNotes - for that I thank the park!

This is the first video I got together: Club Blood. Take a trip through Club Blood - the only nightclub in town where you're welcome to stay forever! The vampires running the club would love to show you a bloody good time!

Remember to subscribe to NewsPlusNotes' YouTube channel to know when the latest videos are published!

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Wild World 1987

Greetings, fellow enthusiasts! I am not your usual "consort" but the namesake of this series, and it shall be my honor and privilege to escort you through the hallowed halls of my brochure collection from this point forward. Please feel free to e-mail me anytime with questions or feedback. But without further ado, let's proceed to the good stuff!

This week we travel back to 1987 to visit a quaint little park known as Wild World. You may know it better as the modern-day Six Flags America in Largo, Maryland. Featured on the cover alongside other staple attractions is the park's venerable elder statesman, the Wild One wooden roller coaster.

Back in '87, Wild One had been operating at Wild World for only one year after being relocated from Paragon Park in Massachusetts. It stood as the lone signature ride in a park that was still primarily focused on water attractions and entertainment, as evidenced by the content of this particular brochure. The year 1987 saw the opening of yet another water attraction, Paradise Island, which afforded guests the opportunity to challenge "monkey rings", "cannon flumes", and other obstacle course-style wet activities.

"New" and "improved" seem to be prevailing themes of this brochure, which indicates that the park was experiencing a period of notable growth and expansion during this time.

Corporate sponsorship was obviously alive and well at this park, even back in the eighties! The wave pool known as "Wild Wave" was actually explicitly sponsored by Continental Express. But I guess we can't complain too much, since it's likely that those sponsorships were partially responsible for that jaw-droppingly low gate price of $11.95. Oh, the good old days...

I hope you've enjoyed this week's trip down memory lane. There's a lot more where that came from, and I'm looking forward to sharing the journey with you!

More Hollywood Horror Nights Photos

© 2008 Theme Park Village

Theme Park Village had the chance to check out this year's Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood and has posted a photo report of their event.

The photos contain many of the different characters that can be see wondering around the park. Some of those costumes are pretty wild!

Click over here to head to TPV to see the report.

New Site: Coaster Portal

The author of the popular Coster Critic's Blog has launched a new website: Coaster Portal.

What is it? Well I'll let the author summarize that:

"I wanted to create a different type of theme park web site. One that linked to all of the best sites on the web and not just the sites that were in a particular network or affiliate group. But I also wanted the site to be more than just a link directory. My goal is to offer visitors a truly unique resource. CP’s web site profiles will allow visitors to learn about and get direct access to the features that a site offers. Visitors are invited to rate the sites, leave their own review, or give their own feedback."

It's a really great resource, I highly suggest checking it out!

Prowler is Vertical!

Prowler at Worlds of Fun has gone vertical! The park has posted the latest photos from the construction of the ride, and as seen above, they've started placing bents for the new wooden coaster for its turnaround.

Here's a link to the park's gallery of construction photos. I'm still very excited for this ride!

Busch Gardens Europe's Howl-O-Scream Pics

Coaster101 recently visited Busch Gardens Europe's Howl-O-Scream event and published many photos from their trip.

Busch Gardens does a really great job of decorating the property for their Halloween event.

You can check out Coaster101's photos here.

Manta Update

Johnny Upsidedown has new Manta construction photos that show off the massive lift support that Sea World Orlando put up this week.

It appears as though it's the tallest support that they put up first. This year's B&Ms are being built out of order which is pretty unusual, really.

You can get a great idea of just how the ride will tower over that section of the park from the photos. The park also has been making great progress on the aquarium aspect of the ride also.

New Life for Star Trek Experience?

The Las Vegas Review Journal has published an article stating that talks are well underway to bring Star Trek The Experience to a new home in downtown Vegas.

The Mayor of Las Vegas let it slip that the developer of Neonopolis, a mall on Freemont street in downtown, is close to closing a deal with CBS to bring the attraction to their struggling shopping center.

I've been skipping the downtown part of Veags on my last few trips, perhaps this is a reason to head back down there one day? I honestly had no idea at Neonopolis existed, but if they can move the Star Trek attractions, and even better perhaps add a new one, this could be a great idea.

Blue Sky Cellar Photos

MiceAge has a ton of photos taken at California Adventure's media day for the new Blue Sky Cellar preview center.

The new 'attraction' of sorts is packed to the gills with models, concept art, and more - all of which is previewing the changes coming to the park in the next five or so years.

There is a full model of the Paradise Pier section of the park which confirms that the Maliboomer S&S space shot attraction will be removed from the park in the future. That's just the tip of the iceberg of information now available about the park's changes, though. If the final result is anything like the art and models that can be seen, this park has a very bright future.

Valleyfair! 2009: Breakers Bay

Valleyfair! has put out a press release about their new for 2009 water park addition, Breakers Bay.

The 350,000 gallon wave pool will replace the park's Log Flume, which is already long gone at this point. As with other newer Cedar Fair wave pool additions, private cabanas will be available to rent at the pool area.

The new addition also includes new locker rooms, tube rentals, merchandise, and food locations.

To top off this watery announcement, the water park at Valleyfair! will now be known as Soak City. It was formerly Whitewater Country.

Wave pools are super popular at water parks, so this is a great foundation piece for the continued growth of the park.

Daily Spin 10.15.2008

Cedar Point's official blog has started to tease about a large shipment of wood that the park recently received. Nothing is official yet, but I wouldn't look for a new coaster at the Point next year. Modifications to a current one is more likely it seems.

Carowinds has put up some additional photos of the construction of the Carolina Cobra on their website for the ride. The new photos show the track for the ride being primed in white, and one piece has some of the new coral color on it.

There are new photos of the concept art that is now hanging outside the Blue Sky Cellar at Disney's California Adventure. The preview center for the park's $1.1 billion renovation is scheduled to open early next week. One piece of art that has been posted is a new map of the park circa 2012 or so, it's really awesome.

The T-Rex Cafe at Downtown Disney in Florida at the Walt Disney World Resort has opened to diners. The Orlando Sentinel's Theme Park Rangers blog has posted some details and a nice photo review of the restaurant. The theming is very detailed and the place looks like a great fit for the Downtown Disney.

This article is in Swedish, but it has a cool photo and announces that Grona Land will add an Intamin ZacSpin for the 2009 season. This will be the third ride of its type in the world. You can see the first two here and then here. This new ride for Grona Land looks larger than the first two, which is also worth noting.

Still not a peep out of Six Flags Magic Mountain about their planned attraction for the 2009 season, but Theme Park Review posted a great update of construction going on at the work site. They are clearing out the land to be poured with concrete as GCI likes to do. Hopefully we'll hear official word on this one soon!

New KI Diamondback Photos

Here are some recent construction photos of Diamondback at Kings Island, courtesy of the park.

Kings Island’s new Diamondback roller coaster rising from its den

© 2008 Kings Island

"Construction continues on the new Diamondback roller coaster at Kings Island. The $22 million steel roller coaster will change the landscape for thrill seekers when the ride opens in April 2009.

© 2008 Kings Island

Diamondback will be the tallest, fastest and meanest roller coaster at Kings Island. The ride will stand 230 feet at its highest point with a first drop of 215 feet at a 74 degree angle and snake its way around 5,282 feet of track in excess of 80 miles per hour."

The ride is looking really great! Many thanks to Kings Island for the photos.

Darien Lake's 2008 Fright Fest

One of our readers, Rousea, was nice enough to send a link to this photo tour of Darien Lake's 2008 Fright Fest.

The event looks super popular as the park looks packed in many of the photos. The "field trip" they offer looks pretty wild, too! That's a neat idea for a haunt attraction.

GCI's Forellenhof New Wooden Coaster

© 2008 GCI Intern Website

The GCI Intern Website recently published some great photos of the construction of the new wooden coaster going in at Forellenhof Park (Freizeitpark Plohn) in Germany.

The medium sized coaster features 90 feet of elevation changes, a 70 ft. first drop, 2,379 ft of track, and will wind around and through the park's existing themed log flume. It looks like a really interesting and unique coaster.

This ride was also announced on Theme Park Review as a game of sorts, which was rather fun to read when it took place. That thread now has the layout of the ride and some stats you can check out.

Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Six Flags Over Texas 1999

This week Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight features the Six Flags Over Texas 1999 brochure.

1999 saw the addition of the very popular Batman The Ride coaster to the park. The B&M Inverted ride may be a clone, but it's an awesome one!

This Batman was the last one to be placed into a Six Flags park. (New, at least. Six Flags New Orleans' was used)

The park's 3-D motion theater was showing Escape From Dino Island in 1999 as well.

Six Flags over Texas is high on my list of Six Flags parks I want to visit or revisit. Such a wide variety of rides and attractions. The park doesn't skew toward big rides or just family stuff, it's a great blend of both.

That said they do have some great coasters, though! Again a lot of variety can be found here as well, from the somewhat tame indoor ride Runaway Mountain, to the towering Titan.

Texan parks put an emphasis on their live entertainment, I've noticed. Six Flags Over Texas is no different in that respect.

Thanks to Sabrina for another great brochure this week!

Thorpe Park 2009 - Saw: The Ride

Thorpe Park has announced that the name and theme of their new coaster for 2009 is Saw: The Ride.

The coaster was previously rumored to be themed to a horror movie, and now the park has released all the details through this super detailed website that you should check out.

The ride starts indoors in a dark section themed to the movie. The outdoor ride portion features a 100 ft. drop at 100 degrees, the steepest drop in the world at 10 degrees past vertical. (Why they do not count Steel Hawg's 120 degrees I do not know) There are also 3 inversions to encounter.

The park also launched a blog that features the ride's press release, photos, and more. From there I learned that the ride's track is actually complete.

Saw: The Ride is scheduled to debut in Spring of 2009.

Two Coaster Updates

Worlds of Fun has been doing a great job of updating their construction photos of Prowler, the park's new wooden coaster for 2009.

They park has been blazing along with pouring footers for the ride, a stretch of the ride's return run can be seen in the photos above. Amazing looking, in my opinion.

Here's that gallery.

Carowinds has also been updating their construction photos of the the park's new coaster for 2009, Carolina Cobra.

They've totally cleared out the Super Saturator at this point, leveled the land, and now have begun to pour footers for the new Boomerang coaster.

You can see those photos here.

Dueling Dragons Lost Their Dragons

This past week the iconic red and blue (fire and ice) dragon statues at the entrance to Dueling Dragons at Islands of Adventure were removed.

As we well know half of the Lost Continent section of the park is being removed for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, due to open in early 2010. The coasters are still open, but a temporary entrance has been created from the Jurassic Park side of the area.

OrlandoRocks has a great photo gallery of recent pictures of the work going on at Islands of Adventure.

The Harry Potter project will be awesome, no doubt, but I've already made it clear how I feel about the loss of half of the Lost Continent.

Dollywood Unannounces Adventure Mountain

In a surprising move, Dollywood theme park has announced that they will no longer be adding the previously announced Adventure Mountain for the 2009 season.

Citing the economic downturn and the rising cost and availability of basic building materials, the park has decided to push back the attraction to 2010. The park will instead focus on previously announced new entertainment offerings for the 2009 season.

Could this be the first of many delayed additions at U.S. parks due to the economy? Is there more to the story that we don't know? I haven't a clue, but I'm nervously awaiting more announcements like these, I fear.

General Jack's Sideshow Bizarro

As described by Dorney Park:

Come one, come any, come all! See scenes of the absurd, amazing and odd at the greatest sideshow on Earth. Meet Spike the sharp objects fanatic, Octane the pyromaniac, Heidi the fiery dancing damsel and Gretchen the Grinder Girl.

Don't get me wrong, the Haunts at Dorney Park are great this year, but so is the live entertainment!

Valleyfair! 2009 Update

© 2008 Valleyfair Zone

Wow, almost hard to believe there was a Log Flume in that enormous hole in the ground just a few weeks ago, eh?

Valleyfair Zone has some new photo updates and a semi-official announcement about the park's plans for the 2009 season located here. Interestingly, that information is saying that the park's water park will be called Soak City starting in 2009.

I'm sure we all can agree that a wave pool was rather overdue at the park, so this is a fantastic expansion if you ask me.

Sea World Australia's New Coaster

Sea World Australia, located on the Gold Coast (see insanely beautiful photo above), is currently working on a new coaster that is scheduled to open during their summer 2008 season.

Theme Park Photography has some very nice photos of the ride under construction. It's launched and is full of low to the ground quick turns. Called Jet Rescue, it appears as though this just may be the world's 2nd Aquatrax ride from Intamin. The trains for the ride are themed to jet skis. Cool!

It looks like fun, whatever it is.

Universal Hollywood's Horror Nights

© 2008 Westcoaster.net

I hadn't seen any reviews of Universal Studios Hollywood's Halloween Horror Nights yet, so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw that Westcoaster just published a great photo review of the event!

I do not think it's fair to draw any comparisons to this event's sister in Orlando, as Hollywood's event is still young in it's 'rebirth.' That said, the event does look very nice this year. I really like how they've expanded upon the tram tour. I think it's so cool to walk the sets from War of the Worlds, especially as a haunt!

Scott + Carol Present: Kennywood's Phantom Fright Nights 2008

Editor's Note: Scott and Carol Holmes are back with a wonderful review of Kennywood's Phantom Fright Nights 2008. The event looks great this year! Read on to see what I mean...
~~~~~~~~~~
Kennywood has been thrilling patrons for 110 years. Located in the Pittsburgh metro area, the locals have become very discerning about what they like, and very vocal about what they don’t. So being successful for so long, the park has to be doing something right. As a National Historical Landmark, they have high standards to maintain. It has remained in the same two families for three generations, until being sold to Parques Renuidos earlier this year. But the mission remains the same, to provide thrills in the way they always have through the years. For the seventh year, Phantom Fright Nights combines “terror with taste,” in the inimitable Kennywood tradition. The Phantom greets you outside the gate, to welcome you to his Kennywood. Artfully staged, he presents a foreboding invite to the mayhem of the dark.
The planning starts in February, but construction ramps up when daily operations ceased for the season. The big new haunted attraction for 2008, Voodoo Bayou, is the brain child of Matt Eames. As the creative director, he says, “I’m living my dream – taking the bizarre ideas that gush from my head and coaxing them to life.”
Phantom Fright Nights is a big undertaking, and it requires a temporary expansion of the “scare force.” Three hundred monsters of all types are hired, trained, and prepared for duty. According to Jeff Filicko, “We have a priority system for makeup, where the more detailed characters move forward in the line. It’s always a rush, but our dedicated team makes it all come together.” Many of them appear in the bayou, whispering warnings that are unheeded, echoing throughout the shrunken heads.
For long time park regulars, the giant spider from the retired Gold Rusher makes an appearance. A long complicated experience filled with skulls, snakes, and rotting carcasses, some with inside jokes. One of the dead is met their untimely demise wearing a Kennywood shirt. If you dare, try to avoid becoming another shrunken head.
Kennywood’s new for 2008 is Ghostwood Estate, an interactive dark ride that changes every time guests ride it. Featuring spectacular three dimensional theming, guests challenge each other to drive away the ghosts that have taken over the place.
For those who would rather sit back and watch the scenes, there are digital displays disguised as pictures that constantly change, props that move when particular targets are hit, and a track-less vehicle that starts, stops and turns with no visible means of control. For others who want to fire away, there are around 200 targets, most of which reward your marksmanship with a trick as well as points. Whether you play the game or just enjoy the scenery, it’s always a good time. One last warning, be very observant near the giant cake. Make sure you hit that target.
Changing the mood of the park takes many man hours. Every light bulb is changed on the carousel, a job that takes two maintenance workers at entire week. Almost every other light in the park is also changed in some form or another. According to the park, that’s 10,479 different bulbs. Fifty strobe lights are added, along with between two and three thousand square feet of colored gels, for adding just the right touch of atmosphere.
But the scares are different here at Kennywood. They use surprise and loud noises, instead of merely gore. A wonderful change from having people just yell in your face, Phantom Fright Night participants find themselves misdirected into looking away, and then seeing the frightening apparitions right next to them.
If you brave the Villa of the Vampire, you are offered a “bite”, and directed past a coffin “just for you.” Enough coffins to fill a mortician’s warehouse, and more bats and werewolves than you have silver bullets. Beware of what lurks in the fog, it’s really you they’re after. As you enter the Dark Shadows Maze, is the wall really closing in? With all the fog, minimal lighting, and a deep subsonic pulsing beat, until they touch you you’ll never know. You fell like something bad is about to happen, but will it?
Parkside Café has been transformed into Mortem Manor. What was once beautiful has now become macabre? The unearthly zombies make you wish this is one pageant you passed by. With lots of places to move through the walls and approach you from unforeseen directions, the screams of the guests provide all the sound track this maze needs.
If you like 3-d chromatography, don’t miss Captain Skully’s Curse. With pirates waiting around every corner, the black lit backdrops hide many things, and they are all waiting for you. Don’t try to take their treasure; they’ll take you prisoner instead. Pretty wenches beware; a pirate wants to be your best friend.
The roller coasters are open, as well as most of the big rides. Many rides are on standby, available for quick use when larger crowds gather. If you wander the park enjoying the darkness, you see some of the scenes the creative team has set up for your enjoyment.
The Kennyville Cemetery with the glowing fountain and ghostly apparition show the park in a different light. Walking through Gory Park, the realization that no one is picking up trash in that area strikes a disquieting chord. The park is not usually like this.
As you leave, grabbing a bite at Potato Patch Fries on the way out, the fond memories of the best scares fill your head. The members of your group have varying opinions about what was best, and that’s alright; Kennywood means many different things to many different people. The best memories are your own experiences of your visit, and they should provide pleasant recollections throughout the cold winter.
Waldameer 2009: Disk'O
Waldameer Amusement Park has announced a new attraction for the park's 2009 season, and is already talking about plans for 2010.
The park will add a Mega Disk'O flat ride from Zamperla next season. The Ravine Flyer II wooden coaster, which opened this past summer, was a smash success for the park. The park estimates that business was up some 20% this year due to the new coaster.
If this trend continues, the park already plans to add a Flying Carousel ride for 2010. I think it's fantastic to hear of a local, independent park doing so well!
Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight: Knoebels 1989
This week Sabrina's Brochure Spotlight takes us back to Knoebels Amusement Resort in the year 1989. Let's dig in!
Fun fact: I attended college about 20 minutes from Knoebels! I literally used to go there with friends just for the food on some days!
Knoebels really is a gem in the amusement park industry. And Phoenix is really a gem in the world of classic wooden roller coasters.
Like I said, I love the food at Knoebels. A lot.
The park's Haunted Mansion is fantastic as well, but I'm sure I don't need to tell you that. After all the rides I've been on few are still able to really make me jump like Knoebels' Haunted Mansion.
It looks like Knoebel's new attraction for 1989 was their antique cars.
Knoebels really does have a great, wide variety of rides and attractions that suit the whole family. Now if they could just get that darn Flying Turns open...
Many thanks again to Sabrina!
Lookin' Real Good: Diamondback
© Paul Bonifield 2008 / KIExtreme
KIExtreme has some new construction photos of Diamondback at Kings Island posted that were taken this past weekend.
They have a lot more track up and the ride is looking great! They also put up the first segment of the lift hill, hopefully that's what they will work on this week. I can't wait to see the ride tower over the park.
Check out the gallery here.
Dorney Park Requesting Zoning Changes
Looks like Dorney Park is trying to rearrange the zoning of the amusement park in order to bypass their regular series of ride approvals.
This article gives the details, but this isn't the first time the park has attempted to do this. Previous attempts were shot down by the commissioners. The current attempt would keep a buffer around the park, then there would be a section that has a limit of 30 ft., then a center strip would be for taller rides.
The park cites the fact that they have to reveal their plans so early as a reason for wanting the change.
This is somewhat similar to what Six Flags New England has going on right now as well.
My Dorney Park Haunt Video
This is my first attempt, really, at editing a video and trying to make it smooth and look nice. I literally learned how to use the program I have for video editing while I made this, but it came out decent me thinks.
Anyway, it's a smash up of clips I took while at the park. Some attractions, atmosphere, sliders, etc.
I also have to say that The Haunt in it's 2nd weekend was much improved! Lots of kinks worked out.
Sesame Place 2009: Count's Splash Castle
Sesame Place, located in Langhorne, PA, has announced the largest new attraction in the theme park's history for the 2009 season: Count's Splash Castle.
© 2008 Sesame Place, used with permission
As described by the park, "The Count’s Splash Castle will be a multi-level interactive waterplay attraction that will stimulate imagination and provide exciting hands-on entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. The attraction will span over 38,000 square feet and feature over 90 play elements including a 1,000 gallon eight-foot tipping bucket, multiple water slides, valves, levers, water curtains, bridges, hydro blasters, bubbler jets, bongos, hose jets, water wheels and much more."
These interactive family water play structures are always a big hit at parks. They are great for the whole family, and provide parks with a nice high capacity attraction. No doubt that Count's Splash Castle will do the same for Sesame Place.
Robert J. Caruso, executive vice president and general manager of Sesame Place, said that “The Count’s Splash Castle is the biggest attraction in the history of Sesame Place, and we are very proud to add it to our line-up of family-fun experiences at the park.”
Count's Splash Castle, manufactured by SCS Interactive, will be located in the southern part of the park replacing The Count's Fount and Little Bird's Birdbath.
I'm very happy to see Sesame Place adding new attractions in back to back years. This past summer saw the addition of the themed Sunny Day Carousel. After adding 'dry' attractions such at Elmo's World and the Carousel, it's also great to see the park expanding their water park attractions once again.
Viral Muppet Videos
Ever since I read that Disney has been posting new, viral Muppet videos on YouTube as part of their marketing campaign to get the characters back in the public eye I've wanted to check them out. But I kept forgetting.
I finally remembered! The videos, like above, are pretty great. Sam the Eagle was always really strange to me as a kid, he seemed overly strict but you can't fault being patriotic!
Here's one of Gonzo, The Swedish Chef, Beaker, and the ever charming Statler and Waldorf. The Swedish Chef's video is pretty great.
I do hope that one day when they fully revive the brand (this is one I wouldn't mind seeing them "Disney Princess-ify" that more Disney Park attractions can be created!
Two Wonderful Reader Contributions
First, we have some great photos taken inside the now defunct MGM Grand Adventures Theme Park in Las Vegas. Reader Ashley was kind enough to dig up these old photos and scan them for us to see.
Frankly, it's hard to find any photos taken inside MGM Grand Adventures, so I'm most grateful to Ashley for her contribution!
^ That was just inside the park's entrance, a forced perspective photo op. I have a photo like this of my parents!
I honestly don't remember seeing this paddle wheel boat when I was at the park!
The park had a nice atmosphere even if some of the 'themed areas' consisted of no more than a food place an another facade or so.
I have to again say thanks to Ashley. Great photos!
Second we have a video that reader Steve took of the defunct Santa's Village theme park that was located in East Dundee, IL.
The park closed in 2005 and most of it was auctioned off in late 2006. It's very sad to see a park in the shape of Santa's Village in the above video.
You can also see an interesting aerial of the abandoned park on Live Local:
This link should get you to the above images.
Thanks Steve!
Six Flags' Bad News
Six Flags has put out a press release addressing the fact that they are not in line with the New York Stock Exchanges' standard of a common stock that is being traded having a 30 day closing average price of above one dollar.
In a nutshell, the stock is now really really a junk one, and the stock exchange has rules that say the company has 6 months to fix the problem... or go away.
This doesn't effect the company's ability to operate, but it's never a good sign if a company is removed from a stock exchange.
CEO Mark Shapiro said the company is looking at several possible ways of fixing the problem, one of which being a reverse stock split. If they do a one-for-two reverse split that still only puts the price at $1.30 (from yesterday's price).
I'm not saying that the parks are in danger necessarily, but Six Flags as a company in it's current form doesn't look so hot right now. The parks are still viable and the right person could make money on them, so if all else fails someone will swoop in and buy them.
Daily Spin 10.2.08
California's Great America has started a new blog called "Inside Track," the first entry of which features some preview photos of their new Haunt event. The Park's Haunt starts tomorrow and features 13 halloween themed attractions.
Work has continued on Sea World Florida's new B&M Flyer, Manta. Orlando Rocks has new photos that show that the station track is now in place. I wouldn't be surprised if the station building is the next item to go up.
Alton Towers theme park, in the United Kingdom, has announced that their Corkscrew roller coaster will be removed this fall. The Vekoma coaster has been inverting riders since 1980. The park has a special section of their website devoted to the soon to be gone ride.
While across the pond we can check in with Europa Park and find that the first element of the park's mysterious new coaster for 2009 is complete, as seen in photos on this message board. What a unique looking overbank hill! Can't wait for more about this ride to be announced...
Southern Star Amusements, the company that was looking to reopen Six Flags New Orleans, has given up on the project according to both the company and Six Flags. No real details are being revealed about what went wrong, but a lot of speculation about the legitimacy of the plans has always existed.
Here is an article about Six Flags New England's Fright Fest event, and other fall activities taking place at the park. Be warned though, you'll have to pay an extra $15 on top of admission to the park if you want to go in the *2* haunted houses.
September Poll Results
In the month of September I wanted to know what ride you guys were looking forward to most for 2009. Now not all rides have been announced, and one on my list may not happen, but it was fun nonetheless. Here's the results.
Diamondback at Kings Island took the poll with little trouble. The impressive looking hyper coaster is sure to be a hit - and the fact that it's already under construction doesn't hurt its popularity.
Manta at Sea World Florida placed 2nd. The themed B&M Flying Coaster should be very popular at its new home, and has received a lot of interested since its announcement. The fact that it's layout remains a mystery doesn't hurt, either.
Prowler at Worlds of Fun came in 3rd, and like I said yesterday I think this one has the potential to be the sleeper hit of '09.
Rockit at Universal Studios Florida ranked 4th, and the two unannounced GCI wooden coasters rounded out the poll. With California's Great America's ride in serious jeopardy at this point, it's not a surprise that it only received 4 votes.
The new poll is up!
Hong Kong Disneyland's Halloween
Hong Kong Disneyland has started it's Halloween celebration for 2008. Seen above is the park's entrance gate, with an enormous Jack Skellington atop them. How cool!
There's a lot of great photos in this thread over at MiceChat of the park's Halloween Festivities, including the new Demon Jungle haunted maze.
Check it out!
New WoF Prowler Photos
Worlds of Fun has updated their official construction photos of their new wooden coaster for the 2009 season, Prowler.
The park is waisting no time in starting work on this thriller, as they've already started on the footers for the ride. There's photos of this work, as well as more great shots of the wooded path the ride will travel through on the park's website.
It is my opinion that this could be a sleeper hit of 2009.
